With an important 1st Xv league match next week Clevedon gave Mike Panoho, Anthony Fox and Steve Johnson a run out to prove their fitness. Also playing was Justin Herewini who returns to New Zealand next week. Yatton fielded a yound inexperienced side who played with spirit and passion. Both sides took a while to settle down, but Clevedon's dominance in the scrums saw number eight Mike Panoho go over for a try, which Neil O'Rourke converted. A blindside switch by Neil O'Rourke put Steve Johnson on a 60 metre run for the line, O'Rourke converted. Clevedon's new signing Devon Delange from South Africa figured prominently in the loose and had a fine game on the blind side. Matt Harris picked up a loose ball, sold a dummy for his first try. Again O'Rourke converted.
A good run and kick ahead by Steve Johnson who caught his own kick put Harris in for a try after good support play. O'Rourke kicked the conversion. Devon Delange whose support play was excellent, drove over for a try in the corner. He again showed vision with a long pass to put Johnson in for a try before half time. Clevedon led 38-0 at the break, with a good performance from the front row of Dunn, Kemp and Britton.
The second half started with Clevedon in a confident and cavalier mood. Yatton must be given credit for not giving up, but they could only tackle so much because Clevedon's slight of hand in passing took the man out of the game. Prop Simon Britton scored a fine try to finish off a good bout of passing. O'Rourke added the points. Again good work by Britton saw replacement James Gallgher score under the posts for O'Rourke to convert.
Yatton were now really under the cosh and a loose clearance saw Robert Cates go over for a corner try. A good run by Anthony Fox down the touchline had ample support inside to put Panoho in for his second try, duly converted by O'Rourke.A deft kick ahead by Cates saw Herewini scoring his last try for the club. A fitting last try was scored by Delange, one of the games outstanding forwards, as Clevedon consolidated their position at the top of the table. |
