Nailsea & Backwell II 12 Clevedon III 12

After a 3 week break for international duty the mighty 3rds were back in business on Saturday. There were doubts before the game from some factions because the 2nds had a game, featuring Captain Steve ‘The Poacher’ Murray, and the Colts did too, so who was going to turn out for the 3rds?? How wrong we were to doubt Super John Evans’ abilities to get a team together with what ended up with a choice selection of young ‘uns and Leg-Ends dusting off those boots. These including Dave ‘Wiggsy’ Roberts and the influential Neil West captaining the side again.

The game began after the usual rigorous warm up routine. Nailsea & Backwell showed early on that they had some useful forwards, but Clevedon with the added experience and power of the Leg-Ends matched them. Will Stonier put in a great tackle after a kick early on, only to turn round to see the team in fits of laughter with the odd mention of ‘offside rule’ being uttered between the laughs oops!

After lots of pressure Clevedon were rewarded with a try from the quality Al Dunn. Unfortunately it wasn’t all one way traffic and it was pretty much nip and tuck throughout the game as Nailsea & Backwell went over as well. In the second half after a penalty which saw Westy make a charge toward the line the ball broke to Will Stonier who dived over to score. Once again Nailsea & Backwell scored to equalise though and it was all square going into the end of the game.

After the introduction of Paul Nicholls at half time tempers got a tad frayed in the second half, with John Ev’s tasting some ‘shoe pie’, but coming out with the best line of the game, Does it make you feel good to be stamping on a (age deleted) year old!? Class. The ref had a good game up until a strange moment when Marc Jenkins, who had a great game at full back, touched the ball down in the dead ball area only to be adjudged that it wasn’t? After much remonstrating a penalty was given to Nailsea but Clevedon’s defence once again held firm, with Dan Filby’s good kicking showing again. A mention also has to go to Dan Hand, who once again had a huge influence on the game and to Matt Bragg who put in some great tackles.

The game was so enthralling that the boys felt it natural to analyse it straight after in the clubhouse, Sven Goran Eriksson style. This in-depth discussion carried on until the early hours of the morning once again with Luke Filby almost continually repeating. I love playing scrum half, can I play there every week??.
