Both sides fielded under strength sides and it was St. Mary's who dominated the first ten minutes. Clevedon looking slightly nervous, gradually settled down and through good ball retention opened the scoring with a try by Owen Biggins, which skipper Mike Lowis converted.
Clevedon were now in the ascendancy and the backs moved the ball well. A blind side move by Steve Johnson saw Christian Dalera (Bushell that was) score a try in the corner. Clevedon's forwards scrimmaged well, but the lineout left a great deal to be desired. Clevedon led 12-0 at the break.
The second half saw Clevedon reshuffle their team, with Potts retiring early and new boy Rich Hughes replacing him. After this it was St. Mary's who kicked a penalty and a dropped goal to get themselves back in the game.
Clevedon were reduced to 14 men after Biggins was second yellowed for a technical offence and the St Mary's forwards dominated set play. Fortunately, Joe Harwood was immense in loose play and Mike Lowis dropped a goal to put Clevedon well in the lead. Clevedon came good in the last ten minutes and won good lineout ball through James Shopland.
An excellent break by Dan Filby on his debut saw debutant Stephen Barens go over for the clinching try. Steve Johnson converted. A good solid performance by Clevedon, but obviously some improvements can be made.
Next week, Clevedon 1st XV do not have a game. However, Nick Hill leads his second team out at home, kick off 15:00 hrs.
