Thornbury 10 Clevedon 45
20th October 2001
| Back to 1st XV fixtures This highly awaited game started at a cracking pace with both sides intent on moving the ball. Thornbury took the early lead with a pick-up and drive around the blind side for a converted try. Clevedon hit back straight away when a planned tap penalty move saw Tom Thie make the break for Chris Cates to score which was converted by Mike Lowis. Clevedon were again proving too dominant for the opposition in the set scrums, which gave the backs a good platform to work from. A slick handling movement saw Clevedon take the lead with another Cates try, again converted by Lowis. Clevedon now were on fire, and good hands and running saw Jeff Durant score under the posts for Lowis to convert. Thornbury kicked a penalty on the half time whistle. The second half became hectic at times, and temper flared which was not helped by inconsistent refereeing. Lowis kicked a penalty and for a while the game became very scrappy. A back row move from the scrum saw Nick Hill score a try, and again Lowis doing the honours. Clevedon now had a purple patch and good lineout work by Durant and a break in midfield by Tim Brooks saw James Shopland go over for a try converted by Lowis. Finally a good run and kick ahead by Cates resulted in Tom Thie scoring with Lowis converting. Clevedon played well but more verbal control is required. There are no match day photos this week. Next week Clevedon are at home to Whitehall, KO 3 o'clock. |
