Clevedon experienced wet conditions for the first time this season and started the game playing expansive rugby, which really was not the order of the day. Clevedon therefore made unforced errors, which allowed Hornets into the game and they took the lead with two early penalties. Both sides made mistakes due to the conditions, but Clevedon looked solid in defence, with Tim Brooks and Tom O'Rourke well to the fore. Immediately before the break a blindside move from their own 22 metres saw Brooks streak down the touchline and off load to Lowis, who in turn put Tom O'Rourke away on a 40 metre sprint for the line to score a try. Clevedon trailed 6-5 at the break. The second half saw Clevedon playing with the breeze and the rain at their backs. The forwards started to ruck and maul well, with John Pearce leading the way. Hornets rarely strayed into Clevedon territory and it took a penalty by Mike Lowis to edge Clevedon into the lead. Clevedon's forwards now had the game by the scruff of the neck and Chris Cates was unlucky to have a try disallowed. Clevedon drove the ball into the corners and had their just reward when Anthony Fox went in under the posts for a great individual try. Steve Johnson added the conversion right on the final whistle. Next Saturday Clevedon are at home to Oldfield Old Boys in the Powergen Cup and on Sunday entertain Gordano in the Somerset Cup. KO's 14:30 |
