St. Ives 20 Clevedon 19 20th April 2010
Team: M.Lowis, B.Hazeldine, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, J.Barzotelli, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, O.Biggins, H.Russell, D.Rawle. Replacements: M.Honour, G.Carpenter, K.Vickery.

On a fine sunny afternoon and a dry pitch both sides played good running rugby. Clevedon started well and dominated the early exchanges and it was not long before Clevedon took the lead through a fine individual try by Tom Thie, which was converted by Ben Hazeldine. The Clevedon forwards were on top especially in the linesout where Harvey Russell and Ben Chase were outstanding. Unfortunately Clevedon lost the services of Chase and this disrupted the pack. Clevedon increased their lead with a try from Mike lowis. Clevedon were so much in the driving seat that they should have scored more tries, but only managed one more when good approach work by Lowis put Dave Rawle in for a try, which Hazeldine converted. Clevedon should have doubled their score but became too casual and sloppy passing gifted St.Ives an interception try right on half time.
St.Ives came out with all guns blazing for the second period and hit Clevedon hard and before Clevedon knew where they were St.Ives had scored two tries by taking the Clevedon pack apart. There were some baffling decisions by the referee and both sides had two players yellow carded. Clevedon having relaxed regrouped and were brought down close to the hosts line and every time conceded a penalty much to their amazement. With ten minutes to go St.Ives took the lead with a try from a catch and drive at the lineout. Back came Clevedon and Biggins and Barzotelli were pulled down short of the line. The final whistle went with Clevedon still on the attack, but this was one that Clevedon let slip away.
That concludes Clevedon's league season who are currently fifth in the league and relying on Avonmouth to keep it that wy next week.

Clevedon 15 Avonmouth 13 3rd April 2010
Team: B.Hazeldine, J.Barzotelli, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, R.Smith, D.Williams, B.Stone, D.Rawle, B.Chase, O.Biggins, N.Hudson, H.Russell. Replacements: M.Honour, G.Carpenter, A.Ayres.

It was due to the forkers and bucketeers that enabled this game to be played. Their efforts were rewarded with a win and a good performance in atrocious conditions. The referee did well to distinguish between the sides despite both teams changing shirts at half time.
Avonmouth applied the early pressure and deservedly took the lead with a try after a slick handling movement. Clevedon gradually settled down and got into the game. They spilled the ball twice on the visitors try line before Ben Hazeldine kicked a penalty to get Clevedon on the scoreboard. Despite the conditions both sides ran the ball, and as a result Avonmouth scored their second try. The set peices were even with Clevedon having the slight edge in the scrums with the diminutive Ben Stone the corner stone of the pack. A fine attacking movement by Clevedon saw debutant James Barzotelli have a great run on the wing and provide the try scoring pass to man of the match Ryan Smith. Hazeldine converted. Before half time Avonmouth regained the lead with a penalty.

The second half started with the pitch being just a mass of brown. In the heavy conditions both sides, with weary legs, kicked away possession. When ball was kept in hand the tackling on both sides was immense. The Clevedon midfield of Simon Johns and Tom O'rourke defended out of their skins while the forwards, well lead by Owen Biggins, played out of their skins. Harvey Russell in the lineout was like a leaping salmon. A delicate chip ahead saw Chris Cates win the race for the touch down to put Clevedon into the lead. The battle was now on.
Clevedon were down to 14 men with a player in the bin. Avonmouth applied tremendous pressure on the Clevedon line, but a monumental effort by the Clevedon team held them out. Clevedon managed to survive and at the final whistle were entrenched in the Avonmouth half. A classic game and a credit to both sides and to the referee, Adrian Noble
Next week, Clevedon's last league game is away to St.Ives. Coach leaves very early on Saturday for a weekender and the kick off is at 15:00.

Clevedon 42 Sidmouth 13 27th March 2010
Team: M.Lowis, B.Hazeldine, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, S.Johnson, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: M.Honour, H.Russell, J.Barzotelli.

On a heavy pitch the crowd were entertained to a feast of open rugby. Clevedon took an early lead by spreading the ball wide for Mike Lowis to score a try in the corner. Sidmouth hit back with a dropped goal and a penalty to lead 6-3 against the run of play. Clevedon again seemed to concede too many penalties at the break down. Another sweeping move ended with Lowis scoring his second try in the corner. Steve Johnson kicked a penalty for Clevedon to lead 13-6 at the break.

Clevedon's dominence in the scrums was continued into the second half and provided a platform for scrum half Joe Williams to set up numerous attacks. Clevedon soon increased their lead when a swift handling movement saw wing Ben Hazeldine score in the corner. A delicate kick ahead saw Harvey Russell swoop on to the ball to score with Johnson adding the conversion. Sidmouth sadly had to play second fiddle. Clevedon's handling and timely off loads saw Ben Chase go over in the corner. This was quickly followed by a fine individual try by acting captain Tom Thie Johnson converted. Clevedon destroyed the Sidmouth scrum near their line and scrum half Joe Williams poached the ball to swallow dive over for a try.
Sidmouth never gave up and were rewarded with a converted try in injury time.
Next week, Clevedon are at home to Avonmouth in the league. Kick off is at 15:00.

Paignton 11 Clevedon 3 20th March 2010
Team: B.Hazeldine, S.Johnson, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, N.George, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: J.Russell, J.Williams, J.Barzotelli.

On a wet heavy pitch, both sides played running rugby, and the handling skills could not be better. Clevedon started well and should have taken the lead, but stout defence kept them at bay. Clevedon did take the lead through a penalty by Steve Johnson. Paignton looked dangerous with ball in hand, but Clevedon's tackling was equal to it. Clevedon had a player yellow carded. During this period Paignton equalised with a penalty. The half time score was 3-3.
Clevedon started the second on the offensive and spent a period on the hosts line but failed to turn pressure into points. Clevedon then had another player yellow carded which did not help their cause. In these conditions Clevedon greatly missed Mike Lowis and Harvey Russell. Paignton kicked a second penalty, and when Clevedon had another player in the bin, Paignton scored a try against a six man pack. A good hard game, a draw would have been a fair result.
Next week, Clevedon are at home to Sidmouth in the league. Kick off is at 14:30.

Clevedon 13 Newton Abbot 21 13th March 2010
Team: M.Lowis, S.Johnson, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, N.George, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, M.Honour, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, H.Russell, D.Rawle. Replacements: K.Vickery, G.Cherrington, D.Williams.

Clevedon playing against play off candidates were with out captain John Potts and the influential Owen Biggins. Newton started the brightest and took an early lead with a try in the corner. Clevedon soon hit back when winger Steve Johnson intercepted to run in a try, which he in turn converted. Clevedon seemed to concede penalties at a regular rate for reasons only known by the referee. Newton then charged down a kick to score their second try. Before the interval Johnson kicked a penalty to bring the scores level at half time.
The second half started with both sides intent on running the ball. Both sides made mistakes with their handling. The Clevedon lineout was inconsistent. Harvey Russell at number 7 was outstanding. Newton increased their lead with two penalties. Johnson replying with one. Going into the last quarter it was anybodies game, but a loose kick by Clevedon resulted in a counter attack by the visitors enabling them to score the decisive try.
Next week, Clevedon are away to Paignton in the league. Coach leaves at 11:00 sharp. Kick off is at 14:30.

Ivybridge 10 Clevedon 12 6th March 2010
Team: M.Lowis, S.Johnson, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, M.Honour, B.Stone, K.Vickery, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: D.Williams, J.Williams, N.George.

This was a hard worked win, but Clevedon should have been out of sight by half time. Following their excellent performance in midweek against Weston, Clevedon started in flamboyant mood. They gave away too many penalties to bring Ivybridge into the game. Clevedon were hungry with ball in hand and took an early lead when Owen Biggins made a devastating break from his own half handing on to Tom O'Rourke who grub kicked through for Steve Johnson to score in the corner. Clevedon continued to run the ball, but at the final execution kicked possession away. Ivybridge kicked a penalty. Clevedon then missed a kickable penalty, but deservedly led at half time.
The second half started with the Clevedon scrum taking the opposition apart, with new signing Matt Honour well to the fore. Props Dave Vivian and pocket dynamo Ben Stone helped to form a formidable front row. As hard as Clevedon tried they could not score mainly due to good defence or lack of finishing power. Joe Williams behind a dominant pack spoiled well and set up Clevedon's second try for flanker Roger Birkin. Mike Lowis kicked the conversion.
Ivybridge never gave up and were rewarded with a converted try deep into injury time. Another good win on the road.
Next week, Clevedon are at home to Newton Abbot in the league. Kick off is at 14:30.

Weston-Super-Mare 19 Clevedon 14 3rd March 2010
Team: M.Lowis, G.Cherrignton, S.Johns, A.Vailes, S.Johnson, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, J.Shopland, H.Russell. Replacements: A.Vailes, D.Vivian, O.Biggins, J.Williams, J.Barzotelli, D.Rawle.

This was an exciting Somerset Cup semi final in which Clevedon, playing against National League opposition, played well. Clevedon had the better of the opening quarter, but could not finish off some impressive approach work. Weston took the lead against the run of play when Clevedon lost their lineout throw. A quick handling movement resulted in Weston scoring a try in the corner. This did not deter Clevedon who hit back with a try after good work by Ashley Vailes, saw Harvey Russell sprint over for a try, which Steve Johnson converted. Clevedon deservedly led 7-5 at half time.

The second half showed Weston more dominant and the boot of their New Zealand fly half continually kept Clevedon on the defensive. Clevedon should have increased their lead but missed a simple penalty. Weston took the lead with a penalty. Poor out of hand kicking by Clevedon did not help their cause. Weston increased their lead with a try from a catch and drive at the lineout. They kicked a further two penalties, but Clevedon were not done and a well worked back move resulted in a try for Tom Thie, which Steve Johnson converted.
On Saturday, Clevedon are away to Ivybridge in the league. Coach leaves at 11:00 sharp. Kick off is at 14:30.

Clevedon 10 Hartpury College 41 20th February 2010
Team: M.Lowis, B.Hazeldine, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, S.Johnson, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: A.Vailes, D.Vivian, C.Cates,

This was a great game of rugby between two sides intent on running the ball. Hartpury undeafeated this season and destined for greater things, fielded a few international players. They started the better of the two sides and applied early pressure and took the lead from a catch and drive at the lineout, which was converted. A poor clearance kick resulted in a penalty for the visitors, which they duly converted. A blindside break from a scrum near the Clevedon line brought their second try. Clevedon's kicking out of hand left a lot to be desired. The positives so far was good lineout work by Roger Birkin and grit and determination from the whole team. Hartpury increased their lead with a try from a scrum, this was converted. Before half time good forward work by Clevedon resulted in a try by Ben Chase. Hartpury lead 22-5 at the break.

The second half saw Clevedon dominate the early stages and it was only good defence by Hartpury that kept Clevedon at bay. A well worked move by the Clevedon backs ended with the final pass being dropped with the line begging for a try. Clevedon still kept up the pressure, but it was a Welsh ten minutes of madness that sealed victory for the visitors. A counter attack from their own line brought a try. From the restart an interception produed a converted try. To clinch it all a good supporting move ended with a converted try.
Not down hearted Clevedon came back and again applied all the pressure and were finally rewarded with a try by Owen Biggins. A good all round performance from Clevedon. Thanks must go to the ageing forkers who got the pitch playable after the wet weather.
Next week, Clevedon are at home to Avonmouth in the league, kick off is at 14:30. On Wednesday March 3rd they play Weston-Super-Mare in the Somerset Cup semi-final, which is being played at Bridgwater, kick of 19:30.

Cullompton 16 Clevedon 13 13th February 2010
Team: M.Lowis, B.Hazeldine, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, D.Williams, J.Potts, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: D.Rawle G.Cherrington, J.Williams

Clevedon lost this highly entertaining game because they did not kick their attempts at goal, poor lineout and a moments lack of concentration.
The came started with a lot of scrappy play. Clevedon took the lead with an interception try by Tom O'Rourke. The kick failed. They then missed a relatively easy penalty. A good attacking move ended with Clevedon kicking away possession when a pass may have resulted in a try. Clevedon agaan missed a kick at goal.
Then came the lapse in concentration. A penalty attempt at goal by Cullompton drifted wide. Instead of Clevedon catching the ball they let it bounce and the hosts poached a try, which they converted. They increased their lead with a penalty and led 10-5 at the break.
Clevedon started the second half with a bang and scored an excellent try with Mike Lowis coming into the line. Again the kick missed. Clevedon did finally take the lead with a penalty by Mike Lowis. The game now became a lottery with the referee giving numerous penalties and not allowing the game to flow. Cullompton kicked two late penalties to win the game. Disappointing but Clevedon were not at their best but did out score the opposition two tries to one.
Next week, Clevedon are at home to table toppers Hartpury College. The kick off is at 14:30.

Torquay 3 Clevedon 13 6th February 2010
Team: M.Lowis, S.Johnson, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, C.Page, O.Biggins. Replacements: J.Russell, G.Cherrington, J.Williams

Clevedon gained yet another success on the road against the might of Torquay. On a heavy pitch on a bright sunny day Clevedon ran the ball on every occasion. Torquay replied with some dogged defence. Clevedon took the lead through a penalty by Steve Johnson. Many a Clevedon attack broke down at the final execution. Clevedon increased their lead with an excellent try by Owen Biggins after a scything break by centre Tom O'Rourke. Torquay hit back with a penalty. When Torquay spread the ball wide they looked dangerous but the Clevedon defence, who has not let in a try in their last five games, held firm. Clevedon led 8-3 at half time.
The second showed a replica of the first. Clevedon running everything but possibly over doing things and squandering many opportunities. Clevedon's forwards, against a heavier eight, aquitted themselves well with Roger Birkin dominating the lineout and Ben Stone prominent in the loose. A delicate chip ahead by flyhalf Tom Thie saw Steve Johnson flash over in the corner for a try. Clevedon were then reduced to fourteen men witha player being sin binned. Minutes later the same fate happened to Torquay. Both sides battled to the final whistle with Clevedon coming away with the points.
Next week, Clevedon are away to Cullompton. Coach leaves at 11:15 and the kick off is at 14:30.

Yatton 3 Clevedon 22 30th January 2010
Team: B.Hazeldine, S.Johnson, M.Lowis, S.Johns, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements:C.Page, T.O'Rourke, B.Kemp.

This was a typical local derby with no quarter given by either side. Clevedon took an early lead with a try by the strong running Simon Johns. Yatton dictated the first quarter but could not penetrate the Clevedon defence. They got on the score board with a penalty. Clevedon's lineout functioned well and it was from a lineout and the following ruck that Owen Biggins scored a fine try. Steve Johnson converted to add to an earlier penalty. Clevedon lead 15-3 at half time.
Clevedon playing up the slope expected to defend but Yatton posed little threat and Clevedon dominated the half and should have scored more points, but Yatton's defence held firm. Clevedon played good controlled rugby and added to their score with a try by Steve johnson after a sparkling handling movement. Ben Hazeldine converted. On a heavy pitch both teams were glad to hear the final whistle and retire to the bar.
Next week, Clevedon are away to Torquay. Coach leaves at 11:00 and the kick off is at 14:30.

Clevedon 28 Chosen Hill 0 23rd January 2010
Team: B.Hazeldine, S.Johnson, M.Lowis, S.Johns, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: J.Kaniecki, D.Rawle, D.Vivian.

This was another good win although hard fought against a determined side who never gave up. Clevedon took an early lead with a penalty by Steve johnson. Chosen Hill had the better of the opening exchanges but the Clevedon defence held firm. Johnson increased their lead with a second penalty. The visitors spoiled very well, which forced Clevedon to kick away possession. The Clevedon scrum again worked well. Owen Biggins made a break from far out but with the line at his mercy dropped the ball. Before half time Dave Rawle went over for a try from a five metre scrum. Clevedon lead 11-0 at the break.

Clevedon had more possession in the second half but over complicated things and found it hard to break down the visitors resolute defence. A fly kick through saw Simon Johns pounce to score a try. Then a slick handling movement saw Johns score his second try. Chosen Hill never gave up and a try scoring pass was intercepted by Johns who ran the length of the field to complete his hat trick. Johnson converted. The Clevedon forwards again played well and Clevedon's backs played well defensively to keep a clean sheet.
On Saturday, Clevedon are away to Yatton. Kick off is at 14:30.

Brixham 9 Clevedon 19 16th January 2010
Team: B.Hazeldine, S.Johnson, M.Lowis, S.Johns, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: N.Tucker, K.Vickery, J.Williams.

On a wet and heavy pitch Clevedon played outstanding rugby to beat second in the table and take Brixham's home unbeaten record. Clevedon kicked off down the slope and applied all the early pressure. The forwards well led by captain John Potts got stuck into the opposition and soon dominated the rucks and mauls. A blindside break put Chris Cates free to slide in over in the corner for a well taken try. Brixham who were playing second fiddle got on the scoreboard with a penalty. Clevedon's lineout worked well with Danny Williams pitching on a sixpence. Clevedon led 5-3 at the break, but the lead should have been more.

The home supporters were now relishing the fact that with the slope they would get on top and win the game. This was not to be, because without the ball you can do nothing. The Clevedon pack rose to the occasion by dominating the scrums and all areas of forward play. The front row of Potts, Williams and Stone were dynamic. Ben Chase and Ryan Smith grafted and in the conditions the back row of Roger Birkin, Harvey Russell and Owen Biggins were always in the mix. Despite all this Brixham took the lead with another penalty. A clever kick through by Mike Lowis saw Owen Biggins sprint on to the ball to score a try, which Steve Johnson converted. Brixham hit back with their third penalty. With time running out another deft kick through by Lowis was seized upon by Johns to score his try. Johnson again adding the points.
Although it was a forward dominated game Clevedon's backs defended and kicked well, with Tom Thie orchestrating things from fly half. Simon Johns stood out in midfield and Ben Hazeldine was sound at fullback. In between all this Joe Williams at scrum half foraged all afternoon. A great result.
On Saturday, Clevedon are at home to Chosen Hill. Kick off is at 14:30.

Cleve 22 Clevedon 3 16th December 2009
Team: J.Kaniecki, J.Williams, S.Johns, A.Ayres, C.Cates, T.Thie, S.Johnson, J.Potts, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, C.Alexander, R.Birkin, J.Shopland, D.Rawle. Replacements: B.Hazeldine, B.Chase, H.Russell

This was a Bristol Combination Cup quarter Final played in wet, cold conditions. Both sides fielded under strength sides with Clevedon fielding seven automatic first choice players. The game saw both sides competing for the ball with the Clevedon forwards doing well especially in the scrums. Cleve took the lead with a well worked try and quickly followed up with a second due to some lax tackling. Clevedon got on the scoreboard before half time with a penalty by Steve Johnson.
The second half was much of the same with Cleve a lttle more sharper than their guests due to the fact that they are a National League side. Clevedon gave of their all and won many turn over balls. Cleve managed two more tries one being converted. Clevedon had their moments and having played with a weaker side can now see that there is a little more strength in depth than normal.
On Saturday, Clevedon are away to Torquay. Coach leaves at 11:15 and the kick off is at 14:30.

Clevedon 60 St Mary's 13 12th December 2009
Team: M.Lowis, B.Hazeldine, A.Vailes, T.O'Rourke, S.Johns, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: J.Kaniecki, D.Rawle, C.Alexander.

This was a one sided affair. St. Mary's at the bottom of the table gave of their best and never gave up, but Clevedon had too many guns. Clevedon took an early lead through a penalty by Ben Hazeldine. This was quickly followed by a try by the colourful Mike Lowis, which was converted by Hazeldine. Clevedon at this early point in the game were well and truly in the driving seat and after great forward driving saw Ryan Smith go over for a try. Hazeldine again converted. St. Mary's lineout was impressive. An injury to a St. Mary's player held the game up for half an hour.

On the resumption, Clevedon struck again with a well worked try by Tom Thie with Hazeldine again adding the points. St. Mary's got on the score board with a penalty. Before the break Simon Johns scored a try after a swift handling movement, which was quickly followed by a try by Tom O'Rourke which Hazeldine again converted. Clevedon led 36-3 at half time.
The second half saw St.Mary's dominate the first quarter, but Clevedon's defence held firm. A break out from the Clevedon 22 metre line saw Ashley Vailes score a try. Clevedon then had a pass intercepted trying to play Barbarian style rugby, which gifted the visitors seven points. Clevedon dominated in the gloom with three more tries from Mike Lowis and two from Simon Johns to complete his hat trick. With Hazeldine converting two. Mary's added to their score with a drop goal. The Clevedon front row of John Potts, Dan Williams and Ben Stone were awesome, while Ben Chase ruled the lineout. The backrow of Owen Biggins, Roger Birkin and Harvey Russell were always in the mix. Joe Williams at scrum half did the basics well.
On Wednesday Clevedon are away to Cleve in the quarter final of the combination Cup, kick off 19:30 and next Saturday, Clevedon are away to Torquay. Coach leaves at 11:15 and the kick off is at 14:30.

Sidmouth 13 Clevedon 14 5th December 2009
Team: M.Lowis, J.Kaniecki, A.Vailes, T.O'Rourke, S.Johns, T.Thie, J.Williams, B.Kemp, D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, A.Fox, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: B.Hazeldine, K.Vickery, C.Alexander.

The wet heavy conditions dictated the game. Both sides were to their credit willing to run the ball. Clevedon played down the slope first half and it was Sidmouth who created the early chances, but fortunately for Clevedon dropped the ball with the line at their mercy. Having survived the early scare, Clevedon scored a superb try with handling of the highest standard covering the length of the field with Bradley Kemp going over in the corner. Sidmouth dominated the lineout area but Clevedon were a force to be reckoned with in the scrums.
Sidmouth took the lead through two penalties. On the stroke of half time a well engineered try by the home backrow resulted in a converted try under the posts. Sidmouth lead 13-5 at the break.
Clevedon now had the daunting task of playing up the slope in the gloom. This task they did well. The forwards dogged and dogged and the backs for a change kept the ball in hand, and applied pressure on the Sidmouth defence. The midfield defence of Tom O'Rourke and Ashley Vailes was awesome. Tom Thie generalled his backs well.
Clevedon reduced the deficit with a Ben Hazeldine penalty having come on as a replacement. Clevedon then had a player yellow carded. This did not hinder the Clevedon play as they continually ground down the opposition. Hazeldine kicked a second penalty. A fine break by Vailes ended with a deft kick into the corner. The ensuing Sidmouth lineout was foiled and from the following scrum Clevedon were awarded a penalty in the last minute and Hazeldine put the kick between the uprights. A good hard earned victory with a good solid forward performance and good handling and tacking by the backs. There were stout displays from Owen Biggins, Harvey Russell and Ryan Smith to name but a few.
Next Saturday, Clevedon are at home to St. Mary's Old Boys. Kick off 14:30.

This game was played on the school pitch and Clevedon played up the slope first half. They got off to a poor start kicking the ball away in the first minute. Paignton ran the ball back at them and won a penalty, which they converted to take the lead. Clevedon seemed to be brainwashed into kicking away possession and this put the visitors in the driving seat. Clevedon on the attack grub kicked to the corner. Clevedon missed it and Paignton counter attacked and scored a converted try under the posts. Paignton ran strongly on to the ball and Clevedon did well to keep them at bay. Clevedon seemed to be under pressure in the scrums. Clevedon did well to turn round only 10 nil down.
The second half saw Clevedon raise their game, and a well worked move saw Simon Johns go over in the corner for a great try. Ben Hazeldine converted from the touchline. Clevedon were now dominating the game by keeping the ball in hand. Paignton's defence was solid and kept Clevedon out. Clevedon gave away three sucessive penalties, which got them up the field and converted the third one.
Not one of Clevedon's better games.
Next Saturday, Clevedon are away to Sidmouth in the league. Kick off 14:30. Coach leaves at 11:15.

Tor 12 Clevedon 25 22nd November 2009

Team: T.Thie, C.Cates, M.Lowis, T. O'Rourke, S.Johnson, B.Hazeldine, J.Williams, J.Potts(c), D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, C.Alexander, D.Rawle, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: N.O'Rourke, M.Harris, K.Vickery, N.Hudson, D.Burns, B.Kemp.
This first round Somerset Cup match was played in blustery conditions. Clevedon played with the wind at their backs and attacked from the first whistle to the last. Clevedon took the lead after a quickly taken tapped penalty saw Owen Biggins go over for a try, which Ben Hazeldine converted. Clevedon had a great deal of possession but lost too many turn over balls. Good pressure by the Clevedon forwards resulted in Dave Rawle scoring a try wide out. Clevedon's lineout worked well with Harvey Russell leaping like a salmon and quick ball off the top saw Tom O'Rourke go over for a try. Before the break Tor scored a try up the blindside from a scrum. Tor defended into the wind well and performed doggedly.
The second half saw Clevedon run everything instead of kicking into the wind. Ben Hazeldine increased their lead with a penalty. Tor due to the wind came more into the game, and Clevedon had a great deal of defending to do. A swift handling movement ended with Tom Thie scoring in the corner. Harvey Russell and Ryan Smith had good games, and Dave Burns on the wing had an impressive debut. The final score went to Tor who scored a superb try. which was converted.
Next Saturday, Clevedon are at home to Paignton in the league. Kick off 14:30. In the evening there is a band night at the club where CORVUS will be in full swing. Everyone welcome, £2.50.a ticket.

This was a great game played in windy conditions. Clevedon playing with a gale force wind at their backs dominated most of the first half. Their lineout was good and the scrum solid. Clevedon took the lead with a well worked blindside move, which Joe Kaniecki finished off with a touch down in the corner. Ben Hazeldine hit the upright with the conversion attempt. Clevedon were not afraid to throw the ball around and play rugby, which lead to their second try. A counter attack started by Mike Lowis and the ball went through many hands before James Shopland touched down on his seasons debut. Hazeldine converted. The hosts hit back with a well worked try and conversion before half time.
Clevedon started the second half by defending well but played most of it in their own half. They conceded too many penalties and Newton Abbott took the lead by kicking three of them. Clevedon were under pressure, but they tackled well to keep their line intact. Newton Abbot now were in the driving seat and finished the game with a converted try when the left winger slipped a few too many tackles to score under the posts. A good performance by Clevedon though.
Next Sunday, Clevedon are away to Tor in the Somerset Cup. Kick off 14:00.

Clevedon 29 Ivybridge 5 6th November 2009

Team: B.Hazeldine, C.Cates, M.Lowis, S.Johns, J.Kaniecki, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts(c), G.Carpenter, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, D.Rawle, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: J.Williams, R.Birkin, S.Johnson
Clevedon attacked from the first whistle and should have scored with the first move of the game. They also missed an early penalty attempt. Good possession won by the forwards saw Clevedon use the blindside and Owen Biggins went over in the corner. Ben hazeldine then kicked a penalty before Owen Biggins went over for his second try. Ivybridge who were still on the bus then had a player sent off for foul play. Clevedon were intent of running the ball at every opportunity and should have increased their lead but the final pass either went astray or possession was kicked away badly. On the positive side the scrummaging was superb and the lineout was good.
The second half saw Clevedon increase their lead with a Hazeldine penalty. Slack play by Clevedon let Ivybridge back into the game and good support play enabled them to score a try. Ivybridge were now putting their game together and it was a dropped ball in midfield that was pounced on by Simon Johns who sprinted in for a well taken try. The Clevedon pack well lead by John Potts gave the backs a good platform but too many chances went begging. Ivybridge pressured the Clevedon line but good work in defence kept them at bay. A loose ball was picked up by Harvey Russell who ran 40metres before passing to Ben Hazeldine to go over for the final score. A well deserved victory to keep Clevedon in the top five in the table.
Next Saturday, Clevedon are away to Newton Abbot. Coach leaves at 11:00, kick off 14:30.

Hartpury College 53 Clevedon 8 31st October 2009

Team: B.Hazeldine, C.Cates, M.Lowis, T.O'Rourke, J.Kaniecki, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts(c), J.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, D.Rawle, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: N.Hudson, N.George, C.Alexander.
This was an eye opener for the Clevedon boys.
The opposition were big fast and fit. Clevedon did not let themselves down and despite the score line played well. Clevedon like other teams were missing key players, who were hard to replace. Hartpury took an early lead with a converted try from a rollng maul. Clevedon hit back when Joe Kaniecki intercepted and ran 50 metres to score a try. Clevedon then took the lead with a well struck penalty by Ben Hazeldine. Clevedon were in the lead after twenty two minutes. From turnover ball a cross kick by the students swa them score a converted try. Before half time they scored two more tries one being converted while Clevedon were down to fourteen men due to a sin binning. Hartpury lead 26-8 at the break.
Clevedon had played well and although the hosts scored four tries Clevedon's tackling was good. Hartpury bigger forwards were effective with the rolling maul and scored two more tries from such drives. Hartpury ran the ball at regular intervals and it was sheer speed that brought them three more tries, one being converted. The midfield of Mike Lowis and Tom O'Rourke played well, while the forwards contested everything. If Clevedon can continue to play with heart like they did against this opposition, their spirit will provide their fans with some good performances and stay in the top half of the table.
Next Saturday, Clevedon are at home to Ivybridge. Kick off 14:30.

Clevedon 8 Cullompton 26 24th October 2009

Team: M.Lowis, G.Cherrington, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, J.Kaniecki, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts(c), N.Tucker, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, H.Russell, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: A.Fox, N.George, C.Alexander.
On a dry windy day Clevedon played into the wind first half and were soon behind to a penalty goal. It was obvious from early on that Cullompton were a well drilled side and Clevedon would have their work cut out. Clevedon took the lead when a dropped ball in midfield was picked up by Owen Biggins to score a try.
Cullompton regained the lead with a second penalty. They went further ahead with a try from a rolling maul. Both sides were intent on running the ball but it was the visitors who increased their lead with another rolling maul try. Mike Lowis kicked a penalty to keep Clevedon in touch. Before the break, Clevedon should have scored a second try. After good work by the forwards the ball was moved swiftly along the backs only for the final pass not going to hand with the line begging.
The second half started with Clevedon on the attack. The scrummaging was good but the lineout was a weak point. Cullompton counter attacked after Clevedon lost possession and aided by poor tackling scored a try wide out. During the last quarter Clevedon dominated the game and were encamped on the Cullompton line but the visitors defence held firm. Again from lost possession Cullompton sprinted away to score a try to put the final nail in the Clevedon coffin.
Clevedon missed the physical presence of Roger Birkin, the Pitching of Gary Carpenter, the kicking of Ben Hazeldine and the tenacity of Ashley Vailes. Clevedon did not use the wind to their advantage and were naive in many areas.
Next Saturday, Clevedon are away to Hartpury College. Coach leaves at 11:00 and the kick off is at 14:30.

Clevedon 22 Yatton 3 17th October 2009

Team: M.Lowis, G.Cherrington, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts(c), G.Carpenter, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, H.Russell, O.Biggins. Replacements: J.Williams, D.Rawle, J.Kaniecki.
This was a typically hard fought local derby with both sides fielding under strength sides due to injuries. The early exchanges were evenly fought but it was Clevedon who took the lead when an attempt at goal fell short and the alert Chris Cates followed up and touched down in front of a bewildered Yatton defence. Mike Lowis converted. Yatton forwards gave a dogged performance but Clevedon had the edge in mobility. Good lineout ball was quickly moved wide for Owen Biggins to crash over for try. Before the interval Sam Osbourne dropped a goal for Yatton. Clevedon lead 12-3 at the break.

The second half saw Clevedon dominate but they were unable to finish off with the final pass going astray. Joe Williams at scrum half had an outstanding game and worked well with the backrow of Owen Biggins, Harvey Russell and Roger Birkin. Good forward play resulted in quick ball for Tom O'Rourke to score a try. Again from good rucking and mauling Ryan Smith emerged to score a try. Yatton never gave up and it was only solid defence by Clevedon which kept them out. Mike Lowis had an outstanding game, and the pack was well lead by skipper John Potts.
Next Saturday, Clevedon are playing Cullumpton. Kick off 15:00.

Chosen Hill 17 Clevedon 50 10th October 2009

Team: M.Lowis, B.Hazeldine, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts(c), G.Carpenter, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, H.Russell, O.Biggins. Replacements: J.Williams, N.Hudson, J.Kaniecki.
This was Clevedon's first visit to Chosen Hill and it proved fruitful. Clevedon had the better of the opening exchanges, but soon found themselves behind to a well engineered converted try. This lead was improved by the conversion of a penalty. So from a deficit of 10 points, Clevedon had their work cut out. The fight back started with a well worked try for Tom Thie, which Ben Hazeldine converted. Clevedon took the lead with Roger Birkin scoring from a rolling maul. Hazeldine converted. Clevedon's lineout functioned better and from one such lineout Mike Lowis emerged from a maul to score in the corner. Clevedon lead 19 -10 at the break.

Clevedon now playing down the slope upped a gear and played some good running rugby. A swift handling movement saw the strong running Simon Johns score for Hazeldine to convert. For a period the game became a stalemate with the home forwards trying to keep the ball tight. A quick tapped penalty saw Tom O'Rourke go over near the posts. Hazeldine added the points. Good work by Chris Cates saw Johns score his second try, Hazeldine again added the points. Chosen Hill were now under the cosh and if Clevedon had not kicked the ball away on three occasions when in attacking positions they would have scored more. Ben hazeldine scored a try, which he duly converted before Chosen Hill scored a consolation try. which was converted. This they deserved for not giving up. Hazeldine had the final say when he kicked a penalty well into injury time.
Clevedon's game next Saturday is at home to Yatton that well renowned village side. Kick off 15:00.

Clevedon 10 Brixham 25 3rd October 2009

Team: M.Lowis, B.Hazeldine, R.Biggins, T.O'Rourke, S.Johns, T.Thie, S.Johnson, J.Potts(c), D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, B.Chase, W.Wheeler, H.Russell, O.Biggins. Replacements: J.Williams, C.Cates, R.Birkin.
Clevedon opted to play into a very strong wind and were soon behind when a clearance kick failed to find touch. Brixham ran the ball back and poor tackling let them in for a converted try. This did not deter Clevedon and due to their forwards they got themselves back into the game with some determined mauling and rucking, keeping the ball at close quarters into the wind. They were rewarded with a well executed try for Rory Biggins to score near the posts. Surprisingly the conversion was missed. Clevedon struggled to win their lineout ball and this became a major disappointment throughout the game. Before half time Brixham increased their lead with a penalty.
Every one now thought that Clevedon had done the hard work into the wind and that it would be plain sailing second half, but it was not to be. Clevedon could not provide a platform to present good ball. They continued to lose their lineout and were under pressure in the scrums. Brixham drove over for a try, which started to set the alarm bells ringing. It did not help Clevedon's cause that the out of hand kicking was poor and the fact that they could not kick the points when they were available. Clevedon conceded a penalty for lack of discipline. The final nail in the coffin came when Brixham ran the ball from deep and scored a good converted try.
Clevedon never gave up and good forward work produced a try for Ben Chase, again the kick failed.
Not a game to be remembered and hope that lessons have been learnt for next week.
Clevedon's game next Saturday is away to Chosen Hill Former Pupils. Coach leaves at 11:15. Kick off 15:00.

Avonmouth Old Boys 21 Clevedon 16 27th September 2009

Team: M.Lowis, B.Hazeldine, R.Biggins, S.Johns, S.Johnson, T.Thie, J.Williams, J.Potts(c), B.Stone, R.Smith, W.Wheeler, H.Russell, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: J.Williams, G.Cherrington, B.Chase
This was a well fought local derby with both sides running the ball. Avonmouth had the better of the early exchanges and their backs looked very sharp. It took good Clevedon defence to keep them at bay. Clevedon gradually got into the game and from good lineout ball a burst through the middle by Owen Biggins set up a try for Simon Johns, which Ben Hazeldine converted. Avonmouth hit back with a well executed try from a lineout, which was converted. Clevedon were under pressure in the scrums but did well at the rucks. Clevedon took the lead before half time through a Ben Hazeldine penalty.
Avonmouth started the second half with a bang and turn over ball resulted in a fine individual try aided by some poor tackling. This was converted.
Swift handling produced a second converted try in as many minutes for the hosts to lead 21-10. The introduction of Ben Chase into the second row helped Clevedon gain stability in the scrums and provide a better platform. Ben Hazeldine reduced the deficit with a penalty. Owen Biggins was outstanding and he penetrated the home defence on numerous occasions. Clevedon now threw everything at Avonmouth but their defence held firm. Hazeldine kicked another penalty to bring the score to 21-16. Clevedon hammered the hosts line and should have scored but wrong options were taken.
Clevedon have now lost their unbeaten tag,and look forward to get back to winning ways next week.
Next week Clevedon are at home to Brixham. Kick off is at 15:00.

St. Mary's 14 Clevedon 23 12th September 2009

Team: B.Hazeldine, G.Cherrington, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, J.Williams, T.Thie, A.Vailes, J.Potts(c), D.Williams, B.Stone, R.Smith, J.Wadsworth, H.Russell, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: W.Wheeler, J.Kaniecki, J.Williams
On a sunny afternoon made for running rugby Clevedon produced some excellent rugby in the first quarter. They took an early lead with a penalty from Ben Hazeldine. Play became scrappy and St. Mary's seemed content to just kick away possession. A quick tapped penalty brought the first try of the match for Clevedon with Simon Johns gliding over and Hazeldine converting. Hazeldine increased the lead with a penalty. Good work by Ashley Vailes put Joe Williams in for a try. Before the break the hosts scored a converted try from a catch and drive at the lineout. Both sides struggled at the linout and this area became a lottery.

The second half was not for the purist. Too many mistakes were made by both sides. St. Mary's playing up the slope applied a great deal of pressure but Clevedon dug deep. Eventually Clevedon scored a try through Ashley Vailes who caused chaos at the base of the scrum and nipped over for a try. Back came Mary's and Clevedon now down to 13 men through injuries and a sin binning hung on for their lives. A great attacking move by Clevedon saw their final pass intercepted resulting in a converted try for Mary's. The final whistle came as great relief to the Clevedon team.
Next week Clevedon are at home to Torquay Athletic. Kick off is at 15:00 with the match being sponsored and hosted by the legendary No Necks.

A large crowd attended this first league match with great expectations having watched Clevedon win their three trial matches. Clevedon were not to disappoint. They started well and applied early pressure on the visitors defence. Clevedon took the lead with a blind side move involving Dave Rawle and Harvey Russell to put Ashley Vailes over in the corner. Clevedon shuold have increased their lead, but had two tries disallowed and over eagerness was the down fall on at least two occasions. Clevedon missed a few kicks into the wind. St Ives kicked a penalty on a rare occasion in Clevedon territory. Clevedon led 5-3 at the break.

Clevedon now with the wind at their backs ran the ball and the backs looked a useful outfit. Mike lowis came into the line and was high tackled and a penalty try was awarded. Simon Johns converted. The Clevedon forwards worked hard against a bigger pack and held their own in the scrums, but struggled in the linesout. Mike Lowis relishing the running game put a grubber kick through for Grant Cherrington to score in the corner. Ben hazeldine kicked a penalty. St Ives in the last quarter played well and scored a try from a catch and drive at the lineout.
Clevedon had the final say with a try for Joe Williams after a slick handling move.Ben Hazeldine converted from the touchline to give Clevedon a well deserved victory.
