This was a hard fought local derby with both sides unable to field a full strength side. Clevedon welcomed the unexpected return of Tim Brooks whose inspirational play lifts the performance of all the players around him.
Clevedon took and early lead with a penalty by Mike Lowis and applied all the pressure, but were unable to turn their territorial advantage into points. A wrong option or a poor final pass squandered many an attacking position, or more evidently a rushed tapped penalty, where more control would have benefited the team. Clevedon again had a player sin binned, which did not help their cause. Although always taking the game to St Mary's, Clevedon too frequently lost possession or gave away far too many penalties. St. Mary's equalised with a penalty before the break.
The second half showed Clevedon full of confidence and especially the set scrum, where they showed complete dominance. Mike Lowis increased the lead with his second penalty. This was quickly followed by the try of the game when a superb break by fly half Tom O'Rourke set up Owen Biggins for a fine try. The simple conversion was missed. St Mary's hit back with a second penalty, but this did not upset Clevedon who now had set into a rhythm and a slick handling movement saw Tom Thie score a try in the corner.
Clevedon were now buzzing and a quickly taken tapped penalty by Lowis saw Vailes chip ahead and win the race for the touch down. Clevedon kept up the attack and St Mary's never got into a position to threaten the Clevedon line. Finally another slick handling movement saw Tom Thie score his second try, which Lowis converted to give Clevedon a welcome victory.
Clevedon have a free week next week and are away to Reading on the 13th March 2004, kick off 2:30pm.
