In oppressive heat both teams tried to play rugby from the first whistle. St. Ives had the better of the first quarter with their forwards dominating the set piece. St. Ives took the lead with two well struck penalties and Clevedon hit back with a penalty by Dan Hawkes. A quickly taken lineout, after a spectator had touch the ball, caught Clevedon off guard and resulted in a try for the visitors.
Clevedon had the better of the second quarter and Dan hawkes kicked three more penalties to give Clevedon a 12-11 lead.
Clevedon started the second half with a bang. A good handling movement ended with James Shopland scoring a try in the corner. Unusually, Clevedon's lineout was not functioning and this denied the backs the possession they badly needed. St. Ives hit back with a converted try and a penalty. This now put Clevedon under pressure, but a penalty by Hawkes gave them a lifeline. Clevedon could have won the game with the last kick of the match, but unfortunately the attempt went wide.
Next week (Saturday, 10th September 2005, KO 15:00) Clevedon are away to Weston-Super-Mare.
