Clevedon went into this Bristol Combination Cup quarter final game full of confidence from the previous weeks game, Wells however didn't play to the script and the first ten minutes saw Chapman, Cooper and Carpenter tackling there hearts out to keep the visitors at bay. It was turnover ball from another huge Cooper tackle that let Carpenter free Haliborton for a length of the pitch try totally against the run of play. This spurred Clevedon on and Marshall, Cragg and Catt really put the visiting forwards under the cosh, this allowed the Carpenter and Haines combination to release the dangerous Gadd and Haliborton time and time again. It was one of these breaks, which led to Catt crashing through for the second try on half an hour. Wells then came close to scoring but a magnificent cover tackle from fit again Burns not only stopped a certain try but also won Clevedon a penalty. Half time saw Daley replaced by Jones fresh from warm weather training in Spain, and it did not take him long to make an impression. Solid scrummaging on the Wells ball led to Captain Nicholls again catching the opposing scrum half with the ball, allowing the forwards to turn this over and the following attack saw Taylor put Jones over, for Clevedon to go 19-0 up. To even things up Clevedon decided to play a man short, coaches Dauncey and Brooks had brought Cragg off to be replaced by Chesher, unfortunately Chesher had not finished his daisy chain and refused to take the pitch until he had finished, leaving Clevedon a man down for 5 minutes. Once even numbers were restored it was a break by replacement Chromey, which led to a scrum ten yards out from which Shepperd strolled over on the 57th attempt. Another great performance for this ever improving team, who were well led by Captain Dave Nicholls and Man of the Match Mike Cooper. Next week it's Cheddar away without county star Haliborton. Roll on the Semi Finals. |
