Clevedon were put under pressure early on, but soon settled down and good ball won at the lineout produced an excellent handling movement by the backs, which resulted in a kick ahead for Steve Johnson to score a try in the corner. Again good lineout ball saw Tom O'Rourke make a fine break to enable James Shopland to score a try to put Clevedon 12-0 up. Clevedon on the attack gave away a penalty near the Cheltenham line, a quick tapped penalty resulted in Cheltenham scoring a try from a 90 yard movement. Before the break Dan Hawkes kicked a penalty for Clevedon to lead 15-5 at half time
Clevedon's young side created more chances but failed to score. Tom Excell, Steve Barnes and Wayne McMillan were well to the fore. Pressure on the Cheltenham scrum caused chaos and Tom O'Rourke poached a fine individual try. Hawkes converted. Hawkes increased the Clevedon lead with a penalty to lead 25-5.
Clevedon went off the boil and lost their concentration and let Cheltenham into the game with two quick tries. With Captain Neil Tucker well in control, he steadied the boat for Clevedon to hold on to a well earned victory.
Next week, Clevedon are at home to Chippenham in a replay of their earlier league encounter, which ended with uncontested scrums. Kick Off 14:30. |
