Clevedon's young team performed well after the antics of the week with the disappearance of Kiwi coaches Peter aitken and Aaron Brown. They left the club on Friday with no notification. So coachless Clevedon also with injuries to Ashley Vailes John Pearce and Steve Johnson took the field determined to win and put everything behind them.
In the early stages Clevedon dictated play and were unlucky not to score playing into a strong wind. Eventually, Clevedon did take the lead when pressure on the Oxford scrum caused chaos and Tom O'Rourke took advantage to score a try. Clevedon missed a few kickable penalties but the wind had the final say as far as kicks were concerned. Oxford gradually got into the game and a swift passing movement resulted in a try. Before the interval, while Clevedon were down to 14 men due to a yellow card offence, Oxford to the lead with a converted try to lead 12-5 at the break.
With the wind at their backs Clevedon must have fancied their chances to win, but their aspirations were dented when poor tackling let Oxford in for a try. The Oxford back unit looked handy and Clevedon's defence had to keep alert to keep them out. Clevedon were then faced with another problem when young prop John Potts was red carded for an alleged foul. Clevedon now with their backs to the wall picked up their game and the forwards with Harwood and Tucker well to the fore provided good ball for the backs. Matt Foster chipped ahead for O'Rourke to score his second try. This was followed by a Mike Lowis penalty. Unfortunately, a fly hack up field by Oxford resulted in a try. Clevedon never gave up and good handling saw James Gallagher scamper over in the corner for a try. The final whistle went with Clevedon still attacking.
Next Saturday, Clevedon play Ivel Barbarians in the second round of the Intermediate Cup, kick off 15:00
