Clevedon needed to bounce back after their two defeats by Mary's and this top of the table clash was to be a test of character. Clevedon passed the test in fine style starting at a blistering pace playing expansive rugby. They took the lead through scrum half Steve Johnson who scored a try in the corner after a back row move. Clevedon kept up the pressure and a clearance kick out of defence by Exmouth was latched onto by full back Mike Lowis who counter attacked with a mesmurising run to score under the posts. Johnson converted. Exmouth were now shell shocked as Clevedon ran the ball at every sensible opportunity and a flowing move saw Chris Cates skate over in the corner after a hard determined run. Exmouth hit back with a penalty and while Clevedon were down to 14 men they also scored a well engineered converted try. Clevedon led 17 - 10 at the break. The second half was a more even affair with Clevedon's forwards battling well against the massive Exmouth pack. Clevedon's defence held firm to nullify numerous attacks. Clevedon should have increased their lead on many occasions but elected to kick the ball instead of keeping the ball in hand. Eventually Clevedon increased their lead with an opportunist try by scrum half Steve Johnson from a quick tapped penalty. Exmouth late in the game kicked a penalty. Again, good lineout work by Captain Jeff Durant caught the eye and the loose play of James Gallagher. Tim Brooks having become a Dad again marshalled his backs like a general.
