On an historical day for rugby with England winning the World cup, the bouyant minions of Clevedon happily motored up the M5 to battle against the might of Cheltenham.
Clevedon did not have the best of starts, getting offside at the kick off and giving away a penalty, which was converted. Within minutes Clevedon were on level terms through the trusted boot of Mike Lowis with a penalty. The game played on a heavy pitch and in wet conditions saw both sides trying to play expansive rugby. The exchanges were even. Clevedon were reduced to 14 men with a player yellow carded. During this period Tim Brooks intercepted 40 metres out and outstripped Cheltenham's defence with a dash for the line. Lowis duly added the conversion. Cheltenham always looked dangerous with the ball in hand but Clevedon's defence held firm, with Tom O'Rourke leading his line from the front. Cheltenham hit back with yet another penalty. Right on half time, good ball by the forwards saw Tom O'Rourke make a break with Tim Brooks on his shoulder who scored his second try. Lowis converted.
The second half was a dour battle with Cheltenham having most of the possession. Clevedon's superbly organised defence and the driving of the forwards, made the difference between winning and losing this match. Clevedon more than held their own in the scrums, the lineout was a lottery, but Clevedon's never give up attitude won the day. The only score in the second half was a penalty by Cheltenham and when the final whistle blew the postponed party began in style.
A superb all round perfomance, well skippered by captain Jeff Durant, ensured Clevedon retained second place in the league.
Next week Clevedon are at home to Oxford Harlequins, kickoff 14:30.
