AC: James Russell makes his 1st XV debut on the flank

AC:Simon Brittan alias Sherman keeps a close eye on things

This fourth round Somerset Cup match turned out to be a real tussle with Bristol Harlequins giving Clevedon a real fright.

Clevedon took the game to the home side from the first whistle and after a slick handling movement, Justin Herewini scored a try in the corner. This was quickly followed by a Tom Thie try, which Mike Lowis converted.

After the early set back Harlequins got into the game through a fine performance from the pack who dominated the lineout, rucks and mauls. From a good lineout they scored a try, which was converted. They then scored a converted try from a rolling maul to lead 14-12. This shook Clevedon and very poor lineout play did not help matters. At times it was farcical. Before the break Clevedon regained the lead with a well-worked Matthew Bragg corner try. Clevedon lead 14-17 at the break.

The second half started with Harlequins well to the fore and Clevedon defending well and unable to produce their league form. Harlequins drew level with a 30 yard drop goal and Clevedon had a game on their hands to prevent a humiliating loss.

The additional squad players of Matthew Bragg, Simon Brittan, James Russell, Rob Cates, Dave Rawle and Matthew Foster acquitted themselves well and stuck to the task of dragging Clevedon back from the brink.

Owen Biggins, who had an outstanding game, scored a try that Lowis converted to put Clevedon in front. The final result was still in doubt with Harlequins pressing hard for the line, only to be denied by the outstanding Clevedon defence. With just a few minutes remaining, veteran scrum half Neil O'Rourke kicked a penalty to clinch victory. A good, close typically hard cup match was only to be expected given that both sides had played the day before.

Clevedon now venture into the quarter finals and await the forthcoming draw.
