In very wet and cold conditions, Clevedon made history by doing the double over a Cornish side in saeson in league rugby. Their performance was awesome. The task set them was difficult because Penryn were fighting to stave off relegation.
Penryn took an early lead with a well executed try after five minutes. Clevedon playing down the slope soon got back into the action and Tom Thie deputising at fullback for Steve Johnson, had a dream game. His counter attacking was first class. One of his runs got Clevedon into an attacking position from which Dan Hawkes kicked a penalty.
Both sides attempted to play running rugby and therefore mistakes were made. Both sides lineout play was good with James Shopland prominent. Pressure on a Penryn scrum near their own line, caused slow ball and Dan Filby charged the kick down to score a try in the corner. Filby having one of his better games, gave young Hawkes a perfect service despite the weather. The defences on both sides was superb and big hits were the order of the day.
The second half seemed to be a daunting affair to the Clevedon supporters with their team playing up the slope and into the elements. They need not have worried because the forwards, well led by Neil Tucker and John Pearce were well up to the challenge. The driving and support play was first class. Ben Stone and Piers Hopkins excelled in loose play. The backs had to defend for fully 40 minutes plus a great deal of injury time and the centre partnership of Tom O'Rourke and Ashley Vailes was outstanding in defence. Chris Cates and Simon Johns held their nerve on many one to one confrontations. As normal James Morgan's pitching into the lineout was at the top level. A valuable two points against the odds.
Clevedon are away to Keynsham on Saturday for the first round of the Somerset Cup, kick off 14:00.
