This was a vital game for Clevedon to win and as a result it was a dour battle with Clevedon missing an early penalty. Both sides were intent on playing running rugby despite the heavy pitch. Simon Johns kicked Clevedon into the lead with a well struck penalty. Both sides made numerous mistakes due to over eagerness and panic situations. A fine break by Tom Thie opened up the Oxford defence, but the final pass was kicked on with the line begging. Clevedon would have been well in the lead at the break if they had a reliable kicker.
The second half saw Oxford really take the game to Clevedon and their ball retention was good, but they could not find a way through the well organised Clevedon defence. Clevedon put in numerous big hits, but at the end of the day neither side made good use of their possession. Oxford gradually broke down Clevedon's defence to score a try in the corner, which was converted. Clevedon did what was required, they hit back straight away. A break by scrum half Dan Filby, saw Simon Johns kick ahead for number eight Anthony Fox to score in the corner. Both sides then had a player yellow carded. Oxford threw everything at Clevedon, but their defence, well marshalled held firm. Oxford put the pressure on Clevedon with a late penalty, but Mike Lowis keeping a cool head kicked sensibly to the corner to take the pressure off. Ben Gilmore, one of the babies of the side, was outstanding as was the remaining players.
Clevedon are at home to North Petherton on Sunday, 13th February 2005, KO 14:00 for a Somerset Cup quarter final clash.
