In the wet, cold conditions Clevedon has the better of the early exchanges and ran the ball at every opportunity, with the handling first clas considering the conditions. Despite how hard they tried they could not break down the Clifton defence. Clevedo struggled in the line out early on and this put pressure on them. Clifton took the lead with a penalty and soon increased it with a dropped goal. Clevedon's scrum was again solid against their bigger opponents. Right on the stroke of half time Clifton scored a try from a catch and drive from a line out.
All of a sudden Clevedon realised that the glory of beating Weston in the Somerset Cup last week was history and now they had to battle against relegation. Dan Filby injured and Ben Gilmore had to leave the field to go on county duty and did not take part in the second half.
The first ten minutes of the second half was fatal for Clevedon with Clifton scoring two tries, one being converted to put them out of sight. Despite hoe hard Clevedon tried, with James Shopland well to the fore, they could not score. A weak clearance kick by Clevedon saw Clifton run the ball back and at the break down they were awarded a penalty try. Before the final whistle, Clifton capped a good display with a final converted try. Ashley Vailes was injured at the end and has to leave the field, as a result of the injury a Clifton player was red carded.
The next league game is at home to Cinderford on the 29th January 2005.
