This was a game that Clevedon should've won. In the modern game unfortunately kicks win matches. The the Clevedon faithful they were dismayed that Clevedon missed these easy kicks and therefore lost the game. The early exchanges were even but it was Cheltenham who took the lead with a penalty. Clevedon had the opportunity to take the lead with two early penalties, but it was not to be Clevedon attacked on every occasion, but fast running rugby on a cold wet day may not have been the best option.
Although Clevedon did cretae scoring chances, they unbelievably kicked ball away while within striking distance. A better option would have been to have kept the ball in hand and commit the defence into the tackle. One astute kick through by Mike Lowis playing out of position in the centre, created a try for Steve Johnson.
In what seemed to be an extended first half, saw Cheltenham take the lead with a second penalty.
The second half saw much the same with Clevedon having ample possession to have won the game, but lack of penetration in midfield dir not help their cause. Outstanding forward work by the pack yet again, with Harwood, Hill and Tucker well to the fore, saw their efforts squandered. A mix up in defence presented the visitors with a simple converted try to clinch victory much to the dismay and horror of the home fans.
A double-header weekend is ahead, with Clevedon playing Old Albanians from London One on Saturday in the Intermediate Cup and Walcot on the Sunday in the Somerset Cup. Both kick offs are at 14:00.
