This was a match between the youth of Clevedon, 15 out of the 18 players having come through the youth system, against a Brdigwater side consisting of South Sea Islanders and Southern hemisphere players. Clevedon although always up against it, nevere gave up and battled to the last and should have ben awarded a try in the opening minutes and the final minutes.
Clevedon took the lead through a Mike Lowis penalty and had the better of the first 15 minutes. Bridgwater equalised with a penalty and then scored 5 converted tries before the break through good work, poor ball retention by Clevedon and an intercepted pass to lead 38-3 at the break.
The second half saw Bridgwater increase their lead with a penalty. Clevedon's lineout left a great deal to be desired and the bigger Bridgwater pack dominated the lineout, but Clevedon were more than their equal in the scrums. Bridgwater scored two more converted tries before John Pearce who had a good game, foraged over for a try under the posts, which Lowis converted. Bridgwater ended the game with two more tries, one being converted. To Clevedon's credit they never gave up, and if they had had the rub of the green may have scored more points.
Clevedon's next match is on the 5th March, away to Yatton at North Petherton in the semi final of the Somerset Cup, KO 14:00.
