CLIFTON WANDERERS 5 CLEVEDON 21
15th September 2001
Back to 1st XV fixtures Back row boys set up winClevedon made a bright start with strong driving from the back row of Fox, Biggins and Groves featuring. The resultant quickly recycled ball enabled the strong running backs to pose plenty of problems for the overworked home defence. A period of sustained pressure climaxed with Matt Groves popping up out wide to cross. Working from a stable platform, Neil O'Rourke was constantly able to release the backs and Tim Brooks and Tom O'Rourke were able to consistently cross the gain line and it wasnt long before Christian Bushell crossed for try number two, the accurate Lowis once again landing the conversion. A clear lack of discipline in tackling enabled the home side to remain in contention and this is an area which will no doubt soon be addressed by coach Brian Hanlon. Clevedon's front five were even more to the fore after the break and strong driving play from Dauncey, Tucker and Thompson supported the ever improving Groves. The final try came from a short scrum after Tim Brooks had appeared harshy denied a score by an unsited match official. A quick heel and Neil O'Rourke dived in beneath the post to leave Mike Lowis with the easiest of kicks and though Clifton ran in atry of their own just before the end, Clevedon remained full value for the comfortable victory, surely a confidence boost for Saturday's tough looking home league encounter with Gordon League. |
