Clevedon U14 3 v Bristol U14 52
Clevedon started well against an intimidating Bristol side who must have been a stone heavier and six inches taller a man. To the surprise of all watching, the early stages were dominated by the hard working Clevedon pack who recycled the ball again and again as the backs put together 4 phases of good attacking play.
All the early hard work was undone when two missed tackles lead to a brace of quick tries for the powerful Bristol back line. Clevedon were unfortunate to lose the influential Greg Parsons to injury at an early stage and Ben Gadd replaced him as the back line reshuffled.
Clevedon were playing some great stuff now, with the front row of Andy Jones, Adrian Wedlake and Rob Alexander dominating the bigger Bristol pack and second rows Ben Capman and Gary Carpenter providing great support from the engine room.
Unfortunately, more missed tackles meant the hard work went to waste and two more long range tries were conceded before half time.
The second half started well with flankers Cooper and Sheppard harassing the fly half, this was backed up by some great offensive tackling by Haynes, Taylor and Haliburton. The forwards were still competing well even though they lost Jones and Chapman to injury early on. Unfortunately, as the game wore on the Clevedon team began to tire under the huge weight of tackling the bigger opposition, which lead to tries being conceded at regular intervals. Clevedon struck back late on in the game with three points the reward for a period of good forward pressure.
Overall, a good team performance against one of the biggest and better organised sides around. Notable contributions came from Lawrence Moore, Jacob Catt and Lewis Chromie with Joe Robinson, Jack Hinkley, Scott Jones, Ross Cheshire and Billy Mallett all making a valuable contribution as replacements. Rich Haynes also followed last weeks 1 out of 12 kicks, with a 100% performance.
Clevedon U14 62 v Kingswood U14 0
Clevedon took the field desperate to prove a point after losing their previous game, and prove it they did. With a mixture of pace and power the boys gave the lucky Sunday morning crowd a feast of rugby.
From the start it was obvious Clevedon meant business, a good set from the kick off and quick hands led to Mike Taylor putting John Halibourton into space in his own half. The powerful centre was dragged to ground 15 yards out where the supporting forwards steam-rollered the opposition from the ball, and live wire flanker Mike Cooper picked up and crashed over on the blind side for the first try.
That was the start of a purple patch and in the next 10 minutes, the shell shocked opposition conceded tries to powerful No 8 Jacob Catt, the improving Jonny Shephard (2) and new signing Lewis Chromie crashed over out wide. After a 5 minute quite spell good work by the fearsome front row of Andy Jones, Adrian Wedlake and Rob Alexander led to a scrum against the head, and scrum half and Captain Dave Nichols jinked over to finish the first half at 30 - 0 in the lead.
The second half started with Clevedon making wholesale changes. Their attempt to play a more expansive game led to the next three tries being scored by the front five forwards. Andy Jones dragged half the opposition team over the line to make it 35 - 0 and not to be outdone, the mobile Gary Carpenter crashed through several tacklers to touch down.
Good work by Billy Mallet and Ben Chapman allowed Adam Glenn to steam through to score under the posts. Kingswood were not going to lie down though and it took several phases of play before the next Clevedon try. Good pressure from winger Gregg Parsons and full back Benn Gadd, led to a desperate clearance kick by the Kingswood fullback. He was unfortunate to find man of the match Halibourton just inside the ten yard line, and he didn't need a second opportunity to round the defence before crashing through the fullback to score. The last try of the day came from the maestro himself, a break from Halibourton was stopped just short of the line and good support from Rich Haynes led to his try.
Mentions must also go to Lawrence Moore, Joe Robinson, Jack Hinkley and Ross Cheshire who all made good contributions. Johnny Wilkinson will be quaking in his boots at Haynes's return of one out of twelve attempts at goal, but overall a good team performance with lots of room for improvement. There will be tougher games ahead in the remainder of the season.
Clevedon U14 56 v Cleve U14 14
Clevedon approached this game with Cleve looking to bounce back after their defeat against Bristol. The Bristol game had left its mark on the Clevedon team though with Andy Jones still recovering from a dislocated shoulder and Clevedon only naming a squad of 18 of which Ross Cheshire and Jack Hinkley starred for the opposition.
The game started at a good pace with the bigger Cleve pack being run ragged by the handling of the more mobile Clevedon team. An early break from the live wire Mike Cooper led to the outstanding Rich Haines putting Jonny Halibourton in for his first try. Joe Robinson soon joined in on the fun, driving over for his first Clevedon try, after good work from Jonny Sheppard and Jacob Catt. Next to score was fullback Ben Gadd after being put into space by the hard working Greg Parsons, with Haines converting from out wide.
Skipper Dave Nichols finished the first half scoring with his now trade mark "pick from the base, side step the hole back row and dive for the line effort".
Half time saw Rich Haines leave the action to attend the South West choirboy championship and he was replaced by debutante William Carpenter at fly half.
Cleve threatened to get back into the game with two scores early in the second half that were as much due to the home side going to sleep as to their skill. However, these were separated by a Mike Taylor forty-yard sprint after a quickly taken penalty. Johnny Halibourton got the next try, profiting from great aggressive tackling by Ben Chapman and William Carpenter, leading to the ball being spilled over the try line. He then added his third with a simple run in. Benn Gadd added the next two showing great pace to finish good handling by the back line with Carpenter converting both. Johnny Halibourton finished the game with his fourth after a great passage of team play saw the excellent Lewis Chromie put him in space. Rob Alexander and Adrian Wedlake worked tirelessly throughout and man of the match Billy Mallet, covered every inch of grass.
A fantastic performance by a team that is obviously taking a leaf out of their senior teams books. On this performance these boys will be entertaining at the Vale for years to come !!!!
