Clevedon hoped to produce the sparkling display they showed in last season's Somerset Cup, but this was not to be because this was league rugby and a different ball game.
The early exchanges showed that this was going to be a hard physical encounter. Both sides were committed and Clevedon's early pressure was rewarded with number eight Mike Panoho driving over from a scrum for a try, which Mike Lowis converted. Both sides gave away too many penalties and the game became very much stop-start. Clevedon increased their lead with a brilliant solo efort by scrum half Ashley Vailes, who broke from the base of the scrum 30 metres out, beat two players and chipped over the fullback to win the race for the touch down under the posts. Lowis converted.
The aggressive Keynsham pack always asked questions of the Clevedon eight, but Clevedon were up to the task. Before the interval, Keynsham took a well rehearsed tap penalty move to score a converted try.
The second half showed Clevedon on top, but they could not cross the home sides line either through good defence or over elaboration in the backs. Midway through the half the referee from The Wirral was injured and the game was abandoned. The game will now have to be rearranged.
Next week Clevedon are at home to Gordano in the Somerset Cup, kickoff is at 14:00.
