Annual Dinner & Dance 2011

Coleridge Vale Clubhouse, 6th May 2011, 19:00

The calm before the storm...

Clevedon Rugby Club held their annual Dinner Dance at the clubhouse for the very first time. A marquee was erected in the garden and outside caterers provided an excellent meal, which was well received if the empty plates were anything to go by.

The whole affair was once again professionally MC'd by Director of Rugby Jeff Durant, who ensured things moved on apace to allow time for the dancing and other activities.

Trophies were awarded to the following players:

The speeches this year were excellent. They were thoughtful, funny, poetic and heartfelt, although the heckling wasn't up to its usual standard!

Chosen Hill F.P. 25 Clevedon 27

23rd April 2011

Team: M.Taylor, D.Burns, S.Johns, D.Ashfield, G.Cherrington, T.Thie, S.Johnson, G.Carpenter, B.Kemp, D.Vivian, R.Smith, A.Giltrow, T.Wain, O.Biggins, J.Shopland. Replacements:O.Jones, N.Warren, A.Glen.

Fun and Frolics after the game...

Well, that's it then. The season is over and Clevedon finish with a win, finally ending up ninth in the table.

Not a bad result considering and to celebrate, fancy dress was ordered by Captain Thie. Any duplications were severely dealt with in the usual fashion and with only two people to punish, it was 'orrible to watch.

The post match atmosphere was a little bit different from normal, because Chosen Hill were ecstatic to get the one point they needed to stay in the league(they got 2) and Clevedon were happy just to get the win.

The travelling contingent watched an entertaining game, but for the Chosen Hill crew, it was torture as they were down 10 nil after twenty minutes and tantalisingly within 5 points at the break.

That stretched to 8 just after the restart and the nerves were jangling. Chosen got their pick and drive going to get in front ten minutes later and midway through the second half they scored their third try and then a penalty, 18-13.

Clevedon head for the try line...

With 15 minutes to go, and the way the game was ebbing and flowing, all possible outcomes were on the cards. Chosen Hill's bonus point try was scored from broken play ten minutes from time and the crowd, coaching staff and local wildlife went bonkers.

Chosen were safe and Clevedon were staring an ignominious defeat in the face. It was a credit to them that they scored two converted tries to win the game, but by then and taking nothing away, Chosen Hill were utterly spent having been dogging away all afternoon for that crucial league point.

Congratulations to them and commiserations to St. Ives who were relegated as a result.

Next Saturday Clevedon Colts host Penarth Colts. The kick off is at 15:00.

The Dinner Dance is at the club on Friday 6th May. Tickets are on sale in the clubhouse from either Andy Lyon or Kate Potts.

Chew Valley II 18 Clevedon II 26

Clevedon second team won Somerset Two North by 5 points and are now promoted to Somerset One next season. Congratulations are in order to everyone concerned and with the third team narrowly missing promotion by a point, it was a good season all round for the club.

The report for the second team will be here shortly, once Captain Rawle writes it!!

Clevedon 35 Chippenham 37

16th April 2011

Team: M.Taylor, D.Burns, G.Cherrington, D.Ashfield, T.Wain, T.Thie, S.Johnson, B.Kemp, G.Carpenter, D.Vivian, R.Smith, O.Jones, J.Shopland, O.Biggins, A.Giltrow. Replacements:N.Tucker, C.Page.

Dave Burns his way up the field...

The great and the good were out in force for the pre-match sponsors luncheon and a great success it was too. The well enlivened crowd watched a good game of rugby littered with good and bad bits by both sides.

Clevedon managed to get 2 bonus points from this match and could move into seventh place if they get a bonus point win next week, which would not be a bad finish given the troubles they've had this season.

Clevedon could have won this match with a last minute penalty, but chose instead to boost Chippenham's confidence by letting them win. The Chips are deservedly going up and leaving South West One for the National leagues. We wish them well.

Next Saturday, Clevedon are away to Chosen Hill in their last league game of the season. The kick off has changed to 14:30 and the coach is at 11:30. Fancy dress please.

The 2xv play Chew Valley away and need to win to ensure automatic promotion to Somerset One. This is a huge achievement by the second team and a great credit to Captain Dave Rawle, who has seen his blend of youth and experience pay dividends.

Meanwhile, the 3xv All Stars were narrowly pipped to the Somerset 3 North title by Avon, who were given an AWO and five points - what a way to win lose the title. Well done to Nellie and his own unique blend of experience and youth.

9th April 2011

Team: M.Lowis, D.Burns, M.Taylor, D.Ashfield, C.Cates, T.Thie, S.Johnson, B.Kemp, D.Vivian, R.Smith, B.Chase, O.Jones, T.Wain, S.Johns, A.Giltrow. Replacements:J.Potts, A.Glen

Simon Johns on his way to his wedding next week...

This was the last game of a five match fortnight for Clevedon. The hottest day of the year so far was their undoing. If the weather had been cooler, Old reds wouldn't have stood a chance.

Clevedon came to play rugby, but unfortunately the hot weather prevented them from doing so in any meaningful way, although they never gave up.

Having rested several more players injured and unavailable from the previous week, Clevedon fielded replacements who did a grand job and all of them should be proud of the commitment they showed.

Old Reds knew that a five pointer was crucial to their playoff hopes and were in no mood to be sympathetic to Clevedon, despite Clevedon doing them a favour by getting injured {;>)

Old Reds were lucky, but we wish them well in the play offs.

Next Saturday, Clevedon's last home game is against league winners Chippenham. The kick off is at 15:00 and is preceded by an excellent VP and Sponsors buffet luncheon at 13:30

Somerset Cup Final
6th April 2011

Team: M.Taylor, M.Lowis, S.Johns, D.Ashfield, S.Johnson, T.Thie, A.Vailes, D.Vivian, M.Honour, B.Kemp, R.Smith, B.Chase, A.Giltrow, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements:N.Tucker, C.Cates, D.Burns, J.Potts, G.Carpenter, O.Jones.

Steve Johnson scores Clevedon's first try...

The great and the good of Somerset Rugby were out in force to watch this game under dodgy floodlights.

If the corners had been any darker, the officials wouldn't have missed the four match winning tries that Clevedon scored.

From the kick off, WSM were under the cosh for 7 minutes, but then managed to break out of their 22 with a long kick. One Clevedon mistake later and their tails were up, leaving Clevedon to play catch-up rugby.

This was the fourth game in 12 days for Clevedon, but they continued to scrap for every ball and showed their usual resilience and tenacity throughout.

The final whistle was a welcome relief because Clevedon knew they had only two and a half days to recover before facing Old Reds in the league.

I bet they can't wait.

Clevedon 10 Old Redcliffians 24

2nd April 2011

Team: S.Johnson, D.Burns, M.Taylor, D.Ashfield, C.Cates, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, M.Honour, G.Carpenter, R.Smith, B.Chase, D.Rawle, T.Wain, H.Russell. Replacements:B.Kemp, O.Jones, O.Biggins.

Dean Ashfield scores Clevedon's first try...

A team of three turned up for this match looking very fetching in their snug, sky blue shirts. This meant that the regular club line runner was let loose on the sidelines and was free to wander wherever he wanted to.

This didn't please the normal crowd at all who suddenly found themselves joined by a loudmouth spouting rubbish from behind the ropes. He'd had a couple of pints, a large buffet meal and was poorer by a fiver (raffle and programmme), so it's understandable that he felt the need to let off steam and have a good old shout.

The fun is over for him now and it's back to normal duties next Saturday, away to Old Redcliffians in the league, kick off 15:00.

Before this game, Clevedon have to play the Somerset Cup Final against WSM on Wednesday evening down at Bridgwater, coach leaves at 17:30 and kick off is at 19:30

SECRET MERGER TALKS TAKE PLACE

This is devastating news for all Clevedon and Yatton rugby club members and supporters.

A freedom of information request at Wikileaks has revealed that secret merger talks have been taking place between unknown individuals within each club.

They are at an advanced stage and the merging of these two proud and historic clubs is scheduled for the start of the 2011-2012 season.

This matter will not be put to a membership vote and it seems that the driving force for this clandestine endeavour is money and wild ambition.

It is thought that the pitches and clubhouse at The Vale in Clevedon will be the home of the newly formed club. The Yatton ground will be sold to a property developer, despite the covenant on it, and the proceeds used to build a squad of players capable of getting into the National Leagues and beyond. The new club name is likely to be either Yattacle RFC or Cleveyatt RFC and will play their rugby in the South West One West league as Yatton cannot climb out of their current league.

Are these the individuals or the spokesmen?...

Spokesmen from each club have categorically denied that the talks have taken place. However, they could not explain why outline planning consent has been applied for and suggested it was a hoax perpetrated by people who have a vested interest in destablising both clubs.

They could not suggest who this might be, but they were overheard discussing that Clevedon ought to wear the Yatton green change strip for the semi-final, but decided against it just before kick-off after protests from the changing room.

What is certain though, the current memberships will not accept this proposal. As a matter of urgency the memberships of both clubs should ask serious questions of their respective committees and ascertain the truth about these irresponsible and capricious merger plans.

Anything less would be catastrophic for both these family oriented clubs.

Act now or lose the clubs you love!

Somerset Cup Semi-Final, WSM

Team: M.Taylor, S.Johnson, S.Johns, D.Ashfield, J.Williams, T.Thie, A.Vailes, D.Vivian, M.Honour, B.Kemp, R.Smith, B.Chase, D.Rawle, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements:A.Giltrow, G.Carpenter, D.Burns, J.Potts, O.Jones, T.O'Rourke.

A battered and victorious Captain Tom Thie...

Clevedon didn't quite know what to expect from this game.

The general feeling was that they would be up against it and struggle against a fitter and faster outfit, who train 4 times a week.

The first 10 minutes didn't allay these fears either as the students took an early seven point lead by using their pace to get close to the Clevedon line. A catch and drive from the lineout caught Clevedon napping and this stirred them up so that they ended the first half only 3-7 down.

The second half saw the Clevedon forwards dominate in all phases, which allowed the Clevedon backs to run at the opposition, creating all sorts of mayhem.

A change of some personnel gave Clevedon fresh legs and the impetus to gain the lead within 15 minutes of the restart. They never looked back after that and deserved the win to reach the final next week against WSM on Wednesday 6th April at Bridgwater, kick off 19:30.

Clevedon 34 St.Ives 11

26th March 2011

Mike Taylor sets off...

This was a must win game for St. Ives who travelled to Somerset with a full contingent of the heavy brigade.

For much of the first half this weight advantage worked well for them as they dominated territory, but failed to capitalise on their usually dominant driving maul. When their pack were reduced to 14 men after 22 minutes, Clevedon took advantage and scored a converetd try, eventually winning the half 13-3.

Five minutes into the second half St. Ives had another binning and St.Ives improved their score with a penalty. From the restart, Clevedon scored a break away try by Captain Thie, after a mix up by the St. Ives backs. By the time, St. Ives were back to full strength, Clevedon had a lead of 20-6.

Three more tries followed in the last 10 minutes, two of them Clevedon's who began to dominate knowing the win was just minutes away.

At the final whistle, the crowd went wild and one person in particlular was mightily relieved that Clevedon are now safe in this league, providing of course the league don't decide to relegate more than three teams.

We wish St. Ives well in their remaining two fixtures.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to Old Redcliffians, preceded by a Vice President's buffet luncheon at 13:30. The kick off is at 15:00. The 2nd and 3rd XV are without a game.

Clevedon 76 Walcot 20

19th March 2011

Team: M.Taylor, S.Johns, D.Ashfield, T.O'Rourke, J.Williams, T.Thie, A.Vailes, D.Vivian, M.Honour, B.Kemp, R.Smith, B.Chase, A.Giltrow, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements:G.Carpenter, T.Wain, S.Johnson.

Tommy O gets his try...

There hasn't been this many points scored at The Vale for many years and certainly not since Captain Tom Thie was in short trousers.

The whole game was end to end despite what the scoreline might suggest. The fact that Walcot got a bonus point for scoring four tries shows how open, loose and carefree the game was.

Walcot, despite being well understrength, embarrassed Clevedon on a number of occasions with their direct running and committed play. Fortunately for Clevedon this didn't matter too much as they ended up scoring 12 tries overall.

With a half time lead of 33-5, Clevedon continued to play 15 aside sevens and at times looked like they were enjoying themselves, especially after last weeks narrow defeat. What they didn't enjoy though was fourteen man Walcot scoring three second half tries.

There are some tough games coming up and Clevedon are sure to return to a more controlled pattern of play to secure the points they need to stay in this league.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to St. Ives, preceded by a Vice President's buffet luncheon at 13:30. The 2nd XV are away to Winscombe and the 3rd XV are at home to Nailsea & Backwell. All kick offs are at 14:30.

Clevedon Youth Excel

13th March 2011

Dom Hanley receiving the Bristol Combination Cup trophy...

Sunday was a great day for the Clevedon Youth teams.

The U17s were playing in the Combination Cup Final against Walcot, which they drew 27-27, but won the cup by outscoring their opponents 4-3 on tries. A close and tense encounter by all accounts.

Meanwhile, the U16s were winning the Somerset Cup quarter final also against Walcot, 20-24 and now march on to the semi finals.

O'Connor is surrounded as he scores...

What a despairing match this was for Clevedon and at a time when they need more than just losing bonus points.

On their arrival in Sidmouth at 13:15, the sun was shining and the mood was confident, but that was as good as it got for Clevedon as the weather turned grey and drizzly just before the kick off.

Sidmouth were the first on the scoreboard after Clevedon had applied good early pressure and this set the scene for the lead to change hands seven times throughout the game. Clevedon were leading 22-25 with 17 minutes to go and the mood lifted a bit, but they couldn't hold onto the lead or retrieve it after Sidmouth scored a try with ten remaining.

Lots of endeavour from Clevedon, but it couldn't disguise the fact that this was yet another game that got away from them, placing them well in the mix at the lower end of the table. With back to back home games coming up, they need to bounce back with a vengeance to restore some of that confidence they had a few weeks ago.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to Walcot, preceded by a Vice President's buffet luncheon at 13:30. The 2nd XV are at away to Keynsham and the 3rd XV are gameless. Both kick offs are at 14:30.

Clevedon v Old Redcliffians

26th February 2011
POSTPONED

Are Clevedon ever going to play Old Reds?

This is the second postponement this season. It has been rearranged for the 2nd April, which means that on successive weekends they will tear into one another for the fun of it.

If you include last season's cup matches that were never played because Clevedon were given walkovers then you can understand why the question was posed in the first place. However, Old Reds did go onto to win the RFU Intermediate Cup that season so these forthcoming league matches will be a great test for Clevedon, particularly if Reds are pushing for the play off spot.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to Paignton with a VP buffet lunch at 13:30. The 2nd XV are away to Bristol Harlequins and the 3rd XV are at home to Imperial 2nd XV. All kick offs are at 14:30.

Somerset Cup News

Clevedon are playing Bath University at WSM on Wednesday, 30th March in the semi final of the Somerset Cup. The kick off is likely to be around 19:15, but will be confirmed nearer the date.

Ivybridge 20 Clevedon 20

19th February 2011

Team: M.Taylor, D.Burns, D.Ashfield, S.Johns, J.O'Connor, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, G.Carpenter. A.Dauncey, R.Smith, B.Chase, H.Russell, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: O.Jones, A.Giltrow, M.Honour.

Captain Tom Thie scores this week...

Clevedon paid the price for not having a game last weekend and have lost the momentum that had been building in the previous weeks. On a very soft surface the Clevedon heavies were disinclined to motor about the park in their usual rampaging style. They chose instead to keep it tighter than normal, denying the backs the quantity of ball that would've seen off Ivybridge.

As it was, Ivybridge were within five minutes of winning until a Clevedon penalty sailed over to tie the scores.

When the final whistle went at 20-20 the silence was deafening - Clevedon knowing they should've won and Ivybridge stunned by knowing that they nearly did. No wonder the diehard supporters were silenced.

Meanwhile, back in Somerset, Clevedon seconds won 47-0 against Hornets and the thirds won 24-7 against Yatton with both teams remaining at the top of their leagues - no boring draws for them.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to third placed Old Redcliffians. The 2nd XV are away to Walcot III and the 3rd XV don't have a game. Both kick offs are at 14:30.

Nailsea & Backwell II 19 Clevedon III 20

12th February 2011

Team: John Harvey, Bradders, Gambie, Jonno, Silver, Pagie, Asti, Simon Dunn, Nellie, Dave Pugh, Alan Dunn, Jammer, Eggie, Jenks, Russ the boot. Replacements: Eric Swallow, Donks, Matt Davis, Nick Wills, Jeff Dunn, Matt Card.

Kemp burrows in for the first one...

The first thing that strikes you about this Clevedon third team is the dearth of youthful faces.

With a tally of over 4000 games between them, Clevedon used their experience to full advantage to be leading 5-13 at the break. Two tries by young Bradley Kemp (Bradders) and a penalty by older Mark Jenkins (Jenks) was the result of good disciplined work by the whole team.

Playing against a far more youthful Ravens side, Clevedon turned round and played down the slope. They increased their lead with a try by young Dave Pugh (he needs a nickname) and converted by Jenks. With twenty minutes left on the clock Clevedon attacked, but it was thwarted by a dropped pass. Backwell picked up the loose ball in their own half and the young whippett they had on the wing did the rest. He sped away upfield away from the Clevedon cover, leaving Uncle Jeff Dunn (Dunny) sprawling with a hammy and all of a sudden Nailsea & Backwell were back in it.

Nellie and his men...

Like the problem-solving bird they've taken their name from, The Ravens realised what they had to do. Ten minutes later they got the ball to the same whippett who repeated his feat to make the score a tantalising 19-20.

Captain Neil O'Rourke (Nellie) gave his team a good pep talk under the posts, but it was so good that Clevedon were reduced to 14 men within a couple of minutes of the restart. Clevedon needed all that 4000 game experience to repel a rejuvenated Ravens side in those dying minutes. A good, solid win that keeps Clevedon on top of the league.

Clevedon 2XV had a their third home walkover of the season, because Winscombe were unable to travel. Clevedon remain top of their league with the extra 5 points, but with no increase in their points difference - is anything being done about this?

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are away to Ivybridge, the 2nd XV are at home to Hornets and the 3rd XV are also at home to Yatton III. All kick offs are at 14:30.

Clevedon 30 Cullompton 6

5th February 2011

Team: M.Taylor, D.Burns, D.Ashfield, S.Johns, J.O'Connor, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, G.Carpenter. A.Dauncey, R.Smith, B.Chase, H.Russell, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: O.Jones, B.Littleton, S.Johnson.

Dauncey adds one more to the front row try count...

With each of the team wearing a single pink sock in support of the breast cancer charity, Clevedon produced a game to remember and gained another 4 points in the process.

The seconds and thirds both won as well and are now topping their respective leagues, so it was a great weekend for Clevedon rugby and with the Somerset Paddies headlining the evening charity event, the whole weekend was a resounding success.

The only downside to the weekend was the loss of two match balls that mysteriously disappeared after the match - at 40 quid a time, it's an expense that the club could do without.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV do not have a game, but the 2nd XV are at home to Winscombe and the Colts are also at home. Meanwhile, the mighty thirds are away to Nailsea & Backwell II in a rearranged near top of the table clash. All kick offs are at 14:30.

Clevedon 23 Camborne 0

29th January 2011

Team: M.Taylor, J.Williams, D.Ashfield, T.O'Rourke, S.Johns, T.Thie, A.Vailes, D.Vivian, G.Carpenter. A.Dauncey, R.Smith, B.Chase, J.Shopland, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: O.Jones, B.Littleton, C.Cates

Vivian ups his try count...

Camborne were half an hour outside Exeter when they got the phone call from the Pitch Inspectors. They were told that the Vale was frozen solid (when are the council going put in the undersoil heating?) and the game would be switched to the school where the pitches were 80% playable.

Camborne continued their journey hoping for a rapid thaw. It didn't really happen, but the pitches had softened by the time the game started. After some judicious spade work to loosen the worse affected areas, the game kicked off in picturesque Swiss Valley where the sun never made an appearance all afternoon.

A win at the school is a rare thing for Clevedon these past few seasons and it was good to see both teams running the ball to keep their core temperatures up. However, the watching crowd suffered in the bitterly cold wind and were glad to return to the clubhouse for a drink.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to Cullompton. Kick off is at 14:30 with a Vice Presidents buffet preceding it at 13:30.

Chosen Hill v Clevedon

POSTPONED
22nd January 2011

Clevedon travelled all the way to Cheltenham only to start their return journey half an hour after arriving because of a frosty pitch.

After an inspection and discussion of the playing surface by both team captains (and others), it was decided that it was too dangerous to play. Disappointing to say the least, especially as this game will not be played until Easter Saturday, 23rd April 2011 because of Chosen Hill's five match fixture backlog.

Dan Hand scores...

Clevedon II played Old Reds III in a top of the table clash, which Old Reds narrowly won 10-12 to put them top of the league.

A large crowd, made even bigger with the arrival of the returning 1st team, watched a competitive game on a very sticky pitch. The game was finely balanced at 10-12 after lanky Fly Half Dan Hand scored his own converted try ten minutes from time. The Clevedon forwards pounded away during the dying minutes, but couldn't find a way through, much to the disappointment of the home supporters. An enjoyable game and a result that leaves Clevedon three points behind Old Reds with a game in hand.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to Camborne, while the 2nd XV are away to Chew Valley. Both kick offs are at 14:30 with a Vice Presidents buffet preceding it at 13:30.

Clevedon 17 Brixham 19

15th January 2011

Team: T.Thie, J.Williams, S.Johns, D.Ashfield, J.O'Connor, T.O'Rourke, A.Vailes, D.Vivian, B.Kemp, A.Dauncey, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: J.Shopland, D.Burns, G.Carpenter.

Vailes stretches to score...

With The Vale waterlogged after the big freeze, this game was played up at the school where the sloping pitch was dry and firm. However, a lot of work was needed to get the game played. Post protectors, flags, ropes and stakes were transported and put in place and with the help of a few mole hills, the rabbit scrapings were filled in by a willing band of loyal members.

They were rewarded with a game that was full of incident and commitment. Clevedon had Brixham on the ropes for long periods, but were kept at bay by Brixham's well organised defence. Clevedon had this match won ten minutes from time, but couldn't make it stick despite their commendable efforts.

Roger Birkin and family...

We wish a speedy recovery to the two Brixham players who required hospital treatment after this match. Get well soon lads.

This was the last game of the season for MOTM Roger Birkin, who returns to New Zealand to continue his gap year education. Hopefully he will return to Clevedon after he's got fed up with enyoying himself. Come back soon Rog and keep in touch.

Next week, Clevedon are away to Chosen Hill FP. The coach leaves at 11:30 and kick off is at 14:30.

Postoned Matches Rearranged

8th January 2011

The games against Old Reds and Walcot that were postponed due to the big freeze have been scheduled for the 26th February and the 19th March respectively. Please click the fixtures link above to view.

There is a Somerset Cup match to be arranged as well and the date of this will be known soon.

Avonmouth 13 Clevedon 5

8th January 2011

Debutant James O'Connor takes his try well...

Team: S.Johns, C.Cates, D.Ashfield, T.O'Rourke, D.Burns, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, G.Carpenter, A.Dauncey, R.Smith, B.Chase, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: J.O'Connor, A.Glen, O.Jones

Another loss to The Mouth must have been hard to bear for both the team and the travelling support.

By the sound of it, in a game that ebbed and flowed, Clevedon had their chances, but failed to capitalise on them. Consequently, they are still waiting for another league win, the last of which was on the 20th November 2010. Turning over Brixham next week would be the ideal game to get it.

Next week, Clevedon are at home to Brixham. The kick off is at 14:30.

Clevedon 19 Bristol Harlequins 9

2nd January 2011

Chase gets the first try of 2011...

Team: M.Taylor, D.Burns, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivian, B.Kemp, G.Carpenter, O.Jones, R.Smith, R.Birkin, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: A.Glen, J.Potts, D.Rawle, D. Ashfield, J.Barzotelli

The pitch was sticky, the weather grey and cold, so the spectators were hoping for a New Year tonic to cheer them up. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, both teams were unable to provide it. Not that they didn't try, it was just that they were ring rusty and were more intent on thumping into one another to keep warm. The spectators felt like doing the same, but contented themselves with verbal bantering instead.

Next weeks game is away to Avonmouth Old Boys. The kick off is at 14:30.

Clevedon v Walcot

18th December 2010

4 inches on The Vale...

A PROFESSIONAL INSPECTION OF THE PLAYING SURFACE WAS IMPOSSIBLE TODAY AS IT WAS COVERED WITH 4 INCHES OF SNOW. IT WAS THEREFORE CONCLUDED THAT IT WOULD BE UNPLAYABLE AND THE GAME HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL THE NEW YEAR.

The next game is a Somerset Cup match at home against Bristol Harlequins on Sunday, 2nd January 2011, kick off is at 14:00.

A Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to everyone.

Wadebridge 23 Clevedon 12

11th December 2010

Team: M.Taylor, D.Burns, G.Cherrington, S.Johns, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivian, M.Honour, T.Dauncey, O.Jones, R.Smith, A.Vailes, C.Page, H.Russell. Replacements: C.Williams, A.Glen, B.Kemp.

Vailes scores the opener...

One of life's great imponderables was solved last weekend at Wadebridge.

Throughout the rugby world the question on everyone's mind has been 'Why on earth are they called The Camels'?

The answer surely lies in the fact that a small partisan section of their crowd seemed to get the hump with just about everything that went on during the game - nothing escaped their attention!

There were referees, touch judges and playmakers in abundance each with their own Tourette's interpretation of events, so it made for a lively and interesting touchline atmosphere!

Whatever the reason was for their great humpiness during game, it was quickly forgotten in the bar afterwards - a home win was all the Camels wanted.

The game itself was a fully committed affair and when Wadebridge exerted too much pressure just after half time Clevedon were playing catch-up rugby and couldn't get on top until the last 10 minutes, but by then it was too late. Humphh!

Clevedon v Old Redcliffians

4th December 2010

A waterlogged and frozen Vale...

AFTER A CAREFUL AND EXPERT INSPECTION OF THE PLAYING SURFACE, THIS GAME HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL THE NEW YEAR

St. Ives 48 Clevedon 11

27th November 2010

Team: S.Johnson, J.Barzotelli, S.Johns, M.Taylor, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivian, A.Glen, B.kemp, O.Jones, B.Chase, R.Smith, W.Wheeler, H.Russell. Replacements: A.Dauncey, D.Burns.

MOTM Russell scores Clevedon's only try...

Clevedon should've known the game was up when the windscreen wipers on the coach failed on the picturesque way down to St. Ives. The driver and assorted helpers couldn't fix them during the game, so a replacement coach was dispatched from WSM. In the meantime, a local coach was hired to ferry the Clevedon team to St. Austell for the swap over, but first had to go via Redruth hospital to collect a stitched up Captain Tom Thie. Clevedon finally arrived home after a 14 hour day, with nothing to show for it except half a dozen stitches, some bumps and bruises and a few left over wine and cheese party biscuits.

The game itself was dominated by the gargantuan St. Ives pack who feasted themselves on Clevedon to score six forward tries out of seven, all of them from their powerful driving mauls. They were hungry from the start as they chose to play into the wind in the first half knowing that their forward oriented game wouldn't be affected. The killer 40th minute converted try by St. Ives knocked the stuffing out Clevedon who had clawed themselves to a 10-11 lead after thirty minutes.

In the second half, against the wind, Clevedon battled away and created several good chances, but could do nothing once St. Ives got hold of the ball and kicked to the corner where they continued their feeding frenzy.

Next week, Clevedon are at home to Old Redcliffians kick off at 14:30.

Clevedon 12 Sidmouth 7

20th November 2010

Team: M.Taylor, J.Williams, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), S.Johnson, G.Carpenter, B.Kemp, A.Dauncey, O.Jones, R.Smith, W.Wheeler, T.Wain, H.Russell. Replacements: A.Glen.

Just one of the many scrums...

In the week when Clevedon heard they had been deducted 5 points for fielding an ineligible player in the Chippenham game, Clevedon knew they needed a win to keep their mid-table form going.

Clevedon got their win by containing a lively Sidmouth side where the Clevedon touch judge was hard pressed to keep up with play. Even when he did, the flag was raised in a very lethargic way and not with his usual irksome sprightliness. But he could be forgiven because during the previous evening he had entertained over 250 guests at his quiet 60th birthday party.

The silly old sausage should never have taken the flag on in the first place as the grey, mirky and cold Clevedon weather seemed to mirror his whole pathetic demeanour. Lets hope he improves before next week.

Next week, Clevedon are away to St. Ives. The coach leaves at 09:00 for a 14:30 kick off.

Cullompton 0 Clevedon 0

23rd October 2010

Team: M.Lowis, J.Barzotelli, M.Taylor, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivyan, B.Kemp, T.Dauncey, O.Jones, R.Smith, H.Russell, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: W.Thomas, M.Honor, D.Burns.

The game didn't kick off until 15:10 because the ref, who travelled from London, was held up in the car park known as the M5 southbound.

Impressive Dave Burns warms up...

Once the game started, Clevedon's poor old touch judge came in for a fair bit friendly banter from the large Cully crowd. They were full of sparkling wit and repartee. "Should've gone to Specsavers judge" was a typical comment! I suppose when you're enduring a game that was destined to be 0-0, you've got to entertain yourself somehow, especially as they'd waited an extra ten minutes for the game to start.

The game itself was mostly a midfield battle of defences with the occasional skirmish near the try lines. Several failed kicks at goal added to the soggy game that Clevedon should've lost when Cullompton were awarded a straight forward 22 metre penalty with 2 minutes remaining. It would've been rough justice for Clevedon had it gone over because they had most of the game throughout, but just couldn't sneak past the steadfast Cully defence.

On a brighter note, the hospitality was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed by the travelling Clevedon committee members who could hardly move afterwards...

Next week's game is at home to Ivybridge. Kick off is at 15:00.

Camborne 27 Clevedon 33

16th October 2010

Team: S.Johnson, J.Barzotelli, M.Taylor, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivyan, B.Kemp, G.Carpenter, O.Jones, T.Dauncey, R.Smith, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: C.Williams, B.Martin, D.Burns.

Bradders opens the scoring...

Captain Tom Thie is a kind and generous man who decided to inflict no more punishment on Camborne in the final seconds of this match.

Clevedon were awarded a kickable penalty and were told by the ref that this would be the last kick of the match. Instead of opting for the extra three points, Cap'n Thie hoofed the ball off the park to end the match.

I suppose it could've been the euphoria of grabbing the lead back in overtime that caused him to do this selfless act of sportsmanship. In the cold light of day though, three more points would've been handy and Camborne denied their deserved bonus point.

A great match played with great enterprise by both sides. The post-match beer has never tasted so good.

Next week's game is away to Cullompton and the coach leaves at 11:30. Kick off is at 15:00.

Clevedon 31 Chosen Hill 9

9th October 2010

Team: M.Taylor, J.Barzotelli, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivyan, B.Kemp, G.Carpenter, R.Smith, O.Jones, W.Wheeler, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: W.Thomas, T.Dauncey, S.Johnson.

Vivian munches three to score...

Chosen Hill beat Brixham, Brixham beat Clevedon and Clevedon beat Chosen Hill all in the space of 2 weeks. Last year the points tally would've been equal, but with the advent of the bonus point and a maximum 5 point win, Chosen Hill lost this triple header by a point - there's a long way to go yet though.

Next week's game is away to Camborne and the coach leaves at 09:00. Bring your breakfast and enjoy a nice day in sunny Cornwall. Kick off is at 15:00.

Brixham 52 Clevedon 15

2nd October 2010

Team: W.Carpenter, D.Poole, S.Johns, M.Taylor, J.Barzotelli, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivyan, M.Honor, G.Carpenter, R.Smith, B.Chase,W.Thomas, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: O.Jones, A.Glen, D.Burns

Only one man to beat...

If Clevedon had ideas that they could emulate the win they managed on a soggy day in January this year, then the first minute binning put paid to it.

Against it from the off, Clevedon manage to level it 3-3 after 8 minutes. Not too bad, but with the 10 minute binning coming to a close, Brixham scored a converted try to make the most of their numerical advantage.

However, being back to full strength didn't help much as Brixham continued their powerful running into Clevedon territory. They were 21-3 up when a second binning turned red, leaving Clevedon with 14 men and 47 minutes left to play.

Clevedon battled hard and managed to score a well contolled, forward surging Biggins try of their own, right on the stroke of half time to be only 29-10 down.

Clevedon scored a cracking, Joe Williams inspired try when Brixham were reduced to 14 men within 2 minutes of the restart. This was to be Clevedon's last points of the game.

The 14 men continued to play enthusiastically despite their disadvantage and it wasn't until the last ten minutes, when their fitness began to fade that Brixham got past the fifty mark.

A disappointing result for Clevedon that made the wet and windy journey home a test of endurance, despite stopping for some nourishing comfort food on the way.

Next week's game is at home to Chosen Hill FP. Clevedon II are away to table-toppers Old Redcliffians II. The kick off is at 15:00 for both matches.

Debutant Adam Glen eyes up the opposition...

Clevedon got their first 5 pointer of the season, but there were no overt celebrations of victory. It was one of those games where they thought they had it won after 10 minutes and then they sat back and waited for it to happen. The 3-10 half time scoreline reflected this attitude. Fortunately, the hair dryer did the trick in the second half.

The whole post match atmosphere was distinctly subdued as well, even when the habitual post-match drinking competition was taking place. The only time it livened up was when the coach was leaving and the travelling supporters had to gulp down their full pints. Ha Ha, very funny lads!

Hooker Matt Honour swerves...

The one upbeat exception was veteran Dauncey who was regaling anyone that would listen about his cup winning exploits years ago and when he was last played in the first team in 2005. As we all know, Tone is one of life's garrulous types and it's a real pleasure having him back in the changing room dispensing stories about the old days! He's that missing link between now and the recent past and he is intent on educating the youngsters in this Clevedon side about the achievements that need to be repeated if they are to be remembered for anything. Heady stuff I can tell you.

Next week, Clevedon are at home to local rivals Avonmouth Old Boys. The kick off is at 15:00

Walcot of course did not have much to smile about either had other things to think about.

Clevedon 16 Wadebridge Camels 6

11th September 2010

Team: M.Taylor, J.Williams, S.Johns, T.O'Rourke, G.Cherrington, T.Thie(c), S.Johnson, R.Smith, M.Honor, A.Dauncey, W.Wheeler, B.Chase, H.Russell, O.Biggins. D.Rawle Replacements: G.Carpenter, W.Carpenter, D.Vivian

Captain Tommy Thie celebrates Clevedon's first win...

Wadebridge had a longer journey up the M5 than they bargained for and arrived half an hour before kick off, but this didn't seem to affect them at all as they started the game at right old gallop.

In doing so, they conceded two early penalties before getting one of their own after 20 minutes. Both sides threw the ball around and although Clevedon were playing far better than they did last week, they had to rely on a dropped pass in midfield to score the only try of the match.

Johns charges on...

Within 3 minutes of the restart, Wadebridge got another penalty (16-6), which was the reward for a yellowed Clevedon player in the red zone(?). After that there was no more scoring, although the game was entertaining enough and laced with enough mistakes to make the final minutes worrying.

Clevedon had got their first points of the season and now look to improve their tally next week away to Walcot. The kick off is at 15:00 and the coach leaves at 12 noon.

Chippenham 58 Clevedon 15

4th September 2010

Team: D.Poole, A.Ayres, S.Johns, M.Harris, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), S.Johnson, D.Vivian, M.Honor, A.Dauncey, R.Smith, B.Chase, N.Hudson, H.Russell, J.Williams. Replacements: G.Carpenter, D.Burns, O.Jones

This was a game where the fitness levels of the Touch Judges needed to be high to cope with the end to end stuff played during this match. More often than not, as the scoreline suggests, it was newly relegated Chippenham that did more of it than Clevedon did. That's not say that Clevedon were completely overrun, it's just that when Chippenham moved it wide at pace, Clevedon were unable to stifle the attacks.

Cruncher Crane gets a standing ovation on his return to Chippenham...

Strangely, Chippenham seemed to switch off for the last 20 minutes of both halves, which allowed Clevedon to do their stuff. Unfortunately, it wasn't until the final quarter that Clevedon used the ball well and managed to score three tries in quick succession. Last season, they would only have been consolation tries.

However, this season has seen the introduction of a bonus point for four tries and this gave Clevedon the incentive not to give up until the final whistle. It was exciting for the Clevedon travellers until the very last pass of the match, which went forward, denying Clevedon a bonus point that they didn't deserve anyway. Interesting times lie ahead!

Next week, Clevedon are at home to newly promoted Wadebridge Camels. The kick off is at 15:00.

Reunion Photos

28th August 2010

Youngster Ross Brace should be given the Freedom of Clevedon for the magnificent work he did getting this reunion together. The last one was 10 years ago, so he had his work cut out just to contact everyone again.

21 Captains...

He used his Miss Marple like detective skills to good effect and was able to unearth players from each of the last eight decades. There were 21 Captains present and a lot more players who had played with them, so reminiscing was what it was all about.

It was a great night and one that won't be forgotten by those who were there, although the beer might have already made a few of us forget what went on anyway.

We'll just have to have another in ten years time - see you there!

Pre-Season Trials

17th August 2010

On Saturday 21st August Clevedon, who were supposed to be playing Tor away, are now playing at the Ashley Down Tournament instead, starting at 12 noon.

Directions to the Ashley Down ground can be found here.

This tournament will be a stern test for Clevedon as several strong Bristol clubs have entered. Clevedon must be on their guard and go all out to prove that the excellent pre-season training and coaching has been worthwhile.

Also this Saturday, the Colts, under new coach Neil Tucker, entertain Bridgend Youth down at the Vale. Kick off is at 15:00.

On Bank Holiday Saturday, the 28th August, a Clifton Development XV visit the newly refurbished clubhouse. They should prove quite an attraction to the reunion brigade who will be hoping that their old club gives them another reason to celebrate.

Ross Brace has this news about the reunion:

Not long to go now!!. Here's just a quick update about timings -

  • Friday 27th - Club open from 19:00. Come and have a look around the new facilities. Exit 21 playing later in the evening
  • Saturday evening - Reunion kicks off at 7.00 with a few short speeches and then a short DVD presentation. I must warn you that there are some scenes in the DVD that will shock. The DVD has been modelled on Brokeback mountain, so when you see the picture of John Evans you will understand. There is also a pig roast for everybody.
  • IF YOU HAVE NOT GOT A TICKET LET ME KNOW YOU ARE COMING AND I WILL PUT ONE ASIDE.
  • Last update on the veggie option. Along with a bap, crackling, apple sauce, salad and a napkin it has been pointed out that pigs are veggie as well, so how can it be meat!!!!

Cheers for now, Ross

New Season Approaches

26th July 2010

Way back in June, Clevedon's director of rugby, Jeff Durant, announced a new coaching and leadership team.

The new head coach is Kim Hazeldine, who was with Clevedon last season as assistant coach. He will be ably supported by new captain and player-coach Tom Thie. Owen Biggins and John Potts will join them as player-coaches and they'll will provide much needed experience for this young Clevedon team.

Clevedon started training in late June and if anyone would like to sample the coaching that will be on offer, then please come down to The Vale on Tuesdays and Thursday, 18:30.

The Leg of Death

January 2006

James Russell: I've never been treated differently

In the January 2006 edition of Rugby World, James Russell our very own "Peg Leg", was the subject of a four page article.

The Rugby World writer spent a whole day at the club, taking photos, recording anecdotes and generally understanding what makes James tick.

This article is in PDF format and can be viewed by clicking the image.

Clevedon RFC are very grateful to Rugby World for allowing us to reproduce this article here.
