AC: The Clevedon defence move up

Clevedon came back from the dead to win this game in weather conditions that can only be described as gale force. Clevedon played with the wind at their backs in the first half and took a while to settle down. Mike Lowis gave them the lead with a penalty. To add to Clevedon's growing injury list, they lost John Potts who was replaced by Neil Tucker. Clevedon were denied possession by a determined Barnstaple side that were desperate for two league points to help stave off relegation. When in possession Clevedon probed right and left but the home defence held firm. On a rare excursion into Clevedon territory Barnstaple kicked a penalty. When the hald time whistle came many Clevedon supporters could not envisage a Clevedon victory.

AC: Scrum down

The second half saw Barnstaple on the attack from the first whistle. They in turn found the Clevedon defence solid and well organised. It was difficult to see where and how Clevedon were going to score and get anywhere near the Barnstaple line because of the wind. Barnstaple kicked three penalties to lead 12-3 and were well in the driving seat with twenty minutes to go. Clevedon were now rueing the missing of three first half penalties, which were kickable. A few positional changes by coach Brian Hanlon saw a transformation in Clevedon's forwards. A superb display by Ashley Vailes and a blindside break well supported the back row saw winger Christian Bushell flash over in the corner. Against all the odds and the wind Mike Lowis converted from the touchline. Clevedon were now winning more possession and the forwards started to take the opposition on and on a couple of occasions Clevedon kicked the ball away in Barnstaples 22 when it should have been kept in hand. The crowning moment came when a touchline drive by the pack was well supported by the rest of the team, resulted in a try by Tom Thie, which Lowis converted. A really superb team try finished the game. In the last five minutes Clevedon kept a strangle hold on the game by hugging the touchline and denying Barnstaple any ball.

Next Sunday, Clevedon play Weston-Super-Mare in the quarter final of the Somerset Cup.
