The Clevedon machine keeps on rolling. After their sensational win against Cinderford a trip to Clifton was going to be a real test.
Clevedon got off to a fabulous start with Clifton having a kick charged down, resulting in a corner try for Justin Herewini. Clifton seemed to have the early territorial advantage and opened their account with a well engineered try, which was converted to take the lead. Clevedon from the first scrum had the upper hand and provided a good platform for Clevedon's exciting backs. Clevedon took the lead 7 - 8 with a Mike Lowis penalty. Unfortunately, the game was held up for half an hour due to a serious injury to scrum half Steve Johnson. On the restart Ashley Vailes moved to scrum half and immediately scored a try under the posts with lowis converting. The injury to Johnson seemed to raise the game of Clevedon an good forward pressure saw Mike Panoho go over for Lowis to convert. On the half time whistle, a slick handling movement saw Tom Thie score in the corner. Clevedon lead 27 - 7 at the break.
The second half started with Clevedon rampant and taking Clifton to the cleaners in all departments. The support play of Clevedon and the skill levels were outstanding. Mike Lowis at full back gave a superb display and it was he after good work from the forwards that enabled him to score the first try of the second half. A good handling movement and good support saw outstanding flanker James Shopland score in the corner. There was no letting up and again momentous rugby resulted in Chris Cates scoring on his return to the team. An up and under by Vailes saw Lowis catch the ball to score, which he in turn converted.
The final Clevedon score came from Tom Thie. Clifton did not give up and came back late in the game to score two tries, one of which was converted. The performance of Clevedon has raised the eyebrows of many people in the rugby circles the the West. The front row of Potts, Gallagher and Tucker were always in the driving seat. John Pearce and Jeffrey Durant supreme in the tight and the lineout, plus the link play of backrows Shopland, Biggins and Panoho ensured Clevedon stayed on top in the forward battle. The backs on block worked well as a unit, with the mercurial Lowis coming into the line with some superb breaking runs.
