Bristol Harlequins 5 Clevedon 26

  Back to 1st XV fixtures

Clevedon went into this NPI Cup with numerous changes due to the unavailability of key players and the most rewarding aspect was the performance of props Mike Sweet, the old warrior and Bradley Kemp, the young stud. Sweet's performance in the loose was exceptional.

Clevedon took an early lead through a penalty by Steve Johnson, which was wiped out by a try by the home side, this when Clevedon were down to thirteen men, due to the colourful yellow card. Clevedon moved the ball at every opportunity and good support play ended up with Owen Biggins scoring for Johnson to convert. Johnson, now developing into an accomplished player, kicked his second penalty and before the break Robert Cates, making his first team debut, scored a fine try in the corner.

The second half became a scrappy affair, with Clevedon playing most of the rugby. They were unlucky not to score on numerous occasions, with the final pass going astray. Excellent work by Tom O'Rourke saw him stopped on the line, but the supporting captain Jeff Durant was on hand to get the touch down. Tim Brooks kicked a magnificent conversion from the touch line. A good win in difficult circumstances.
