Playing on a narrow school pitch did not help Clevedon's style of play. Abbey, with a bigger pack of forwards on this pitch were in their element. The early stages were even with both defences on top. Abbey broke the stalemate when they scored a converted try from a good roling maul. Clevedon soon hit back through two of their more influential players combining to score a superb try. James Shopland started the move, fed Steve Johnson who entered the line like a knife through butter, then again linked up with Shopland who scored under the posts. Dan Hawkes converted. The Clevedon scrum was under pressure but this did not prevent Tom Excell at scrum half from having a great game. At half time the scores were level.
The second half showed Clevedon playing some very good rugby. The backs moved the ball well but their inexperience could not break the Abbey defence. They had wave after wave of attacks but needed an old head to see them over the line. In one such attack the final pass was intercepted on the Abbey line and resulted in a try from 100 metres out. This was converted to give Abbey the lead against the run of play. On four occasions Clevedon were denied tries in the top corner, through either a bad pass or wrong option. Steve Johnson kept Clevedon's hopes alive with a drop goal. This was followed by a Hawkes penalty. Clevedon now threw everything at Abbey but they were denied the victory they should have got.
Next week, Clevedon are away to Gloucester Spartans, kick off 14:30. Coach leaves at 11:30. |
