Three games in eight days sums up Clevedon's rubgy this season and deservedly remain on top of the table after this win to confirm at least a play off spot for promotion. The early exchanges saw Clevedon trying to continue the fine flowing rubgy played in the Somerset Cup semi final and they soon took the lead with a penalty from Mike Lowis. Stroud equalised with the same and started to apply pressure on the Clevedon defence and had territorial advantage. It was Clevedon against the run of play who took the lead after good approach work by Lowis saw Chris Cates's blistering pace winning the race for the touch down. Stroud came back with their second penalty. An unusual missed tackle in the backs allowed Stroud to score under the posts, which was converted and right on the stroke of half time they score a second converted try to deservedly lead 20 - 8 at the break. Clevedon were struggling in the lineouts and scrum against a pack that had won the Gloucester Cup against Old Patesians the previous week. The accumulated tiredness from recent games was a contributory factor. The introduction of James Gallagher for veteran Neil Tucker seemed to lift the Clevedon players and the first half tiredess was quickly forgotten. However, they failed to take their early chances, but ten minutes into the half a devastating burst by Tim Brooks from forty yards out saw him score under the posts. Lowis converted. Clevedon now had their tails up, the lineout was going well and the stalwart Neil O'Rourke in for the injured Steve Johnson, started to use his experience to gain ground. Clevedon were now playing fast flowing rugby and a superb try by James Shopland levelled the scores. Lowis converted to put Clevedon into the lead 22 - 20. Breathtaking rugby saw Tom Thie score a fine try, which Lowis converted to lead 29 - 20 with ten minutes remaining. Stroud took all of that time to work their way up field to score a converted try at the final whistle. A great fight back by Clevedon that characterises the team spirit and determination of this side well led by Cap'n Durant.
