Clevedon started this 5th round Powergen Intermediate Cup match in explosive style with a try after thirty seconds when a delicately chipped kick into the corner by Ashley Vailes saw Tom Thie flash over. Clevedon then kept the pressure on with Christian Bushell scoring in the opposite corner. Netwon Abbot looked shaken to their roots and before the end of the first quarter Owen Biggins scored under the posts with Steve Johnson converting. Newton Abbot started to get into the game with determined tackling but their attacking force was very limited due to the pace of game at which Clevedon played. The visitors did manage a penalty but before half time James Gallagher ferreted over for a try wide out. Clevedon led 27-3 at the break. The second half saw Clevedon dominate in all areas of the game, in fact they had too much possession. They increased their lead with Tom Thie's second try, which was a superb try involving quick handling. Clevedon tried to play champagne rugby in brown ale conditions, going over the line several times for disallowed tries. Eventually, after numerous missed opportunities Clevedon finished with tries by Tom Thie completing his hat trick and Chris Cates showing that there is no substitute for pace.
