Clevedon deservedly notched up their first league win of the season over old rivals Bridgwater, without the aid of John Pearce, Tim Brooks and Steve Johnson. Bridgwater had the better of the early play but failed to break down Clevedon's superbly organised defence. It was inevitable that with all the pressure they would score a try after Clevedon lost a man to the bin. This they did, which stirred Clevedon into action. Mike Lowis got Clevedon on the score board with a well struck penalty. This was quickly followed by a fine individual try by the mercurial Lowis, from sixty metres out. He duly converted his own try. This was a purple patch for Clevedon and a slick handling movement saw Vailes loop round to score wide out and Lowis again did the honours. Before half time came the try of the game, which involved many hands, with Mike Panoho giving the final pass to Tom Thie to score out wide. By now Bridgwater were glad to hear the half time whistle after the clock had reach 49 minutes.
This was a much improved Clevedon performance with the lineout working well and less turnovers. All that is required now is to improve the verbal discipline. The second half started with Bridgwater firing on all cylinders, but Clevedon's defence as ever held firm. Lowis increased the lead with two more penalties. Clevedon saw Owen Biggins well to the fore, Jeff Durant like a salmon in the lineout and John Potts developing with every game. Again Anthony Fox was a real live wire. Clevedon's backs looked a good fast unit, with Justin Herewini like a rock in midfield. Clevedon were not finished yet and a good movement saw Thie score his second try. Lowis kicked his fourth penalty. Clevedon used all their replacements of which Chris Cates looked dangerous and tackled well. Bridgwater scored their second try in the dying minutes of this 46 minute half.
Next Saturday, Clevedon are away to Chinnor, kick off is at 15:00. Coach leaves at 10:00, all supporters are welcome. Come and enjoy a nice day out in Thame.
