Fun and Frolics after the game...

This game meant a great deal to Chosen hill, who required one point to stave off relegation.

Clevedon started brightly with Steve Johnson kicking them into the lead with a penalty. A fine break by Owen Biggins on the half way line saw him dummy to go over for a try, which Johnson converted.

Chosen hill were very committed and their forwards had the upper hand over the Clevedon eight. Their lineout worked well while Clevedon were still trying to get to grips with theirs.

Just before half time Chosen Hill scored a try, from a scrum near the Clevedon line. Clevedon lead 10-5 at the turn around.

Johnson kicked his second penalty. This then started the home sides fight back and Clevedon seemed to go into their shells. A catch and drive at the lineout brought them a try. This was quickly followed by a try from a push over. Chosen Hill were now in the driving seat having kicked a penalty to lead 18-13.

A counter attack from deep in their half saw the hosts score their fourth try, which was converted. They now led 25-13.

During the last ten minutes Clevedon woke up and the forwards started to produce quick ball and a flowing movement saw Dean AShfield score a try under the posts. Johnson converted.

Chosen Hill thinking they had done enough, faltered at the last hurdle and a good handling movement and support play saw Biggins go in for his second try, which Johnson converted to secure victory.

A good game to end a long hard season.

Next Saturday Clevedon Colts host Penarth Colts. The kick off is at 15:00.

The Dinner Dance is at the club on Friday 6th May. Tickets are on sale in the clubhouse from either Andy Lyon or Kate Potts.

Dave Burns his way up the field...

This was an enjoyable end of season game with Chippenham already promoted as champions and Clevedon safe from relegation.

Chippenham started brightly, but it was Clevedon who took the lead with a Steve Johnson penalty. Chippenham soon equalised with the same. Johnson then put Clevedon in front again with his second penalty.

Chippenham took the lead when a loose ball was run back at Clevedon and poor tackling let in the visitors for a try which was converted. Johnson then kicked his third penalty. Chippenham who had the edge on pace wide out scored a try from a slick handling movement.

Clevedon then scored a superb try by prop Dave Vivian after good work from Owen Biggins and James Shopland. Johnson converted. On the negative side Clevedon's lineout was not functioning. Another slick handling movement saw Chippenham regain the lead with a try. Clevedon were not undone and a try by scrum half Steve Johnson after a blindside break put Clevedon back into the lead. Clevedon led 21-20 at the interval

From the restart Clevedon had the chance to go further ahead, but kicked the ball away on the line. Chippenham went into the lead with a penalty. This was quickly followed by a converted try and it looked as if Chippenham would run away with the game.

Clevedon had other ideas. With the lineout now working well, a long throw allowed James Shopland to go over for a try, which Johnson duly converted. Back came Chippenham who scored a try under the posts, which was converted.

Clevedon were not done and from a scrum a fine break by flyhalf and captain Tom Thie saw him score a try, which Johnson added the points.

In the dying moments of the game Clevedon were awarded a kickable penalty, but opted to kick for the corner. The following line out came to nothing and then the final whistle went to end a great game of rugby.

Next Saturday, Clevedon are away to Chosen Hill in their last league game of the season. The kick off has changed to 14:30 and the coach is at 11:30. Fancy dress please. The 2xv play Chew Valley away and need to win to ensure automatic promotion to Somerset One. This is a huge achievement by the second team and a great credit to Captain Dave Rawle, who has seen his blend of youth and experience work well with each other.

Simon Johns on his way to his wedding next week...

Five games in 14 days and this last one was a game too far for Clevedon, against a well drilled, rampant Old Reds side.

Old Reds took the lead from the kick off when Clevedon lost the ball in contact. They increased their lead with a penalty. A catch and drive at the lineout was their next score, which was converted. This was quickly followed by another try, for them to lead 20 nil in as many minutes. Clevedon, in between all this, tried to play rugby and ran the ball well, but could not break down a well organised defence. Before half time the home side scored two more tries, one being converted, to lead 32 nil at the break.

Due to the extreme heat Clevedon replaced drained players. Clevedon were caught napping at the restart when a quickly taken tapped penalty resulted in a try. A good handling movement brought their next try.

Clevedon had plenty ball with Ben Chase doing well in the lineouts. Clevedon continued to run the ball, but as in the first half failed to break down the defence. As the game drew to a close Old Reds scored three more tries ,one being converted.

Right at the final whistle a good handling movement saw Mike Lowis go ovar for a try, which Steve johnson converted.

Next Saturday, Clevedon's last home game is against league winners Chippenham. The kick off is at 15:00 and is preceded by an excellent VP and Sponsors buffet luncheon at 13:30

Steve Johnson scores Clevedon's first try...

This Somerset Cup Final was a good advert for running rugby. Clevedon, taking on the might of National League side Weston, put up a great fight after a disasterous start giving away seven points in as many minutes. Westod increased their early lead with a second try .Clevedon then missed a reasonably easy penalty attempt. Weston scored two more tries through their weight and pace advantage.

During all this Clevedon had the territorial advantage, but the Weston defence was well organised. Before the interval a good handling movement saw Steve Johnson score in the corner to open Clevedon's account. He converted from the touch line. Weston led 24-7 at the break.

The second half saw Clevedon score straight away when the kick off was followed up and pressured Weston into an error, which Clevedon capitalised on for Tom Thie to score and Johnson to convert. It was now game on.

Weston hit back immediately with a catch and drive at the lineout to score a converted try. Forward power produced their next try and they turned loose ball into a final try.

In between all this Clevedon still threw the ball around and were unlucky on a few occasions, but did get a third try through a swift movement ending with Chris Cates scoring in the corner.

Clevedon's injury list is again lengthened having played four games in 11 days. This is unacceptable for an amateur team.

Dean Ashfield scores Clevedon's first try...

Tired legs and resting of players in readiness for the Somerset Cup Final did not help Clevedon's cause against a strong, talented side going for promotion. Old Reds started brightly and took the game to Clevedon. The visitors took the lead with a try after a swift handling movement. Clevedon's first visit into the Reds 22, saw clevedon kick away possession instead of keeping ball in hand.

A mistake in midfield allowed Reds to counter and score a second try. Again Clevedon's kicking out of hand was poor.

From a lineout and quick ball spread wide saw a third try for Reds. This was converted. Ten minutes before the break Clevedon came more into the game through their forwards, who started to dominate. Clevedon then lost Steve Johnson to injury.

Steve Johnson tries to get away...

The second half started the same as the first with Reds in the driving seat and they scored their fourth try, which was converted. To add to their woes clevedon lost scrum half Joe Williams to injury. This seemed to stir Clevedon and with their forwards now starting to dominate produced good ball for Dean Ashfield to score a try. The easy conversion sailed wide. Ashfield then left the field due to injury.

Clevedon never gave up and with a now patched up side kept Old Reds under pressure and were rewarded with a try, after good forward mauling seeing Owen Biggins going over the line.

A good hard competitve local derby.

A battered and victorious Captain Tom Thie...

This Somerset Cup Semi Final was a hard fought affair with the students intent on running the ball and the club side intent on wearing them down with physical contact. Bath took the lead in the first minutes with a converted try, after Clevedon made a nervous start. Clevedon regrouped and settled down and got on the scoreboard with a Mike Taylor penalty. 7-3 remained the score to halftime.

The second half showed Clevedon taking the game to Bath and they took the lead with a try by Alex Giltrow, which Steve Johnson converted. Bath threw everything at Clevedon, but their defence held firm. A slick move in midfield resulted in Dean Ashfield scoring a try under the posts for Johnson to convert. The Clevedon pack were outstanding and Ashley Vailes at scrum half was very destructive and caused numerous problems. A well earned and deserved victory.

Mike Taylor sets off...

Team: M.Taylor, S.Johnson, S.Johns, D.Ashfield, J.Williams, T.Thie, A.Vailes, D.Vivian, M.Honour, B.Kemp, R.Smith, B.Chase, D.Rawle, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements:A.Giltrow, G.Carpenter, D.Burns.

This was a game involving three seaside names, Clevedon, St.Ives and Weymouth the referee.

On a firm pitch both sides were intent on running the ball. St.Ives started the better and took an early lead with a penalty. This was an important game for both sides and the early dominance of the visitors had the home supporters worried.

Clevedon drew level through a penalty by Mike Taylor. A good supporting handling movement saw Dean Ashfield score under the posts for Taylor to convert. St Ives still applied a great deal of pressure, but the home defence was rock solid. Before the break Taylor added another penalty for Clevedon to lead 13-3.

Rawle in orbit...

The second half followed the same pattern. St.Ives, through their big pack, winning plenty ball but they seemed to lack ideas of what to do with it. St.Ives kicked a penalty to reduce the deficit.

From the restart confusion in the visitore defence let in Tom Thie for a well taken try. Taylor converted. Back came St.Ives to score a try from a catch and drive from the lineout. Again from the restart confusion in the St.Ives defence let in Clevedon for another try by Alex Giltrow. Taylor again adding the points.

The Clevedon pack by now had worn the St.Ives pack down with fine performances in the scrums and lineouts. The back row of Biggins, Russell and Rawle worked well as a unit. The front five stood up to the task with flying colours.

Quick ball released the backs for Simon Johns to score wide out again for Taylor to add the points. Clevedon's midfield defence was rock solid. The half backs of Thie and Vailes worked well and Johnson and Williams on the wings tackled well to give a good team performance.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to Old Redcliffians, preceded by a Vice President's buffet luncheon at 13:30. The kick off is at 15:00. The 2nd and 3rd XV are without a game.

Tommy O gets his try...

Team: M.Taylor, S.Johns, D.Ashfield, T.O'Rourke, J.Williams, T.Thie, A.Vailes, D.Vivian, M.Honour, B.Kemp, R.Smith, B.Chase, A.Giltrow, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements:G.Carpenter, T.Wain, S.Johnson.

On a fine sunny day and a well marked firm pitch, Clevedon thrilled the crowd with a feast of rugby with Walcot joining in to score four good tries. Clevedon took an early lead after good support play put Dean Ashfield in for a try, which Mike Taylor converted. Ashfield struck again with his second soon after with Taylor again converting. Walcot hit back straight away when Clevedon dropped the ball from the restart and Walcot punished them with a good try in the corner. Clevedon then had a player yellow carded. Clevedon now were under a little pressure, but from a scrum in their own 22, number 8 Harvey Russell picked up and went the length of the field to score a try under the posts. Taylor adding the points.

Clevedon playing with plenty of confidence ran the ball at every opportunity instead of kicking it and a good counter attack saw skipper Tom Thie score in the corner. Just before half time a superb handling movement saw Alex Giltrow go under the posts for Taylor to add the conversion.

Vailes anjoys the Walcot 8...

The second half started the same as the first with Clevedon in the ascendency with the forwards providing good scrummage and lineout ball. Ben Chase in the lineout was dominant. Another good handling move saw the influential Owen Biggins score a try, again Taylor converting. Walcot came back into the game with good forward play which resulted in a try. From the restart Ashley vailes caught the ball and ran to the try line before offloading the ball to Ryan Smith to score with Steve Johnson converting.

Clevedon were again on fire and a good run by Tom O'Rourke put Alex Giltrow in for his second try. Johnson converted. Back came Walcot with their third try, which was well deserved. Another good handling movement saw Tom O'Rourke score. Relentless pressure saw Biggins get his second after good work by Vailes. Clevedon now seemed to take a breather and poor tackling let in Walcot for their fourth try. When Clevedon woke up they finished with two late tries one by Steve Johnson, which he converted and Dean Ashfield who completed his hat trick. A good game with both sides giving their all.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to St. Ives, preceded by a Vice President's buffet luncheon at 13:30. The 2nd XV are away to Winscombe and the 3rd XV are at home to Nailsea & Backwell. All kick offs are at 14:30.

O'Connor is surrounded as he scores...

Team: M.Taylor, J.O'Connor, S.Johns, D.Ashfield, D.Burns, T.Thie, J.Williams, D.Vivian, M.Honour, G.Carpenter, R.Smith, A.Giltrow, H.Russell, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements:B.Chase, B.Kemp, T.Wain.

This was a battle where the lead changed hands on numerous occasions. Clevedon had all the early play, but could not turn their dominance into points. They lacked a general in midfield to dictate things and a flyer on the wings to put the ball away. Sidmouth took the lead against the run of play with a penalty. Clevedon equalised with a penalty by Mike Taylor. An occasional swift handling movement ended with James O'Connor scoring a try, which Taylor converted. A poor kick out of hand by Clevedon saw Sidmouth counter attack and score a try. Before half time Sidmouth kicked two penalties to lead 14-10. Clevedon forwards were outstanding with Harvey Russell and Owen Biggins well to the fore.

The second half started with Mike Taylor reducing the deficit with a penalty. Sidmouth replied in kind. The Clevedon forwards were producing good ball from the set pieces and on one occasion a good back move saw Simon Johns go over for a try. Taylor converted. Clevedon now led 20-17. A dropped ball by Clevedon resulted with a fly kick down field and Sidmouth winning the race for the touch down. Sidmouth now led 22-20.

Back came the Clevedon forwards and a catch and drive at the lineout resulted with a try for Dave Vivian. Clevedon now led 25-22. Clevedon should now have won the game, but kicked too much ball away. The final nail in the Clevedon coffin came when a lost ball was turned over and the Sidmouth winger ghosted past the covering defence for the winning try. A great disappointment. The Clevedon front row were exceptional and won good ball well backed up by Alex Giltrow, Ryan Smith and Dave Rawle.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to Walcot, preceded by a Vice President's buffet luncheon at 13:30. The 2nd XV are at away to Keynsham and the 3rd XV are gameless. Both kick offs are at 14:30.

Gilly Giltrow scores on his debut...

This lower half table game was a nail biter right down to the final whistle. Paignton started strongly and had Clevedon under the cosh. The visitors took an early lead with a penalty. A few good releaving kicks put Clevedon into the Paignton half and from one good forward play saw Clevedon take the lead with a try by debutant Alex Giltrow. The conversion hit the upright.

The Clevedon forwards were now having a good spell and further domination lead to a try by Ashley Vailes. Mike Taylor converted. Taylor then increased the lead with a penalty.

A good counter attack and weak tackling saw Paignton reduce the deficit. On half time Taylor kicked another penalty for Clevedon to lead 18-8.

The second half saw Clevedon having to defend for most of the game, but their well marshalled defence held firm. Clevedon received two yellow cards, which made their task more difficult. For all their attacking, Paignton could only muster two penalties. Clevedon struggled in the lineout, but more than held their own in the tight. The last ten minutes had the crowd on tenter hooks with Clevedon missing two kickable penalties and Paignton pressing on the Clevedon line right on the final whistle. A welcome four points.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at away to Sidmouth. The 2nd XV are at home to Bath Old Edwardians and the 3rd XV are away to Midsomer Norton. All kick offs are at 14:30.

Captain Tom Thie scores this week...

Ivybridge desperate to stave off relegation and Clevedon also looking for security, both gave their all and possibly a draw was a fair result. Clevedon dominated the early phases and took an early lead through winger Dave burns who rounded off a good handling move. Clevedon, it seemed, started too well and took their foot off the pedal. This let the hosts in for a try with a catch and drive at the lineout.

When Clevedon moved the ball wide they looked dangerous. They increased their lead with a well taken try by Tom Thie. Ivybridge reduced the deficit with a penalty.

Clevedon scored their third try after good work by Dave Burns who scored his second try. Mike Taylor converted. Right on the stroke of half time Ivybridge scored a converted try, to make the score 17 -15 in Clevedon's favour.

Soon after the restart Ivybridge took the lead with a try. Clevedon played at a low ebb and provided slow ball for the backs. They tried to attack around the fringes.T his did not work and Clevedon played to the strength of the hosts by keeping it tight. Clevedon's saving grace was a long range penalty by Taylor to rescue a draw.

There were more honours for Clevedon Rugb Club when Ollie Jones and Tom Wain were picked to play for Somerset U20. They were playing against Cornwall at Camborne on Sunday. The whole club wishes them well.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to third placed Old Redclifians. The 2nd XV are away to Walcot III and the 3rd XV don't have a game. Both kick offs are at 14:30.

Dauncey adds one more to the front row try count...

Clevedon went into this game searching for more points, but without the services of Vailes, Shopland and O'Rourke. The players who came did themselves justice and helped Clevedon to an emphatic victory.

Clevedon started on the offensive and took an early lead through the boot of Mike Taylor with a penalty. Cullompton soon hit back with a penalty of their own and against the run of play Cullompton kicked a second penalty to take the lead.

Clevedon's forwards were in rampant mood and from some good foraging, Tony Dauncey scored a try, which Taylor converted. Taylor increased the lead with a penalty.

Clevedon's forwards again applied pressure for Dave Rawle, the 2nd xv captain, to score a try. Again Taylor converted. Before half time a clever move saw Dean Ashfield go over for a try, which Taylor converted. A good first half with

Captain Thie looking to pass!...

Clevedon playing with confidence and Cullompton sticking to their task, but always seemed to be under pressure.

The second half saw Clevedon fighting hard for the bonus point try. Both defences were on top with Cullompton coming more into the game. Clevedon had opportunities to get the vital try, but wrong options decided their fate. The only score of the half was a Taylor penalty. Cullompton hammered the Clevedon line in the last quarter, but the Clevedon defence held firm. Hooker Gary Carpenter had an outstanding game as did the rest of the pack. Joe Williams at scrum half dogged it and the two young wingers, Dave Burns and James O'Connor fitted in well to the well oiled Machine.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV do not have a game, but the 2nd XV are at home to Winscombe and the Colts are alos at home. Both kick offs are at 14:30.

Vivian ups his try count...

This was an important game for Clevedon who are desperate for points.

Clevedon did the double over their opponents in a thrilling game. Clevedon welcomed back kicker Mike taylor who put his seal on the game. Clevedon took the lead with a penalty by taylor.

Clevedon's backs ran well early on but were unable to score. Camborne peppered the Clevedon line at the end of the half, but Clevedon's defence held firm due to some heroic defending by the forwards. Clevedon lead 3-0 at the break.

The second half gave Clevedon the advantage of the cold wind at their backs. Mike Taylor increased their lead with a second penalty.

There were sterling performances from scrum half Ashley vailes, flanker James Shopland and prop Tony Dauncey. Good pressure by the Clevedon team who chased everything that moved caused a kick to be charged down allowing James Shopland to score a try.Taylor converted from the touchline. Clevedon kept up the pressure and Taylor kicked his third penalty. Camborne looked good with breakaways, but Clevedon's tackling was immense. Again pressure from the forwards saw Dave Vivian score a try, which Taylor converted.

Clevedon's lineout worked well with Chase nd Russell well to the fore. Clevedon's backs did the business in attack as well as defence with Tom O'Rourke and Dean AShfield excelling. A great performance with confidence for the future.

Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to Cullompton. Kick off is at 14:30 with a Vice Presidents buffet preceding it at 13:30.

Vailes stretches to score...

This was a classic. Big hits, dour defending, attacking rugby and the lead changing hands. The game was played at Clevedon School, on a dry pitch that was ideal for this game. Brixham second in the league and Clevedon struggling for points.

Brixham had the chance to take an early lead, but missed an easy penalty. Clevedon then had the same opportunity and obliged in the same way. Clevedon playing up the slope and into a breeze did edge ahead with a penalty by Simon Johns. Clevedon failed to find touch from a penalty and Brixham counter attacked and scored a converted try. Brixham then had two players yellow carded and during the ten minutes Clevedon failed to score against 13 men. Brixham increased their lead with a penalty. Clevedon's kicking out of defence was aimless and played into the hands of a counter attacking side. Clevedon had opportunities to score, but Brixham's defence was well marshalled. Clevedon had a player yellow carded and from the resulting offence Brixham kicked a penalty to lead 13-3 at half time.

The second half started with Clevedon on the rampage with the elements at their backs. Brixham had another yellow card and from a scrum Clevedon completely demolished the Brixham pack and were awarded a penalty try. Johns converted. It was now game on.

Brixham converted yet another penalty. It was now Clevedon's turn for a yellow card. Constant pressure on the bBixham line eventually rewarded the Clevedon side with a try by Ashley Vailes. Johns converted for Clevedon to take the lead. There was still drama to come. In injury time Brixham regained the lead with yet another penalty. With the last play of the game Clevedon were awarded a penalty, but unfortunately it drifted wide. A thrilling end to a good competitve game.

Next week, Clevedon are away to Chosen Hill FP. The coach leaves at 11:30 and kick off is at 14:30.

Debutant James O'Connor takes his try well...

This local derby was riddled with mistakes from both sides. Clevedon had a kick charged down early on and from the resulting play conceded a penalty, which Avonmouth converted to take the lead. Clevedon had ample ball, but did not have a play maker to break down the hosts defence. Clevedon had a chance to draw level, but hit the post from in front. They played the price of not having a recognised kicker in the side. Clevedon had the territorial advantage, but could not turn possession into points. Clevedon scrummaged well, but again could not capitalise on this. Before the break Clevedon had a player yellow carded.

The second half was much of the same. Both sides squandered chances, but a swift handling movement resulted in debutant James O'Connor scoring a try wide out. The conversion attempt from the touch line just went wide. Clevedon then received a second yellow card, although Avonmouth gave away a string of penalties, but were not carded. Avonmouth took the lead with a try from a catch and drive. This was converted. Clevedon hammered away at the Avonmouth line, but were unable to score and a late penalty denied Clevedon a losing bonus point.

Dave Vivian had an outstanding game in the pack, while some of the first time tackling by the Clevedon backs was excellent. Yet it was another game that Clevedon let slip by.

Next week, Clevedon are at home to Brixham. The kick off is at 14:30.

Chase gets the first try of 2011...

This Somerset Cup match was a hard fought battle with both sides showing that they had not played for three weeks. Harlequins started the better and took an early lead with a penalty. Clevedon were still not awake when the visitors increased their lead with a second penalty. The Quins played to their strength, which was their pack and the knowledgeable home supporters wondered why Clevedon kept going back inside instead of playing their normal brand of rugby, spreading the ball.

Good forward driving resulted in Ben Chase going over for a try. Before the break Harlequins kicked a third penalty to lead 9-5 at half time.

After a few harsh words at half time, Clevedon settled into their normal pattern of play and as a result Chris Cates scored an excellent try after a superb handling movement. The introduction of Dean Ashfield at centre made a great impact on the game. Mike Taylor converted the try. Clevedon for the first time were now in the lead. Quins kept hammering away but good defensive work kept them at bay. Both sides rang the changes, but Clevedon could not take their foot off the pedal. They finally made sure of the result, when good forward play allowed Tom Thie to put Chris Cates in for his second try, which Taylor converted.

Next week, Clevedon are away to Avonmouth Old Boys. The kick off is at 14:30.

Vailes scores the opener...

On a heavy pitch both sides tried to play running rugby. Wadebridge were in the driving seat early on, but Clevedon kept them at bay. A slick handling movement resulted in a try for the hosts. Clevedon hit back with a fine move for Ashley Vailes to score a try under the posts. Mike Taylor converted. Clevedon held on to this slim lead right until halftime when Wadebridge kicked a penalty to lead 8-7. Clevedon's forwards battled hard with Matt honour well to the fore.

The second half saw the hosts up their game and increase their lead with a well worked converted try. Clevedon started to struggle in the scrums against a heavier pack. Wadebridge kicked a penalty and further increased their lead when a promising attack by Clevedon broke down and on the counter attack Wadebridge scored a try in the corner. Wadebridge now went all out for a bonus point but the Clevedon defence held firm. In fact the closing stages were dominated by Clevedon who had a perfectly good try disallowed after a forward trundle. Clevedon did manage to get their second try when Harvey Russell again Clevedon's man of the match went over from a five metre scrum. A chance lost of at least getting a losing bonus point.

Next week, Clevedon are at home to Walcot. The kick off is at 14:30 preceded by a Vice President's luncheon at 13:30.

MOTM Russell scores Clevedon's only try...

This was an eventful day on and off the field. The faithful three supporters stood in the freezing cold wind and watched Clevedon play well for the first half. St Ives big strong pack dominated the early stages and took the lead with a try after a good forward drive. Clevedon hit back with a penalty by Steve Johnson. St Ives increased their lead with a catch and drive at the lineout with a try wide out. Clevedon hit back with a second Johnson penalty. By now Clevedon had settled into their rhythm and from a scrum number eight Harvey Russell flashed over on the blindside for a try for Clevedon to take the lead 10-11. Right on half time Clevedon knocked the ball on on their own line and following the scrum scored a converted try to lead 17-11 at the break.

The second half showed St.Ives on the rampage and they increased their lead with three converted tries in rapid succession. It did not help Clevedon's cause having lost thier captain to hospital and the influential flanker Wayne Wheeler to the physio's bench. St.Ives kicked a penalty and finished off with a converted try. Clevedon battled to the end, but they have to sort out the lineout which again was a weakness when in an attacking position and not miss so many first up tackles. All was not over despite the final whistle. The coach windscreen wipers failed to work, so Clevedon had to have a few drinks waiting for a replacement coach, but did arrive home safely at 10.45pm.

Next week, Clevedon are at home to Old Redcliffians kick off at 14:30.

Just one of the many scrums...

This was a dour game of rugby played in wet heavy conditions. Sidmouth started strongly and were intent on running the ball on every occasion. It was Clevedon who should have taken an early lead but a simple penalty attempt sailed wide. On a rare visit to the Clevedon half Sidmouth took the lead with a try from open play, which was converted. Clevedon then missed a second penalty attempt again in a kickable position. Clevedon did finally get on the scoreboard with an interception try by Simon Johns, converted by Mike Taylor. Clevedon's lineout was a problem winning good ball in midfield through Harvry Russell and Wayne Wheeler, but losing the vital linesout near the Sidmouth line on five occasions. Half time 7-7.

The second half saw both sides still intent on open rugby, but many mistakes and handling errors were frequent. The referee did well to keep on top of the game, which now became error strewn. Clevedon had a purple patch for 20 minutes in which Chris Cates scored a superb try in the corner after a swift handling movement. Sidmouth never gave up and were still in the game right up to the final whistle. Clevedon's defence was good and well marshalled by Tom Thie. Clevedon scrummaged well with Harvey Russell again outstanding.

Next week, Clevedon are away to St. Ives. The coach leaves at 09:00 for a 14:30 kick off.

Paignton 30 Clevedon 22

This was the game that got away.

Clevedon started well and were in the driving seat for the whole of the first half, playing good running rugby. Clevedon took the lead through a Steve Johnson penalty. Paignton replied in kind. A fine break by fly half Tom Thie had Wayne Wheeler on his shoulder to score a try under the posts. Johnson converted. Paignton hit back with a penalty. Before the break Tony Dauncey drove over for a try, which Johnson converted. Clevedon's lineout worked well with plenty of variation. Clevedon lead 17 -6 at half time.

The second half started with Clevedon still in control and a good forward drive saw Ryan Smith go over for a try.

Then things started to go wrong for Clevedon. In fact they got blown away by a Paignton side who started to run the ball at Clevedon and got into their faces. From a scrum, a blind side move saw them sneak over for a try. This was followed by a slick handling movement which resulted in a try. A catch and drive at the lineout brought another try, which was converted that now put Paignton 23-22 in the lead.

In a desperate last move to win the game a dropped pass in an attacking position by Clevedon was fly hacked down the field resulting in a converted try for the hosts. After this the final whistle went and Clevedon were left to rue their second half performance.

Next week, Clevedon are at home to Sidmouth, kick off is at 14:30.

Clevedon 35 Ivybridge 6

...

This was a game full of incidents with both sides receiving a red card and numerous yellows.

Clevedon started well and took the lead through two Mike Taylor penalties. Ivybridge replied with a penalty. Clevedon still kicked away possession when in a try scoring position. Ivybridge then had two players sin binned. During the following ten minutes Clevedon failed to score against 13 men.

A quickly taken tap penalty saw Tom O'Rourke go over for a fine individual try. Clevedon then received a yellow card. Ivybridge kicked a second penalty before having a player red carded. A catch and drive at the lineout saw Tony Dauncey buuldoze his way over for try, which Taylor converted. Clevedon lead 18 -6 at half time.

The second half started with Clevedon receiving a red card.

During this period Ivybridge started to dominate the game and it was only good defence that kept them at bay. The discipline on both sides was poor and the visitors had yet another yellow card.

A quick tap penalty and good vision by Steve Johnson, who kicked for the corner saw Joe Wiliiams gather and score a try.

Clevedon now with their tails up and kept ball in hand instead of kicking and a good bout of passing saw Owen Biggins score in the corner. This was converted by Mike Taylor.

Ivybridge, who were gallant to the end, were out on their feet when O'Rourke went over for his second try. A casual performance that got better and again an outstanding performance from Dave Vivian at loose head prop.

Clevedon's next game is on Tuesday 2nd November at the Portway Centre against Avonmouth Old Boys in the Combination Cup. Kick off is at 19:30.

Clevedon next league game is away to Paignton on the 13th November. Kick off is at 14:30 and the coach will leave in time to get there at 13:00.

Cullompton 0 Clevedon 0

23rd October 2010
By Mike Thomas

Team: M.Lowis, J.Barzotelli, M.Taylor, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivyan, B.Kemp, T.Dauncey, O.Jones, R.Smith, H.Russell, O.Biggins, D.Rawle. Replacements: W.Thomas, M.Honor, D.Burns.

New blue boots for Rawle...

At this high level of rugby, the highest in the local area, how often do you see a 0-0 game?

The game was plagued with very wet and inclement weather, which provided a wet and greasy ball. Despite all this, both sides tried to play running rugby. Players have to be given credit for trying to entertain a large crowd.

Clevedon played up the slope first half and had the territorial advantage, but could not score mainly due to a stout home defence. Cullompton had a few penalty kicks at goal, which were all unsuccessful. The lineout became a bit of a lottery with the wet ball, but despite this, Cullompton had the edge in this department. Clevedon were glad to turn around all square at half time.

No pot of gold for Clevedon...

The second half showed Clevedon attacking from the first whistle. Cullompton responded with like. Clevedon were now putting the pressure on in the scrums and had the hosts all over the place. Clevedon could not take full advantage of this near the home line because Cullompton's defence was rock solid. Clevedon got over the try line, but the referee ajudged the player was held up. The Clevedon eight fought magnificently and the backs tackled liked heroes.

The last five minutes had both sides supporters on edge with first Clevedon missing a kickable penalty. To the horror of the home supporters, Cullompton's normally reliable kicker missed from in front of the posts. Possibly a fair result, but Clevedon may think this was one that got away.

Next week's game at home to Ivybridge. Kick off is at 15:00.

Camborne 27 Clevedon 33

16th October 2010
By Mike Thomas

Team: S.Johnson, J.Barzotelli, M.Taylor, T.O'Rourke, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivyan, B.Kemp, G.Carpenter, O.Jones, T.Dauncey, R.Smith, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: C.Williams, B.Martin, D.Burns.

Bradders opens the scoring...

It is not very often a team comes out of Cornwall with a win, but this was a game which will be remembered for a long time.

Clevedon with a patched up pack of forwards started brightly and took an early lead with a try by hooker Bradley Kemp from a catch and drive at the lineout. Camborne replied with a penalty.

A clever midfield move saw fly half Tom The put Owen Biggins in for a try, which was converted by Steve Johnson. This set back seemed to stir Camborne into life and they hit back with a converted try from a rolling maul. This was quickly followed by a clever move by the Camborne backs resulting in a converted try to take the lead.

Before the break Clevedon regained the lead with a second Biggins try, which Johnson converted for Clevedon to lead 19 -17.

This was a game where both sides were intent on running the ball and had the crowd on their feet with excitement. A massive penalty by the Camborne fly half saw Camborne regain the lead. The game then saw both sides miss opportunities and with the game coming to a close the best was yet to come.

Cap'n Thie leads them out...

The Camborne fly half scored a superb individual try which he converted, for Camborne to lead 27-19. Kim Hazeldine the Clevedon coach then made an inspired replacement by bringing on Chris Williams at the age of 44 to add his experience. This obviously worked because the Clevedon backs saw Tom O'Rourke put young Mike Taylor in for a try under the posts. Johnson converted.

The score now was 27-26 to Camborne. Deep in injury time a clearance by Camborne was fielded on the half way line .Chris Cates was given the ball and his pace got him over in the corner for Johnson to add the conversion.

What a finish to a spectacular game. The whole Clevedon team played well with Joe Williams and Tom O'Rourke outstanding.

Next week's game is away to Cullompton and the coach leaves at 11:30. Kick off is at 15:00.

Clevedon 31 Chosen Hill 9

Vivyan munches three to score...

In front of a large crowd Clevedon played their best rugby of the season. They started off brightly and soon got on the scoreboard with a penalty from Mike Taylor. Chosen Hill hit back with three penalties to take the lead. Clevedon replied with a second penalty by Taylor.

Clevedon were in the driving seat and it took a fine break by Tom Thie, who was pulled down short, for Owen Biggins to pick up and score a try under the posts and for Taylor to convert.

Taylor slots another one...

Clevedon still had the failing to kick the ball away in the red area. Clevedon played some of their best rugby when they were down to 14 men due to a yellow card. On the stroke of half time a superb handling movement saw Chris Cates go over in the corner for a try. Clevedon led 18-9 at the break.

There were outstanding performances from Ollie Jones and Dave Vivian in the front five and the back row of Wayne Wheeler, Harvey Russell and Owen Biggins worked well as a unit. The backs, when they ran the ball instead of kicking it, looked a class act. Mike Taylor increased the lead with a penalty.

This was followed by a good driving maul enabling Dave Vivian to score a try. Chosen Hill kept going and pressured the Clevedon line for periods but the Clevedon defence held firm. With the last move of the game a clever kick ahead was followed up and good thinking by Tom Thie put Biggins in for his second try to help Clevedon secure a bonus point. A good team performance.

Next week's game is away to Camborne and the coach leaves at 09:00. Kick off is at 15:00.

Brixham 52 Clevedon 15

2nd October 2010
By Mike Thomas

Team: W.Carpenter, D.Poole, S.Johns, M.Taylor, J.Barzotelli, T.Thie(c), J.Williams, D.Vivyan, M.Honor, G.Carpenter, R.Smith, B.Chase, W.Thomas, O.Biggins, H.Russell. Replacements: O.Jones, A.Glen, D.Burns.

Only one man to beat...

Clevedon ventured into Devon with a young side including eight colts from the last two seasons. This mainly due to the fact that some senior players were unavailable to travel.

Clevedon had the worst possible start with a player being yellow carded after 30 seconds. Brixham took the lead with a penalty, which young Will Carpenter equalised with the same.

The bigger Brixham pack scored a try from a rolling maul. This being converted. Brixham increased their lead with another penalty .A clever cross kick saw Brixham gather and score in the corner. Clevedon seemed to be giving away too many penalties and two more were converted. In between these Clevedon had the same player yellowed carded again for a tecnical offence. This was then turned into a red card.

Clevedon's some what suspect defence leaked a converted try, but on the stroke of half time Owen Biggins pounced on a defensive error to score a try, which Carpenter converted. Clevedon were 31-10 down at the break.

... and Joe Williams scores his try

Clevedon's valiant youngsters never gave up and were rewarded early in the second half with a superb try, started and finished by Joe Williams. Clevedon were in the game in the second half and were unlucky not to add to their score.

They then lost the use of stalwarts Ben Chase and Owen Biggins due to injury. Clevedon battled well, but in the final ten minutes mainly due to missed tackles and the fact that fourteen men were out on their feet, conceded three converted tries.

The youngsters needed praise for making their 1st xv debuts and will be all the better for the experience.

Next week's game is at home to Chosen Hill FP and the kick off is at 15:00.

Chucky at high altitude...

On a perfectly sunny the large crowd were treated to a good game of running rugby. Clevedon started brightly and took an early lead with a Steve Johnson penalty. Avonmouth hit back with a converted try after a missed tackle in midfield. A counter attack started by Mike Lowis saw Chris Cates grubber kick through for Lowis to make the touch down. Johnson converted. Clevedon were now playing with their tails up and turn over ball enabled Clevedon to spread the ball away for Joe Williams to score in the corner. Before the break Mike Lowis dropped a goal for Clevedon to lead 18-7.

Joe Williams nails his man...

The old saying "it was a game of two halves" was certainly true. Simon Johns was pulled down short of the line. This was a let off for Avonmouth and changed the whole game. A good handling movement saw Avonmouth reduce the deficit with a converted try. Clevedon then lost Johnson with an ankle injury.

Avonmouth now started to control the game through their fly half who kicked well and brought his backs into play and their midfield then dominated the game. Another swift handling movement resulted in Avonmouth's third converted try. Clevedon now had gone off the boil and lost their shape. From a scrum near the Clevedon line Avonmouth's scrum half nipped over for a try and in the final minutes a clever kick to the corner and a lucky bounce saw Avonmouth get their fifth try which was converted.

A disappointing second half for Clevedon who now have to pick themselves up for next week's trip to Brixham.

Coach leaves at 11:00 and the kick off is at 15:00

Joe Williams scores Clevedon's first try...

This was a game where both sides were desperate for points. Clevedon started brightly and took an early lead through a penalty by Steve Johnson. Clevedon applied all the early pressure and increased their lead when a slick handling movement ended with Joe Williams scoring for Johnson to add the conversion.

Clevedon were dominant in all phases of the game and became too casual in their approach and therefore squandered many chances and lost their shape. Before the interval Walcot, who defended well, kicked a penalty.

Debutant Adam Glen eyes up the opposition...

The second half saw Clevedon with the slope advantage. Soon they got on the scoreboard with a try by Simon Johns after a good rolling maul by the forwards. Johnson added the conversion.

Clevedon now were rampant with Ben Chase and Harvey Russell dominating the lines out. A counter attack by Mike Lowis carried on by Chris Cates saw Simon Johns get his second try. Johnson again converting. Both sides had their scrum halves sin binned and during this period Mike Lowis scored an individual try, which Mike Taylor converted.

A promising performance with a hard season ahead.

Captain Tommy Thie celebrates Clevedon's first win...

This was a good game of running rugby from the first whistle to the last. Wadebridge opened brightly and it was Clevedon who had their backs to the wall. Clevedon took the lead through a Steve Johnson penalty. Wadebridge came back at Clevedon, but the home defence was rock solid. Steve Johnson increased Clevedon's lead with his second penalty. Clevedon were now getting into their stride and tested the visitors defence, which also proved to be solid.

The only try of the game came after Wadebridge had kicked a penalty who dropped the ball and a fly kick up field resulted in winger Grant Cherrington winning the race for the touchdown. Before the break Johnson kicked his third penalty.

Johns charges on...

The second half produced some entertaining rugby with both sides running the ball. Both defences were the main feature of the game.At times both sides camped on their opponents line.Wadebridge kicked a penalty to make it a nervous last ten minutes, but Clevedon held firm.Harvey Russell dominated the lineout and Simon Johns and Tom O'Rourk were a formidable pairing in the centres.

Next week, Clevedon are away to Walcot. The kick off is at 15:00 and the coach leaves at 12 noon.

Chippenham 58 Clevedon 15

Team: D.Poole, A.Ayres, S.Johns, M.Harris, C.Cates, T.Thie(c), S.Johnson, D.Vivian, M.Honor, A.Dauncey, R.Smith, B.Chase, N.Hudson, H.Russell, J.Williams. Replacements: G.Carpenter,D.Burns, O.Jones

On this performance this could be a long hard season.

Clevedon sent a patched up team to play last season's relegated National league side. Chippenham attacked from the first whistle and gave Clevedon a wake up call.

Cruncher Crane gets a standing ovation on his return to Chippenham...

Clevedon conceded too many penalties early on. Chippenham took the lead through a penalty. This was followed by four tries three conversions and a penalty by half time. Clevedon missed two kickable penalties just before the break.

The pluses for Clevedon were the scrum, which was solid all game and the lineout was steady.

The second half was the same with Chippenham scoring four more tries and converting three. The last twenty minutes saw Clevedon run the ball instead of kicking it and scored three tries by Harvey Russell, Chris Cates and Ryan Smith. Hopefully, Clevedon will do better next week

Next week, Clevedon are at home to newly promoted Wadebridge Camels. The kick off is at 15:00.
