Exmouth 20 Clevedon 20

On a bright, hot and sunny day, Clevedon ventured to the seaside for a battle of two promotion sides. From the start it was obvious that both sides were intent on moving the ball around. The early exchanges were even, but it was the home side who took the lead with a converted try by ex-Clevedon player Paul Glen, which was a fine individual effort. Then Clevedon won good lineout ball, set up a good drive and when released, the backs moved the ball swiftly to winger Christian Bushell to score in the corner.

The second half showed Clevedon playing down a slight slope with the breeze at their backs. The Clevedon forwards were competing well against the Exmouth eight, well led by ex-Bristol number eight, Rob Armstrong. Clevedon took the lead through a touch of Mike Lowis magic. He chipped a tap penalty over the defence and beat the flat-footed defenders to the touch-down. This was quickly followed by a Tim Brooks charging try, which Steve Johnson converted. Clevedon now seemed to be in the driving seat. After missing a couple of chances by buying dummies like a mother with sextuplets, Exmouth hit back with two tries to level the score at 17-17. Lowis kicked Clevedon into the lead but Glen equalised at the death with a match saving penalty. A lot of effort in the hot sunshine was rewarded with a point and a pint.
