Clevedon started their first home league encounter with a few familar faces back in action to add experience to the young talents of the Clevedon 2nd XV.
In the early exchanges the home side looked to have the upper hand, although simple handling errors restricted their scoring opportunities. Continued pressure up front led to a penalty in the visitors 22, where skipper Kemp took the initiative with a quick tap and shimmy before passing to the old war-horse Ross Brace who powered his enormous frame over in the corner.
From the kick off the home side conceded a slack penalty, which reduced the deficit immediately. Clevedon maintained their dominance up front with the front row of Dunn, Kemp and Nally imposing considerable pressure on the visitor's scrum, the second score was soon to follow. Again it came from a forced penalty in the oppositions red zone. This time it was the tireless and indefatigable Rawle who took the ball on and cut the Chew defence in two before gliding over the try line to put the Clevedon boys 10-3 to the good at half time.
The home side started the second half as they did the first, with simple errors restricting possession. However, from a defensive lineout Ross Brace used all his experience to intercept a stray ball and start the move of the game. The ball passed through several pairs of hands and who else but Alan Dunn popped up at the right time to add the finishing touch. Taylor added the extras.
The mighty twos began to enjoy this merit table clash. The Flying Dutchman in the lineout was winning everything, James Russell was covering every blade of grass and the Clevedon backs began to express themselves. The evergreen Ade Freeman, floated a delightful pass to Rob Cates who turned on the gas and burnt past his opposite winger to score in the corner. Rawle stepped up to add the extras from the touchline.
The centre partnership of Bragg and Hill was again a focal point, although the next try was to come from the young Jo Taylor, who enjoyed an impressive debut at scrum half. He showed a clean pair of heels with a break down the blindside and grounded the ball under the posts to make an easy two points for Rawle.
Clevedon seconds are getting stronger every game with Kemp's careful blend of youth and experience having the desired effect. They can look forward to next week's fixture full of confidence sitting deservedly on top of the league with a 100% record.
Next Saturday, Clevedon II are away to St Bernadettes, kick off is at 15:00.
