Clevedon ventured into Cornwall leaving behind Owen Biggins and John Potts who have been suspended. Clevedon under the charge of coach Mark Hawkes made a promising start and should have taken the lead after good build up by the forwards, only for the final pass to go astray or the wrong option taken. Clevedon's forwards despite the two missing county players, scrummaged superbly and won their own lineout with ease. Both sides had players yellow carded and at one time Clevedon were down to 13 men. Steve Barsn had a leg injury and was replaced by Anthony Fox. Clevedon's main weakness was missing too many first time tackles. Penryn took the lead with a penalty and increased their lead with an excellent backs try to lead 10-0. They increased their lead to 13-0 with half time approaching. .
Clevedon hit back with a well worked try off the lineout with Joe Harwood bursting through the middle to score under the posts, with Steve Johnson converting. Dan Filby then left the field with a serious hand injury to be replaced by Chris Cates.
The second half showed both sides willing to attack and both defences remained on top. Penryn increased their lead with a third penalty. Clevedon had many chances and good breaks by Lowis and Vailes were not finished off. Penryn from a catch and drive at the lineout scored a suspect try to lead 21-7. Clevedon did not give up and with John Pearce replacing the outstanding Dave Rawle, Clevedon threw everything at Penryn. They were rewarded after a good handling movement and kick ahead, with a try by Tom Thie, which Johnson converted - 21-14. Clevedon hit back straight away and another kick ahead was collected by Chris Cates who scored in the corner. Unfortunately the kick failed.
next week Clevedon are at home to Cheltenham, KO 14:30
