Clevedon’s season has come off the rails. Three consecutive defeats has not helped their cause and the unavailability of Brooks, Lowis, Shopland, Page and Potts has been their undoing. Clevedon started promisingly but Bridgwater took the lead through a penalty. Good forward work by John Pearce and Neil tucker forced a penalty, which saw Steve Johnson convert in his first game back after injury. Soon afterwards, in trying to stop Bridgwater’s first try he got injured again and had to be replaced. Both sides had a player yellow carded and soon the heavier more dominant home pack forced their way over for a converted try.
Clevedon again had trouble with the rolling maul and coach Brian Hanlon has a great deal of work to do to solve this weakness. Before the break missed tackles helped Bridgwater to score their third try to lead 20-3 at halt time.
Clevedon started the second half with a penalty by Ashley Vailes, but Bridgwater again used their strength to catch and drive at the lineout for a try. Clevedon players were getting frustrated and skipper Jeff Durant did a good job in trying to keep his young charges in check, although two more were yellow carded. Clevedon conceded too many penalties and their usually good back division looked very fragile. Bridgwater now completely on top in all phases scored two late tries to run out easy winners.
A great deal of hard work needs to be done at training next week for the home game with St Mary’s, kick off 2:30pm.
