THORN IN OUR SIDE
This was only the second time this season that the under 17s had played together and they looked every inch the team to beat
Early exchanges where even with Clevedon electing to play up the slope to try and tire out the much larger Thornbury forwards. This was working well with Clevedon piling on the pressure in the scrums with Bryant and Crichton both excelling against the much larger opposition and line outs with Symes and Hicks leaping like salmons, but in broken play Thornbury where quicker to react and ran in two unanswered tries.
Clevedon's reply was swift with the trusty left boot of Tom Francis slotting over a penalty. Thornbury soon scored again, but the Clevedon boys reacted with a fine try from hooker Matthew Bailey who rumbled over. With the score poised at 19 - 10 the second half down the slope looked to be Clevedons to win.
Thornbury had other ideas and kicked an early penalty and then scored a try. Clevedon looked shell shocked, but started to string some phases together with good inter passing and a well worked scrum saw winger Matthew Proto ghost over in the corner only for the ref to disallow it for a forward pass. Clevedon looked dejected at the decision, but never gave up resulting in Joe Tucker piling through for a try converted by Francis.
Thornbury hit back with another try and penalty to take the game. Clevedon had a man of the match performance from George Thorne whose constant 'in your face' play was a positive feature of the game.
This was a great game by two good sides played with spirit and enjoyment from both sets of players.
