President Michael Thomas Reports:
Basingstoke 57   Clevedon 5

4th March 2006

<<<< Back to 1st XV fixtures

Despite this defeat, a weakened Clevedon side gave a spirited display. With Tom O'Rourke, Steve Johnson and Dan Filby unavailable in the back division, Clevedon were always going to struggle behind. Basingstoke took an early lead with two converted tries, while Clevedon were still introducing themselves.

AC:Dave Rawle takes a breather after five minutes! Team: A.Freeman, C.Cates, T.Thie, S.Johns, B. Ford, D.Hawkes, A.Vailes, B.Littleton, J.Morgan, N.Tucker(c), W.McMillan, J.Pearce, N.Bridle, S.Barnes, D.Rawle. Reps: T.Lisney, B.Stone

Clevedon playing up the slope were always under pressure and went further behind to a penalty. Fly Half Dan Hawkes touchline kicking was quality and his combination with Ashley Vailes at scrum half was good. Basingstoke increased their lead with a pick and drive try by their forwards. This was converted. To add to Clevedon's woes some unusual refereeing decisions did not help them. Before the break a rolling maul resulted in converted try for Basingstoke to lead 31-0 at half time.

Despite this Clevedon's lineout was good with McMillan and Pearce leaping like salmons. Their scrums were solid and made stronger with the introduction of Ben Stone. Clevedon had ample possession, but lacked penetration in midfield. A blindside break and chip ahead led to a converted try against the run of play and this move was repeated with the same result for Basingstoke. Weak midfield tackling gifted yet another try. Then Clevedon were rewarded for their efforts with a fine individual try by the ever-improving Simon Johns. Right at the death, turn over ball presented a final converted try for Basingstoke.
