Clevedon, back in South West Division II started in fine style against promotion fans Brixham, who finished third last season. Brixham with the heavier pack started well and had Clevedon under the cosh and took the lead through a penalty. Clevedon soon equalised with a penalty through the boot of Mike Lowis. The fast sunny conditions began to take their toll on the heavier Brixham pack when Clevedon moved the ball at pace and good inter passing resulted in Tony Dauncey going over near the posts for Lowis to convert, giving Clevedon a 10-3 lead at the break. Clevedon, fielding Steve Johnson at scrum half and Ashley Vailes on the wing, the latter making his debut, were delighted and inspired by their performances. The second half saw Clevedon step up the pace and Tim Brooks increased the lead with a try after good work by the pack and pressure on the Brixham scrum, which Lowis converted. Then Lowis kicked his second penalty to increase the lead to 20-3. A break by Lowis resulted in Anthony Fox going over for a try, again converted by Lowis. Brixham hit back with a converted try but Clevedon and Lowis had the last word with atry. A very promising start.
