Clevedon weathered an early onslaught by the home team, but gradually settled down and began to stamp their authority up front. The forward again put great pressure on in the scrums and the accurate pitching of James Gallagher was rewarded with good lineout work James Shopland and Jeff Durant. Clevedon won a turnover ball and a fine break in midfield by Tim Brooks put Mike Lowis over for a good try. Clevedon secured a 22 metre line out and quick ball to right wing Ashley Vailes saw him flash over in the corner. Cheltenham had up to now not really threatened the Clevedon line due to good defensive work. They got on the scoreboard with a penalty. Before half time a surging run by Joe Harwood resulted in a try in his last game for the club before returning to New Zealand. Steve Johnson converted.
The second half started with Cheltenham throwing everything at Clevedon but the defence held and a fine individual try by Dan Filby, converted by Lowis, put Clevedon safely in the driving seat. Cheltenham reduced the arrears with two penalties. Steve Johnson got injured so Ashley Vailes moved to scrum half and brought a different dimension to the game with his sniping runs. Good forward driving saw John Potts score an excellent try. Mike Lowis kicked a penalty and Cheltenham picked up a loose clearance to score a converted try. Ashley Vailes caught his chip ahead to score wide out. Lowis converted. In the dying minutes, Cheltenham scored a try. An excellent team performance all round.
The next league game is at home to Penryn on 8th January 2005.
