This quarter final of the Somerset Cup was a credit to Somerset rugby. Weston-Super-Mare from a league above were always in the driving seat and their heavier pack was always dominant. Clevedon should have taken an early lead when Mike Lowis playing in the unusual position of fly half, made a break and got within 15 metres of the Weston-Super-Mare line. The final try scoring pass was intercepted by the full back who ran back to score under the posts against the run of play. This lead was increased by a penalty try, which was converted.
Clevedon's lineout again did not function and a lost ball resulted in a converted try for Weston to lead 0-19. From the back of a good scrum Ashley Vailes made a break for a fine individual try, which Lowis converted.
Before the break Weston-Super-Mare kicked a penalty to lead 22-7 . Weston-Super-Mare deserved their lead with the Weston pack being more streetwise than their lower league opposition.
Weston increased their lead with a penalty and pressure on the Clevedon scrum gradually gave way to another try. Clevedon defended heroically and were rewarded with an excellent try from a tapped penalty, with number eight Mike Panoho putting Tom Thie over for a try.
This was a game between two arch rivals, with the bigger , heavier more unimaginative team winning on the day.
Next Saturday, Clevedon play Chinnor in the league, KO 2:30pm.
