Micky Thomas Reports:
Clevedon II 26 Avonmouth II 15

AC: Jamie Bale score the fisrt Clevedon try

This was a creditable performance against a spirited Avonmouth side who never gave an inch. Clevedon keep their unbeaten record and remain top of the 2XV merit table. Avonmouth settled the better and put Clevedon under early pressure. A poor clearance by Clevedon enabled Avonmouth to stay in the home sides 22 and from a maul Avonmouth went over for a converted try.

AC: The ref waits for the scrum to settle down

Clevedon gradually got into the game and the experienced half backs of Neil O'Rourke and Adrian Freeman brought the younger backs into play and they looked an efficient unit. Clevedon were unlucky not to score as the final pass in an exhilarating move was judged forward. Clevedon did equalise through a James Bale try from a maul near the line. Neil O'Rourke converted. Clevedon were having trouble in the scrums against a more experienced Avonmouth front row. The lineouts were poor. Avonmouth took the lead with a penalty. Dave Rawle had a good game driving forward at every occasion making good yardage.

The second half saw Clevedon willing to run the ball on every occasion and the centres Mathhew Bragg and Matthew Harris distributed the ball well. Robert Cates went over for a try in the corner, which Neil O'Rourke converted to put Clevedon 14-10 in front. The lineouts were now working well with James Bale leaping like a salmon. Avonmouth were not out of it and applied constant pressure on the Clevedon line, but Clevedon's defence held firm. Lack of concentration let Avonmouth in for a soft try to regain the lead. Bradley Kemp gathered his troops together and a quick tapped penalty saw Steve Johnson go over for Clevedon again to go into the lead. Avonmouth would not lie down and with ex-Clevedon player Richard Thayer well to the fore, battled hard for the win. It was Clevedon who now tasted victory and after a superb handling movement and a well timed pass by Bragg, Chris Cates went in for the final try. O'Rourke converted for a well deserved victory.

AC: Clevedon apply the squeeze

There were good performances in the pack from veterans Colin Robertson, Dave Nally and Alun Dunn with up and coming youngsters Simon Briton, James Gallagher and James Russell also doing well.

Next Saturday Clevedon 1st XV are away to Reading. The coach will leave the club at 10.45 and there is plenty of room for supporters to join the party.
