This was the first time that these two sides have played each other and it turned out to be a spectacle of open rugby. Both teams were experiencing their first season in South West One. The pitch despite the heavy rain was in perfect condition, especially due to the work done by groundsman Alan Cates.
The early exchanges were even, but Clevedon took the lead through a set tap penalty move resulting in owen Biggins scoring a try. Despite this reverse Oxford still took the game to Clevedon and with the possession they had they should've crossed the Clevedon line. there was one thing that stood in their way and that was the awesome Clevedon defence. A good drive by Mike Panoho, well supported by the pack resulted in a rolling maul which saw Owen Biggins peel off to score his second try. Mike Lowis increased the lead with a penalty. Both sides in many ways cancelled each other out, but still gave a good show. A loose clearance by Oxford was picked up by Mike Lowis, who counter-attacked to put Biggins in for his hat trick for Clevedon to lead 18 - 0 at the break.
The second half followed the same pattern and Oxford still won enough possession to score but with the Clevedon back row and the Clevedon midfield defending with their lives, managed to keep them at bay. Oxford were rewarded with two penalties, but with try scoring opportunities going begging by both sides, Mike Lowis sealed Oxford's fate with two late penalties.
Clevedon deserved their win and remian in second place in the table. Again Tim Brooks was dominant in midfield and Ashley Vailes an inspiration at scrum half. The Clevedon pack stuck to their task and won their own set pieces and with young John Potts still well to the fore, a bright future lies ahead.
Next week Clevedon are away to Keynsham who are the last unplayed opponents in this league. The kickoff is at 14:30.
