This was not the ideal start for new coaches Peter Aitken and Aaron Jones, seeing their team being put to the sword by the might of Bridgwater. All the early pressure came from Bridgwater, but the Clevedon defence remained sound. Bridgwater's line out was good where as Clevedon struggled poorly on size. Clevedon scrums were good against a heavier pack and Bridgwater opened the scoring with a try poached from a Clevedon lineout. Clevedon, although on the defensive had a reasonable supply of ball, but kicked a great deal away badly. Clevedon stuck to their task and just before the break Bridgwater destroyed a scrum to score a converted try. Clevedon were unlucky before the interval not to have scored a try in the corner with a rare attack.
The second half showed Clevedon still having to defend like trojans but conceded a penalty. Bridgwater with their tails up broke down the blindside to score a good try, which was converted. Clevedon never gave up and their heads never went down despite another converted try by Bridgwater. Now 29-0 down Clevedon started to launch a few more attacks and from good forward pressure James Shopland scored atry, which skipper Mike Lowis converted. Bridgwater caught the Clevedon defence napping with a quickly taken tap penalty to score another converted try under the posts. Clevedon hit back with a good try by Tom Thie who, after a good handling move, outfoxed the Bridgwater defence to score wide out. Lowis narrowly failed with the conversion. Bridgwater had the final say with a third try by the fullback.
A bit of work to be done in certain areas, but this young Clevedon side will get better as the season progresses.
Next week, Clevedon 1st XV are at home to Chinnor, kick off 15:00 hrs.
