Clevedon started the defence of the Somerset Cup in fine style. During an even first half and in very wet conditions, Clevedon had Weston from two leagues higher, very much on the back foot. Clevedon’s scrummage was again very solid while, in the conditions, the line outs were much of a lottery. Clevedon’s backs always seemed to have the edge and in drier conditions it was felt that Clevedon would have had the upper hand. After two quite easy penalty misses, Clevedon took the lead with a penalty by Tom Thie.

The second half was much the same as the first, however, Weston equalised with a penalty but it was Thie who soon restored a three point lead for Clevedon. Weston again fought back with a dropped goal which went over off the post. Clevedon then produced a bit of magic to score the only try of the game with a fine break by Tom O’Rourke to put Mike Lowis in for an excellent score. The conversion in front of the posts was missed, and proved to be vital with Weston pulling back to win with two late penalties.
