This was a gutsy, gritty performance and helped to get Clevedon off the bottom of the table. Clevedon had the dream start when Dan Hawkes kicked a penalty. Clevedon kicked away too much possession, while Oxford passed and kept the ball. A tremendous rolling maul by Clevedon forced Oxford to concede a penalty, which Hawkes converted. The wet conditions caused the game to become scrappy. A well taken penalty resulted in Steve Johnson scoring a try in the corner. Clevedon led 11-0 at the break.
Clevedon should have increased their lead on the restart but missed an easy penalty. The Clevedon forwards gave a good account of themselves with James Morgan taking four strikes against the head. The lineout worked well with McMillan and Shopland shining. The Clevedon backs defended well and moved the ball well at times. Wayne McMillan had an outstanding game in the loose. To clinch victory, Hawkes kicked his third penalty. With time running out Oxford ran everything but the Clevedon defence held firm.
The next league game is at home to Maidenhead on the 15th October, kick off 15:00.
