In very windy conditions Clevedon sought revenge for a narrow defeat at Penryn. Clevedon playing with a howling gale at their backs started slowly and the Cornishmen had the upper hand early on. Penryn took the lead with a dropped goal, but Clevedon soon equalised with a well struck penalty by Captain Mike Lowis. Clevedon's forwards were dominant in the scrums and worked well as an eight in all departments. Clevedon should have increased their lead but two final passes went astray in try scoring positions. Clevedon did eventually take the lead when a strike against the head resulted in a try for Tom O'Rourke. Clevedon turned round at half time with a slender lead and the daunting prospect of having to play into the wind.
Penryn reduced the arrears with a penalty, but good tackling by Clevedon kept their try line intact. Again the dominance in the scrums gave Dave Rawle at number 8 and Ashley Vailes at scrum half the opportunity to keep the ball at close quarters and both to have outstanding games. From one such scrum near the Penryn line, a break by Rawle at the base released the ball to Vailes who gave an inside pass to James Shopland to score a mtach winning try. Mike Lowis who was having a superb game at full back kicked his second penalty and to finish off Dan Filby dropped a goal just before the final whistle. A good team performance, with Richard Hughes, the old head of the pack, winning good ball on the floor.
The next league game is away to Maidenhead on 15th January 2005. Coach leaves the club at 10:15. Supporters £5.00. On Sunday Clevedon are at home to WSm in the Somerset Cup 4th round, KO 14:00.
