WELLINGTON BOOTED !!

Clevedon Colts entertained Wellington in the last game of the season at The Vale. This was the final game in their league campaign.

Clevedon weere full of running, looking to attack at every opportunity and were playing with flare and elegance. It wasn't long before intense forward pressure from the scrum resulted in Andy davis going over for the first try.

Clevedon's constant attacks remained a threat, with the back line cutting some fine lines and looking ready to score. Centre Sam Leigh picked up a pass twenty yards out and glided through the Wellington defence to score Clevedon's second try, with Tom Francis adding the conversion.

Clevedon's defence was massive and prevented the visitors from any kind of attack, but the Clevedon forwards found themselves under pressure from the Wellington catch and drive and were driven back on many occasions.

Just before half time, Andy Davis powered his way over for his second try with Francis adding the extras to give Clevedon a healthy lead after playing some fine rugby.

The second half was more of the same, with the forwards running the ball like backs and probing deep into the Wellington half looking for the next score. And sure enough, it came when Andy Davis burst through and out paced the defence to claim his third try of the match. This was soon followed by second row Dan Gibbs who raced a full 50 yards to claim his try.

Some good inter-passing and a strong break from winger Ali Balcombe resulted in hooker Jack Williams diving over for a try converted by Francis. Wellington then hit back with their trade mark catch and drive and drove Clevedon back over their own line for a well deserved try.

The final say went to Tom Francis who jinked and shimmied past the Wellington defence to score the last try, which he then converted. This wrapped up a fine performance from the boys who all played very well.

This has been a great season with the team finishing second in the league and playing some great rugby on the way. Thanks to all the players and supporters for making it an enjoyable season.

TAUNTON TOPPLED !!!

Captain Joe Trudgian...

Clevedon Colts faced top of the league and unbeaten Taunton in this penultimate game for the clubs young guns. After a heavy defeat at Taunton earlier in the season the boys were looking to get one back on the league leaders.

After giving the home pitch a severe forking and bailing out, several puddles remained and the the pitch was still unplayable, so the decision was made to play at Holly Lane. With the cars loaded with players and the supporters on their way, the boys were ready to do battle.

Clevedon played up the slope and against the wind in the first half so had to play a cagey and tactical game to keep Taunton at arms lengths. The boyss started brightly and seemed full of heartand belief, but it was the league leaders who scored first with a penalty. Constant pressure and some great play saw Clevedon make several visits to the Taunton half, but silly penalties sent them back each time.

Clevedon lost Scrum Half Joe Tucker to a hand injury, but captain Joe Trudgian stepped up to the plate and played a great game at 9, sending out quality ball to the re-shuffled back line.

Further pressure from Taunton resulted in a converted try, which left the boys ten points down and plenty to do, but they kept their heads ups and pushed back up the pitch with every opportunity.

The second half was all about Clevedon. The attacking style of play, coupled with the ferocious tackling was a main feature of the half. With the bullish running of Andy Davis, who was a constant threat driving forward, he released the ball to Kirean Harris who floated through for the first try. The extra points weere kicked by Tom Francis.

Clevedon where now ripping the heart out of the Taunton side, making many bruising tackles and forcing them back at every chance and it wasn't long before Aaron Mason drove to the line and scored the second try with Francis adding the conversion. Clevedon then lost skipper Trudgian to an ankle injury, so back on came Tucker for the final quarter. Good quick ball from the ruck saw the ball swiftly moved along the line to Mike Winters who ran in the third try. Again Francis kicking the extras.

The final passage of play saw the machine Toby Ford break out of his own half and run a full fifty metres to score the final try and leave the opposition wondering what had hit them.

This was a fine squad performance and an excellent display of rugby of the highest standard.

This Saturday the Colts play their last game of the season at home to Wellington kick off 3pm.

YOU CAN'T BEAT A BIT OF BULLY !!

MOTM Charlie Bullimore...

A changed and re-shuffled Clevedon side took the picturesque trip to Wivey for this re-arranged league match with high hopes of doing the double over the somerset side.

Right from the start Clevedon made their intentions clear, playing down the hill attacking right at the heart of the opposition and forcing them into the corners.

This attacking style soon paid off as Captain Toby Ford, who was playing in the centre, crashed over for the first try with the conversion being added by Matt Brothers. Clevedon looked the better side stringing together some fine passages of play, but failure to tackle let the home side in for a converted try of their own.

Clevedon where rattled by this and quickly responded with another try from the electric Ali Balcombe. Wivey hit straight back with a breakaway try. This gave them the lead and the vocal crowd something to cheer about. Clevedon knew they had to score as playing up the slope in the second half was going to be tough.

This spurred the boys back into action, but it was Wivey who had the upper hand until centre Joe Leigh ghosted through the defence, danced around the tackles and floated the ball to Declan Symes who glided over for a try converted by Brothers again.

With a clear lead Clevedon where looking to build on this lead and after good work from the hard working forwards Joe Tucker popped up to score a fourth try giving Clevedon a bonus point.

The second half was a gutsy performance with big tackles being made in a well marshaled defence, led by the pit bull terriers George Thorne and Chris Warren. Not to be out done the man mountain that is Charlie Bullimore was outstanding, charging forward at every opportunity, even running a full 40 metres with the ball before the oxygen tent had to come out to revive him !! The team also welcomed back Matt Bailey who had to be surgically removed from his girlfriend to make the trip and the Colonel himself was back from injury, keeping score and not falling over.

Charlie Bullimore gave a man of the match performance and coupled with the return of Joe Leigh helped the team to this well earned victory.

Once again, thanks for the travelling support. The cheering is always appreciated, apart from the animal noises Victoria and Ann Marie were making during the game !!!

BUNNY WARREN BAGS TWO

BUNNY WARREN BAGS TWO...

Clevedon Colts took to the road this week on the Atlantic Highway to Minehead. With the sun shining and Butlins in the distance it felt like a holiday as several of the supporters took to the sea front and enjoyed fish and chips and a scone or two!!

While this was going on the players where preparing for the game against a different Minehead side than they had faced two weeks ago. The early signs where good as they soon slotted into their groove, passing and running the ball well.

Minehead had other ideas as they attacked the Clevedon side at every chance, which surprised the boys and Minehead made them look quite ordinary.

Minehead drew first blood after Clevedon gave away two penalties leading to a Minehead line out, which resulted in them scoring the first try. With their tails up and the home crowd behind them they just kept pushing forward but stout tackling from the Clevedon centres kept them at bay.

Clevedon started to apply some pressure and the ever present Chris Warren surged forward to score the first Clevedon try. This seemed to spark something in the boys who then strung some phases and patterns together and started to show how they could play.

With a frank discussion at half time from the coaching staff, married with some interesting sign language, Clevedon came bounding out for the second half. Minehead still hadn't given up, but the power and fitness of Clevedon showed through when strong running from Ali Balcombe score the second try.

A change in the pack saw our very own Ginger Prince Jack Haines take to the park and a re-shuffle put Kieran Harris at number eight and things started to change. The clubs top try scorer Joe Tucker crossed for his 21st try of the season after some jinking and twisting. This was converted by Tom Francis.

The boys were now on top and kept piling on the pressure and the best try of the game was saved for Man of the match Chris Warren to run in the final try.

This was not a pretty win, but a win all the same. A big thanks to all our travelling support and the dog !

'HANS UP, BABY HANS UP'

Clevedon Colts with more coaches than Blue Iris...

Clevedon Colts took the short journey to North Petherton for this league encounter, earlier in the season Clevedon scored 79 points against their opposition so were hoping for some more of the same.

Clevedon kicked off and a well placed kick from Joe Tucker saw Hans Johnson leap high into the air to claim the ball and start the Clevedon Juggernaut on it's way. Some fine inter-passing and Clevedon were soon on the score sheet.

North Petherton upped the tempo and had a few flourishes of their own, but they amounted to nothing. This sent out a message to Clevedon to pull their socks up to start playing and start they did. Some exquisite ball handing and ferocious tackling kept the Clevedon boy's in the lead with tries coming at regular intervals.

Yet another try...

Dec Symes was outstanding in the line out and the loose, coupled with a fine display at fly Half from Ali Balcombe and a back row trio any team would be proud of, they set the tone for the game.

A special mention must go to the man of the match 'Hans Johnson' who was magnificent in every aspect of the game and was rewarded with a hat trick of tries during the game and a can of Speckled Hen to celebrate with. Further tries were scored by Joe Tucker 3, Matt Brothers 1, Ali Balcombe 2, Jack Williams 1, Kieran Harris 1 and a penalty try. Joe Trudgian, Mike Winters and Joe Tucker shared the kicking duty kick with five conversions between them.

On a rare visit into the Clevedon half the North Petherton Winger broke down the touch line. This run was cut short when a Clevedon supporter winked at him and the ball was dropped or so we thought. It turned out that Alan Thorne had some Pethy dirt in is eye and was trying to blink it out !!

This was not the only attack the home team had. A North Petherton line out saw them reach high for the ball and break down the blind side. To thwart the attack, quick thinking from stats man Mike Bailey saw him drop to the floor and do the 'Dying Fly', which put the Pethy player off and saw Clevedon steel the ball for one of their many tries.

A big thank you to all the travelling fans and supporters, also well done the the Asda bag packers.

BLANINS BRACES

After a week off, the Colts where keen to get back into action and this week faced Minehead in the league. Sadly they where unable to field a full squad, so Clevedon dropped a couple of players to even things up.

Clevedon were always in control with their superior fitness, strength and ability. To their credit Minehead never gave up, but the end was in sight and the referee decided to cut the second half short as the score line was creeping up and up. A fine debut for Josh Blanin who scored his first points for the team with two well taken tries.

The Colts scored 14 tries, but only converted six of them. The tries where scored by Ali Balcombe 2, Matt Brothers 1, Mike Winters 2, Joe Trudgian 1, Joe Tucker 2, Jack Williams 2, Hans Jonson 1, Chris Warren 1, James Butler 1, Josh Blanin 2.

BROTHERS TAKES THE STING OUT OF HORNETS

This was the colts first league game since December and they were keen to get back into the groove, with a short trip down the motorway to our seaside neighbours Weston Hornets.

With the pitch thawed and the temperature rising, Clevedon took to the field full of confidence and swagger as the whistle blew. The early exchanges where even, but Clevedon were playing all the rugby and failed to execute. Coupled with simple mistakes they looked sure to make hard work of the game.

The scrum was solid with Jack Crichton making his come back and in the line out Clevedon excelled with the ever impressing Dan Gibbs in sparkling form. The pressure soon paid off as the Hornets gave away a penalty and up Stepped Tom Francis to get the first points for the 'Don'. Clevedon seemed to settle into mediocrity and allowed Hornets back into the game who kept attacking the Clevedon line. After a five metre scrum the Hornets managed to wriggle over for a try.

Clevedon re-grouped at half time and with a clear and concise verbal and visual message from the coaches. Ii seemed to do the trick and spurred the team into action and it wasn't long before a cross field kick from Francis picked out winger Matt Brothers to score in the corner.

Clevedon were now on top but still had lots to do to seal the victory as Hornets always looked dangerous on the break. Good approach work and some good handling saw Brothers go in for his second try of the day, which put Clevedon in a clear position for the final few minutes.

Not content with playing out the game, Clevedon kept attacking and when Dan Gibbs popped up from a maul with the ball, like one of those travelling Meercats, he broke left and passed to the flying winger Brothers, who raced over for his third try of the day with Francis adding the extras. This was a good win and good squad performance with a special mention to the five under 16's who have all settled in to the squad and are all performing well every week.

WINTERS WONDERLAND

Clevedon Colts travelled to Sidmouth this week in this rearranged fixture. Due to late cry offs and injuries they could only muster 14 players, not ideal when playing one of the top sides in Devon.

Once at the ground the depleted Clevedon side pulled together and coaches Nick George and Neil Tucker rallied the troops for the battle ahead. A borrowed player from Topsham helped their cause so they went into the game with 15.

The early exchanges were even, but Clevedon had a bit of bite about them and it wasn't long before they started to make ground, stringing together some good phases. With the scores at 0 -0, the match looked to be heading for a draw with two evenly matched sides, but an inch perfect cross field kick from Tom Franics saw Captain Joe Trudgian race over for the first score.

The second half saw Clevedon on the attack again with probing runs from Jason Puddy and Chris Warren, supported well by Hans Johnson and Jonathan Hicks. Jack Haines and Liam Bryant where like two bookends in the front row never giving an inch with Toby Ford and George Thonre a constant threat from the back row.

All this pressure resulted in a mix up in the Sidmouth back division and using his footballing skills, Joe Tucker dribbled the ball all the way to the line to score Clevedon's second try.

The Clevedon Boys worked hard to the very end, defending like warriors. Sam Leigh, Ali Balcombe and Ben Turner all tackled till they dropped to end a great performance by the young guns.

This was a great game played in great spirit with two good sides who both wanted to play rugby. A special mention to James from Topsham RFC who helped the boys out.

WINTERS WONDERLAND

Back on league duty, Clevedon Colts looked to carry on from the previous weeks victory and chalk up another win.

It didn't take long before they were on the scoreboard after a blistering run from Mike Winters who darted over in the corner for his first try. The boys whre now up and running and stringing phases together with their dominant scrummaging and line out work against the larger and heavier Bridgwater side.

Good approach work from the forwards saw scrum half Joe Tucker float over for a try, moving the score along nicely. This was soon followed by the flying winger George Harris who touched down with Luke Blizzard adding the extras.

Clevedon's aggressive rucking and control in the mauls was a main feature with forwards and backs all playing a part. This controlling play paved the way for Luke Blizzard to gallop in from thirty yards for score and end the first half with a healthy lead with only two penalties from Bridgy as a reply.

The second half started in the same vein with the rhino-like Jason Puddy making fierce and bulldozing runs into the Bridgy defence, drawing in defenders so the graceful and elegant backs could be unleashed. This resulted in Mike Winters going over for his second try of the afternoon, capping off a fine performance from the full back.

Not to be out done fly half Tom Francis cut the Bridgy defence in two with a scything run to score under the post, with Blizzard again adding the extras. Clevedon's defence and discipline was immense, not conceding a point in the second half.

The visitors never gave up and tried everything, but the boy's from the 'Don' did not yield. The final word went to the ever present Joe Tucker who ran in the final try of the day to give Clevedon a great victory with a great all round squad performance, but the return of Andy Davis was a big bonus who put in a man of the match performance.

PROLONGED SECOND HALF

Clevedon Colts took to the road this week to visit Wellington, after last week's emphatic victory the young team were looking move up the league with a win on the road.

The larger home side looked handy in the early exchanges and more physical in the contact area, but Clevedon soon found their feet and started to string some phases together, Declan Symes and Jonathon Hicks leaped like salmons in the line out, winning quality ball for Clevedon, whilst the back row of Ford, Thorne and Mason scavenged for every ball.

Clevedon where soon on top and started to dominate around the pitch, Chris Warren foraged deep for the ball and broke free to set up the first try and the resulting ruck saw quick ball release Sam Leigh who ran onto a fine pass and ghosted through the defence for the first try. This was duly converted by the trusty boot of Luke Blizzard.

The second half saw a change in personnel with Kieran Harris joining Jason Puddy in the front row and debutant Hans Johnson in the second row. This added some more weight to the Clevedon Pack who dominated the scrums. Sadly this didn't stop Wellington hitting back with a try of their own. Clevedon regrouped and fought back, pushing up the field. Several chances went begging until the try machine Joe Tucker crossed for his eleventh try of the season again Luke Blizzard was on hand to add the extra points.

Wellington kept up the pressure and some weak tackling saw them score again, but they missed the conversion still leaving Clevedon in the lead with only minutes to play or so we thought. A prolonged second half saw Wellington break back down field and the resulting ruck saw them kick a drop goal to win the game by one point.

A cruel way to lose, but a great game to watch and support with both sides playing some fine rugby. A fine performance from Ali Balcombe was a main feature of the game along with the returning Aaron Mason.

TUCKER'S TRIO OF TRIES

Kev Weaver: One of 13 tries for the Colts...Click the picture for more.

Three tries from sumptuous scrum half Joe tucker, two from the delectable Dan Gibbs, two from iron man Luke Blizzard , two from Mike (Bernie) Winters and one each for Ali Balcombe, Gorgeous George Harris , Matthew (Birthday Boy) Brothers and Jonathan (Hit Man) Hicks completed the try fest for the young Clevedon side who proved far to strong for the visitors.

With several players unable to play, four members of the under 16's answered the call from the coach and played their first colts match of the season, Jack Haines, Ali Balcombe, Ben Turner and Chris Warren. All of them played extremely well, competing in all aspects of the game.

A man of the match performance from Luke Blizzad, who also kicked severn conversions, was a main feature of the match with strong running and aggressive tackling. Clevedon welcomed back Mike Winters who has been on County duty. His strength and experience was unsurpassed as he tore up the midfield, making many breaks into the opposition half.

Captain Toby Ford led by example making tackle after tackle along with his back row partner George Thorne. This was a great afternoon for the Clevedon boys who battled hard throughout the game against a determined North Pertherton sided who refused to give up until the final whistle.

CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR

Redruth took the long journey back home knowing they had been in a game after a sterling performance from the young Clevedon side.

The visitors from Cornwall had obviously been eating their pasty's as they where rather large but this didn't phase the Clevedon boys who stuck to the task and played some good rugby. Dan Gibbs excelled again and Toby Ford didn't stop tackling, but the size and power of Redruth proved too much on occasions and they ran in a couple of tries.

Clevedon still pushed hard and after some nifty foot work the bearded Joe Tucker nipped over for a try, converted by Luke Blizzard. The second half was dominated by Clevedon and it wasn't long before Captain Ozzie James powered over with Blizzard converting.

Clevedon could not get back on terms and after suffering a couple injuries, the game drifted away, but this was a fine performance against an older, larger and more experienced team.

TOUGH DAY AT THE OFFICE

Clevedon traveled the short distance to Taunton for this league game. With players away on academy duty this gave the coaching staff a chance to field a changed side for this encounter. The Taunton squad where bigger, quicker and more physical than Clevedon and it wasn't long before they had scored. The young Clevedon side tried har, but found it hard to win any ball and the score keep going up.

There was a glimmer of hope when Clevedon applied some pressure in the corner and manage to squeeze Jonathan Hicks over in the corner. The second half was more of an even affair and Clevedon had some spark about them, the centre partnership of the Leigh brothers Sam & Joe added a buzz within the team and after a tough few minutes, Clevedon were again pressuring the line and the ever reliable Joe Tucker popped up to score Clevedons second try.

This was a game to reflect on and draw positives, the return of Tom Pinder and the addition of Joe Leigh and another man of the match performance from Toby Ford.

FORD FOCUS

Clevedon Colts had their first trip of the season with Tuckers Tours to Caldicott South Wales. These are always hard games, but great for the development of players and enjoyable for the team.

The game got off to a bad start for the Clevedon boys as a mix up from the kick off saw the larger Caldicott team rumble through for a try within a minute. This seemed to spark some life into the team and they soon got into their groove playing some attractive rugby.

Clevedon slipped behind further, but never gave up. A fine through kick from Joe Tucker saw his wing man Matthew Brothers gather the ball and sprint to the line, with the conversion from Luke Blizzard.

Caldicott keep the pressure on Clevedon scoring again, but it wasn't long before Sam Leigh pick up on a loose ball and glided through the defence to score Clevedons second. Clevedon where now on top in the game, but still points behind. After a kick to the corner a well taken line out from Paddy Trower saw the Clevedon pack drive the heavier opposition back to their own line with the ever present Joe Tucker on hand to scurry over for the try.

A main feature of the game was the confidence the team played with and a Man of the Match performance from Captain Toby Ford and it showed that you can loose a game but still come out on top.

Clevedon Colts 12 Penarth Colts 17

STRICTLY COME RUGBY

Penarth made the Journey with a large squad of players and supporters who enjoyed the clubs hospitality and the rugby their where about to see.

Double Try scorer Joe Tucker...

This was the Colts first game in two weeks and were looking to carry on with their 100% start to the season. Clevedon made a bright start to the game soon taking control of the set piece. Jason Puddy was outstanding at prop while Dan Gibbs commanded the line outs.

Clevedon applied constant pressure on the Penarth back line with the free running of Freddie Knight and the elegance of Jake Redman in midfield causing a real threat. This soon resulted in the Clevedon pack rumbling forward and setting up Joe Tucker who waltzed his way over the line like 'Brendon Cole' for the first try of the game.

Things then took a turn for the worst for the home side, Freddie Knight had to leave the field with an ankle injury, then influential captain Joe Trudgian was taken of with a broken collar bone and Aaron Mason with a dislocated shoulder.

This set Clevedon a challenge with only two replacements, Jonathan Hicks stepped up to take on the wing duties and a reshuffle in the pack saw Matthew Bailey join the side. Still one player short, Penarth hit back with a try on their own, half time couldn't come soon enough.

Assistant coach Nick George raided the touch line gave up his boots and got Harry Lampert on for the second half. Clevedon were now back at full strength, but by this time Penarth had brought on five replacements, which sparked the locals into action.

Fine touch kicking from Tom Francis kept the visitors pinned in their own half and after Toby Ford had his try disallowed the resulting scrum saw Joe Tucker pirouette round two defenders to score his second, converted by Francis.

With only minutes left Clevedon where running out of steam as Penarth pushed forward for the win and right at the death a wide move saw the Penarth winger cross in the corner for the victory.

This was great game between two good sides and maybe a draw would have been a fair result. Man Of The Match Joe Tucker - That's my boy!!

WILLIAMS SEALS THE DEAL

Clevedon Colts travelled to local rivals Bridgwater for their second game of the season looking to build on last weeks victory. Team preparation was cut short due to a rearranged kick off time, but this didn't seem to worry the players. With Bridgwater being coached by an ex-Clevedon player and fellow front row companion of the Clevedon coach, this was going to be an important game to win for the Clevedon boys.

As the game got under way Clevedon soon settled into their groove with the backs running their moves and the forwards dominating the scrum and line out once again. A well placed penalty kick into the corner gave the forwards a chance to try their now trade mark move, which resulted in Aaron Mason crossing for the first try.

Clevedon then went of the boil and let the home side back into the game. Too many penalties and wrong options gave Bridgwater the chance to strike back and score.

With some choice words from the coaching team, Clevedon got back on top and it wasn't long before the mercurial running of Sam Leigh resulted in his first try for the club.

Clevedon started the second half in front, but soon Bridgy were back on the score sheet with a converted try after a sleepy Clevedon drifted slightly. Clevedon had realised that by playing their rugby they could score tries. A strong forward surge and swift hands saw Matthew Brothers score to put them back in front.

A main feature of the game was the bullish hooker Jack Williams, who was always hungry for the ball and turned defence into attack many times, which resulted in him scoring a try of his own. A Man Of The Match performance to be proud of.

Probing kicks into the corners from Francis and Tucker kept the home side pinned back in their own half to prevent any further action from Bridgy, giving Clevedon a hard fought victory.

Clevedon Colts 17 - Wiveliscombe Colts 7

TRUDGIAN TROOPS WIN !!

This was a big day for the players as it was the clubs first game as Under 18's in a re-structured league.

Clevedon took to the field in confident mood and it wasn't long before the forwards demonstrated their strength and power in the set piece, with solid scrummaging from the pack and dominance in the line out.

Clevedon's free running backs also had plenty of ball but the visitors defence held strong as Clevedon found it difficult to penetrate the red and blue wall of Wivey.

Clevedon's new signing Sam Leigh had a fine game at fly half with mercurial running and great distribution and this coupled with aggressive play from the back row set the home side up for the first try.An under pressure Wivey booted the ball into touch giving Clevedon the line out. An intelligent call from the experienced hooker Jack Williams saw the lively Aaron Mason cross for the first score. Clevedon maintained possession throughout the first half but failed to cross the line.

With the wind behind them, the second half should have been an easier affair, but the Wivey team came out all guns blazing and took the game to Clevedon scoring a fine try of their own. Some tactical words from Tucker and Brace from the side lines soon had the boy's back on track.

The sweet left foot of Tom Francis pinned the visitors in the corners of their own half and with the forwards turning the screw at every opportunity. Quick ruck ball, quick thinking and the quick hands of the terrier like Joe Tucker fed the ball to the ever impressive Jonny Hicks who ghosted over for the second try.

It wasn't long before Clevedon scored again, after several attempts to burrow over from short range scrum half Tucker danced his way through the defence to score. This was followed by the trusty boot of Luke Blizzard who added the extra points.

This was a good first outing for the players with many of the team coming from the under 17s. Things look bright for the future.

A man of the match performance from Toby Ford was the main feature of this game and congratulations to Luke Bizzard who played the whole game and then went on to run the Bristol Half Marathon on Sunday.
