Clevedon started in a confident manner, but managed to fall behind to a Barnstaple penalty. Mike Lowis got Clevedon on the score board with a penalty to level the scores after eight minutes.. Good work at the base of the scrum by Fox resulted in Christian Bushell scoring a good try, which Lowis converted. Clevedon developed the bad habit of kicking the ball away in the opposition 22 when it would have been better keeping the ball in hand. A slick handling movement saw Ashley Vailes score a try, which Lowis converted. With Clevedon in the driving seat Lowis increased the lead with a penalty to lead 20 - 3 after 26 minutes.
Clevedon then went to sleep and gifted Barnstaple points with two penalties and a converted try to lead only 20 - 16 at the break.
One of the pleasures for Clevedon was the driving maul, which was exceptional, with Mike Panoho, Nick Hill and John Pearce well to the fore. Barnstaple punished Clevedon with another penalty to reduce the lead to one point. Clevedon surged forward to get within 5 metres of the Barnstaple line, where a Barnstaple lineout throw saw them passing along the backs behind the goal line for the outside centre to clear to touch 50 metres away. Quick thinking by Tom Thie with a quick throw in to Mike Lowis saw the fullback sprint to the line unopposed for his try, which Johnson converted. Barnstaple hit back with a penalty from the half way line. The young Clevedon backs had a good final twenty minutes and with good forward domination in the lineout through skipper Jeff Durant and the rolling maul, Johnson kicked his penalty.
From the restart, Clevedon drove into midfield and sucked in the defence and then spread the ball wide via Bushell to Tom O'Rourke who scored a good try in the corner. This sealed Clevedon's third victory in the league and they remain in fourth spot.
Clevedon have no game next Saturday, but the following week 24/11/3 entertain league leaders Cinderford at home.
