Clevedon playing with the wind at their backs attacked from the first whistle with the intention to complete the first double of the season, quite clear for the huge crowd to see. A fine drive by the forwards produced good ball for Tom O'Rourke to do a midfield switch with burley Tim Brooks who crashed over for a try. Mike Lowis converted. Clevedon applied all the pressure and Cheltenham found it hard to get out of their own half. Poor handling and ball retention prevented Clevedon from scoring more tries. Again good Clevedon close support play by the forwards saw Mike Panoho score a try. Clevedon then lost scrum half Ashley Vailes with a leg injury, which saw wing Tom Thie take over the number 9 shirt. Before the injury, a lapse in the Clevedon defence saw Cheltenham sneak over for a try. Before the break Mike Panoho scored his second try with a superb pick up and drive for the line. Lowis converted.
The lineout became a lottery in the wind but this did not stop Clevedon trying to run the ball at every opportunity. Mike Lowis again having a great game at full back, opened up from inside his own 22, linked with several players and ended with MOTM James "Good with Wood" Shopland scoring a try in the corner. Then came Clevedon's test of character with two players sent to the sin bin for technical offences. The remaining six forwards had a mighty task on their hands. Cheltenham did manage a converted try during this period but all credit must go to Jeff Durant and the remainder of his pack for a valiant effort. With ten minutes to go Clevedon returned to full strength and kept control of the game and wrapped it up with a penalty by Lowis to end a wonderful first half to the season in South West One.
The next league game is away to Truro on January 3rd 2004. The fourth round of the Somerset Cup is away to Bristol Harlequins on Sunday January 18th, the same weekend as the rearranged fixture against Keynsham, which is also away.
