This game was played in ice-cold conditions with a biting wind. The early exchanges were even with both sides intent on running the ball. Clevedon playing with the strong wind at their backs did not kick for position and therefore lost the advantage of the wind. Clevedon as usual tackled well, especially in midfield. A dropped ball by Clevedon's midfield enabled Chippenham to counter attack and score a converted try. Clevedon still did not use the wind advantage from the regular supply of ball provided by the forwards.
A Clevedon attack broke down in the Chippenham half and a slick handling movement by Chippenham produced another converted try. Chippenham led 14-0 at the break.
The second half started disastrously for Clevedon with Kiwi Wayne McMillan being taken to hospital with a facial injury and Captain Tucker leaving the field. This did not help their cause. The vastly improved Simon Johns on the wing was brought down practically on the line, but the hosts line stayed intact. Clevedon's forwards dominated the scrums with James Morgan taking five strikes against the head. Both sides lineout worked well. As the heavier Chippenham pack got on top in the mauls they scored two tries from rolling mauls, one being converted. Clevedon's backs had ample ball, but for the second week running were unable to use the possession to score. There were too many casual, flimsy passes instead of hard direct positive running. Right at the end Chippenham scored a try down the blindside to clinch a convincing win.
Next week the 1st XV have no game, but the seconds are away to Yatton, and the thirds at home, kick-off 13:00
